The three Parishes of our benefice, part of the Deanery of Bedford, all have their own distinct character. Each church acknowledges its individual needs and seeks to work together to further the links and good relations between the churches. We are seeking to appoint a Priest in Charge to oversee the three parishes in the Benefice but to have specific responsibility for the Abbey Church of St Mary and St Helena, Elstow. Within the Team Ministry is one stipendiary Team Vicar with specific responsibility for St Mary’s Church, Cardington. We also are privileged to have the services of three retired clergy who support St Michael’s and All Angels, Bedford. There are two Readers within the Benefice. The Elstow PCC and the wider Team Ministry are really excited at the opportunities that this new appointment brings. During the Interregnum we have begun to formulate a new strategic vision for the Church and ministry within the community. There is a real sense of God moving in this place and signs of the start of further growth giving us a tantalizing glimpse of where God is guiding us. Our current expression of this is encapsulated in our Mission Action Plan which is shown on the next two pages. Come and join us to help shape and sharpen our vision and lead us through the challenges ahead to enable us to fulfil God’s plan. 4 The Elstow Team Ministry Profile December 2015 Mission Action Plan SUMMARY Our Details Name of Parish St Mary and St Helena, Elstow Deanery Bedford MAP Contact Person Tracey Hinson (church warden) [email protected] Name and email Dates the key date is the one on which the MAP is adopted by the PCC If appropriate, the date that the previous MAP was adopted by the PCC July 2014 This MAP MAP adopted by PCC Dec 2015 MAP presented to APCM April 2016 MAP Summary sent to Bishop Jan 2016 MAP Review planned for June 2016 Our Looking Three things we have seen about our parish and our world 1. A church that is led by the Holy Spirit to meet the needs of the local community A place that allows everyone the opportunity to share and develop their abilities, talents and resources. Based on a sustainable foundation of people and finance Our Priorities are Our three key priorities for the next five years. 1. To make stronger links with our community and parish 2. To further develop provision for Young people and families 3. To develop a sustainable foundation of good stewardship to fully pay our Parish share by 2019 Our Goals are Our five key SMART goals for the next year or more. 1. Extend community outreach through the “Holiday at Home” format by providing Christmas lunch and a summer event for senior citizens and single people of the parish 2. Further develop fresh expressions of church to follow-up our holiday club by continuing the programme of Messy church, which ties in to major festivals and celebrations and by introducing elements of Messy church and interactive worship into our monthly lay-led family service 3. Audit the gifts, skills and talents of the members of our church family as part of our 2016 stewardship campaign to enable each person to better contribute and play their part in supporting each other. 4. Set up a committee within PCC and wider Church family to focus on financial stewardship and fundraising 5. Bedford Highlights Academy News and Views from Bedford Academy Autumn 2014 Year 7 HAVE ARRIVED! See page 7 Inside this issue: • Focus on Year 7 • Spotlight on Reading • Sky Sports Studio Trip Welcome A message from Bedford Academy Principal, Mrs Smith. The students have had another busy term taking part in a wide variety of events and activities which have enhanced their academic learning. September marked a major milestone in Bedford Academy’s history when we became a secondary school and welcomed Years 7 and 8 for the first time. As you will see from the numerous articles in this newsletter, they have settled in well and have enjoyed being involved in an array of diverse activities from zorbing and sailing, to researching the lives of local soldiers who served in WW1 and creating rainbows in test tubes during science! At the Academy we believe it is important that we offer students opportunities to widen their cultural experience and social skills. We also recognise the importance of ensuring our students are prepared for life after school and provide a high quality careers education and support service. You can read about the comprehensive extent of their work on pages 14-15. Reading, writing and numeracy skills lie at the heart of everything we do and are essential across all subjects at every level. At Bedford Academy we encourage reading at every opportunity and the “Spot Light on Reading” feature within this edition of the newsletter gives top tips in helping to develop an interest in reading. We all have our part to play in providing the very best education that we can for young people and I urge parents to encourage students to read at home.

Wilshamstead Parish Council Wixams Parish Council Bedford Borough Councillor Report: 1. Coronavirus in Bedford Borough Many COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted today but it is still important to exercise caution. The Borough Council is asking people to: • Get tested regularly • Self-isolate if told to by NHS Test & Trace • If you can, wear a face covering in public places • Meet up with others outdoors rather than indoors More information about the lifting of restrictions can be found at the Government website: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/covid-19-coronavirus-restrictions-what-you-can-and-cannot- do 2. Vaccine rollout The vaccine rollout continues. There are a number of drop in centres available around the Borough where residents not yet vaccinated can go. Details of locations and times can be found on the BLMK CCG website: https://www.blmkccg.nhs.uk/drop-in-covid-19-vaccination-sessions-available-for-people- aged-40-and-over/ 3. East West Rail – Wixams Station A rather bad tempered meeting of the Borough Council took place on 2nd June, in advance of the end of the East West Rail consultation. My own concern has always been its impact on Wixams Station. At the initial consultation on EWR, there were five route options to consider, two of which went through Bedford Town Centre and three that took a southern route, broadly along the line of the A421. At the time, the Mayor asked me to support a route through the centre of town, stating that a southern route might prejudice Wixams Station, either delaying it further, or turning it into a ‘crossover’ station, with EWR, and potentially outside of WIxams.
