A study was commissioned to establish the facts behind the fatal incidents and the behavioural factors that increase the risk of an incident occurring. Objectives For some time the DTI has been concerned about the number of drowning incidents that take place within the domestic environment, particularly as initial indications point to the fact that a large number of young children are involved. Drowning is the third largest cause of accidental death in the home in under fives. The DTI has commissioned the Business Strategy Group to carry out a full investigation of child drowning incidents in the garden. The brief was to provide a comprehensive picture of the type of incident, the profile of those affected and the precise behavioural factors that increase the risk of a fatal incident. -

Khisametdinova3 Keywords: terrestrial isopods, fauna, Abstract dry steppe, desert steppe, Kostanay This paper presents first materials on the fauna and distribution of the terrestrial Oblast, Northern and Southern isopods - woodlice (Oniscidea) inhabiting the central and southern parts of Turgai. Kostanay Region (Kazakhstan, Northern and Southern Turgai), located in the steppe zone. Most of the specimens of woodlice were collected in the territory of Ključne besede: kopenski the National Nature Reserve “Altyn Dala”, a new protected area (established in enakonožci, favna, suha stepa, 2012) and in the area of the Naurzum National Nature Reserve (established in puščavska stepa, Oblast Kostanaj, 1931, World Heritage Site of UNESCO), on the Stipa lessingiana dry steppe. The severni in južni Turgaj. list of woodlice includes six species (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscidea), belonging to five genera and three families in the study area. Four species are recorded for the first time in Kazakhstan – Desertoniscus subterraneus Verhoeff, 1930, Parcylisticus dentifrons (Budde-Lund 1885), Porcellio scaber Latreille, 1804, and Protracheoniscus major (Dollfus 1903). Distribution characteristics are provided for all of those species recorded in the study area. For the territory of Kazakhstan, according to a literature data, currently 16 species of terrestrial isopods have been recorded. Ponds for Stabilising Organic Matter
WQPN 39, FEBRUARY 2009 Ponds for stabilising organic matter Purpose Waste stabilisation ponds are widely used in rural areas of Western Australia. They rely on natural micro-organisms and algae to assist in the breakdown and settlement of degradable organic matter, generally before discharge of treated effluent to land. The ponds mimic processes that occur in nature for degrading complex animal and plant wastes into simple chemicals that are suitable for reuse in the environment. The operating processes in waste stabilisation ponds are shown at Appendix A. The use of ponds fosters the destruction of disease-causing organisms and lessens the risk of fouling of natural waters. They also limit organic waste breakdown in waterways which strips oxygen out of the water, often resulting in fish and other aquatic fauna deaths. These ponds need to be adequately designed to: • maximise the stabilisation of wastewater and settling of solids • avoid the generation of foul odours • maximise the destruction of pathogenic micro-organisms • prevent the discharge of partly treated wastes into the environment. This note provides advice on the design, construction and operation of waste stabilisation pond systems for use in Western Australia. It is intended to assist decision-makers in setting criteria for effective retention of liquids in the ponds and design measures to ensure their effective environmental performance. The Department of Water is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s water resources. It is also a lead agency for water conservation and reuse. This note offers: • our current views on waste stabilisation pond systems • guidance on acceptable practices used to protect the quality of Western Australian water resources • a basis for the development of a multi-agency code or guideline designed to balance the views of industry, government and the community, while sustaining a healthy environment. -

The primary reasons for this included providing irrigation for crops and drinking water for people and livestock. Later on, man began to harness the energy of flowing water for his mills. By the middle of the twentieth century many dams were constructed for electrical production all over the world and many large reservoirs covering many square miles were holding water for large municipalities. For the most part, little or no study had been done to consider the impacts of these structures on the environment. -

HOVERFLY NUMBER 41 NEWSLETTER SPRING 2006 Dipterists Forum ISSN 1358-5029 As a new season begins, no doubt we are all hoping for a more productive recording year than we have had in the last three or so. Despite the frustration of recent seasons it is clear that national and international study of hoverflies is in good health, as witnessed by the success of the Leiden symposium and the Recording Scheme’s report (though the conundrum of the decline in UK records of difficult species is mystifying). New readers may wonder why the list of literature references from page 15 onwards covers publications for the year 2000 only. The reason for this is that for several issues nobody was available to compile these lists. Roger Morris kindly agreed to take on this task and to catch up for the missing years. Each newsletter for the present will include a list covering one complete year of the backlog, and since there are two newsletters per year the backlog will gradually be eliminated. Once again I thank all contributors and I welcome articles for future newsletters; these may be sent as email attachments, typed hard copy, manuscript or even dictated by phone, if you wish.
