The rising cost of tramway construction has caused David Gibson to question how these costs can be justified. Here he looks at the alternatives available that could provide real money-saving potential.

ramway schemes have escalated in cost in Britain, LRT schemes sometimes get grandiose structures that seem and are becoming unaffordable for most cities… to be an architect’s fancy; I cite as an example the bridge at while successive Governments are reluctant to fund Central Park in Manchester, which has a very low speed limit but them. At the end of the day, rails have to be embedded in the road structure and take the load of both trams and road vehicles. On the newest extension, tram, trolleybus and bus converge immediately outside the suburban station Wankdorf Bahnhof. As the city’s biggest single tramway opening ever, the Bern West expansion in December 2010 was described as the Berner Zeitung, ‘a second golden age for the tram in Bern.’ Costing CHF152.8m (EUR125m) for the tramway and related improvements, the 6.8km (4.3 miles) of new route, 2km (1.2 miles) in dedicated space, was installed between April 2008 and September 2010. Partly driven by bus capacity limitations, Bern West created a common route for cross-city lines 7 and 8 west of existing track at Kaufmännischer Verband to a junction at Bümpliz Unterführung. The two branches beyond serve a mixture of established and new developments, with line 7’s coverage mainly being older parts of this commuter area. This large retail and entertainment centre is being heavily promoted for public transport use, with the tram loop immediately outside the Kursaal stop on a section that would see more trams if bus line 10 becomes a tramway.

Centrally it would use existing tracks between Viktoriaplatz and Eigerplatz, although the already intense traffic between Zytglogge and Bern Bahnhof raises the prospect of a second core route. 3. 2710 begins its long journey to Seashore behind an American-flagged lorry. Built in 1927 by Waggonfabrik Falkenried, it is an example of a modernised post World War One tram. It arrived at the museum in 1965. James Schantz collection

4. Seashore’s 105 (built in 1903) is represented by stablemate 2 car 108 and is one of two cable trams in the collection, the other being San Francisco’s cable car 48. The original 105 (1885) was destroyed in a fire. James Schantz collection

5. 279 is a unique item. With four wheels the passenger ride is bouncy, even though the tram was heavily constructed to pull trailers. The air compressor is axle driven, so until sufficient pressure is built up in the plenum, a hand brake is used. Seashore Collection 3 4 6.
