FROM JAPONISME TO ART NOUVEAU Matthew Martin Japanese art is important as a teacher. From it, we once again learn to feel clearly how far we have strayed from nature's true designs through the persistent imitation of fixed models; we learn how necessary it is to draw from the source; how the human spirit is able to absorb a wealth of magnificent, naive beauty from the organic forms of nature in place of pedantic, decrepit rigidity of form. Julius Lessing, Report from the Paris Exposition Universelle, 1878 In the nineteenth century, an age where art from many different cultures was available for consumption, no other art had such a deep, transformational and permanent impact on the West as that of Japan. A five decade-long fascination began in exoticism, with widespread, literal copying of Japanese motifs and techniques, and ended in the absorption of Japanese aesthetic principles to the point that we no longer see anything overtly Japanese in European art and design of the turn of the twentieth century—the brief, brilliant moment of Art Nouveau, now widely recognised as the beginning of modern design. As the term `Japonisme' suggests, Japanese art had an enormous impact on the arts in France from the 1860s onwards.' The second half of the nineteenth century was a period of soul searching for intellectuals and artists across Europe. Many believed that the rise of industrial production in the nineteenth century had destroyed taste. Concomitant with this was the belief that quality of taste reflected the health — or lack thereof— of a society. -

THE ARTS OF EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY DINING ROOMS: ARTS AND CRAFTS, ART NOUVEAU, AND ART DECO by SUE-ANNA ELIZA DOWDY (Under the Direction of John C. Waters) ABSTRACT Within the preservation community, little is done to preserve the interiors of historic buildings. While many individuals are concerned with preserving our historic resources, they fail to look beyond the obvious—the exteriors of buildings. If efforts are not made to preserve interiors as well as exteriors, then many important resources will be lost. This thesis serves as a catalog of how to recreate and preserve an historic dining room of the early twentieth century in the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles. Basic Guide to Bottle Age Identification Say you’re planting a new tree in your backyard, and you dig a hole deeper than you’ve had to dig before. In the hole you find a glass bottle that you didn’t put there. How can you identify the bottle? How can you tell if it is old or just a piece of modern recycling that the previous owner left behind? Below please find a basic guide to help you identify a bottle’s age. Bottle identification is a rabbit hole that I’ve found fun to fall into; one bottle can take hours to research, and sometimes, you can’t find anything on it at all! In addition, manufacturing technological advances were adopted over time, not all at once, so older techniques were used at the same time as newer ones. This makes determining exact age for a bottle that wasn’t machine-made a little tricky. But, by looking at a few basic characteristics, you can learn if you want to toss your find in the recycling bin or place it at the center of your mantle. If you are interested in discovering more, I’ve listed some helpful web sites at the end. If you just want a basic guide, hope this helps! How was the bottle made? The first thing that I do when I handle a bottle is look at the construction – the sides, the top or lip, and the base. Baltic Glass The development of new creative models based on historical and contemporary contextualization Anna Vesele A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Sunderland for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, University of Sunderland April 2010 1 Abstract The aim of this research was to demonstrate the creative potential of a particular type of coloured flat glass. This glass is produced in Russia and is known as Russian glass. The present researcher has refined methods used by Baltic glass artists to create three- dimensional artworks. The examination of the development of glass techniques in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania was necessary in order to identify these methods and to contextualize the researcher’s personal practice. This study describes for the first time the development of glass art techniques in the Baltic States from the 1950s to the present day. A multi-method approach was used to address research issues from the perspective of the glass practitioner. The methods consisted of the development of sketches, models and glass artworks using existing and unique assembling methods. The artworks underlined the creative potential of flat material and gave rise to a reduction in costs. In conjunction with these methods, the case studies focused on the identification of similarities among Baltic glass practices and similarities of approach to using various glass techniques. -

Hayward BA, BSc University of Auckland 2012 Committee: Dr. Barbara Burrell (Chair) Dr. Kathleen Lynch 1 Abstract This thesis is a review of recent archaeometric studies on glass of the Roman Empire, intended for an audience of classical archaeologists. It discusses the physical and chemical properties of glass, and the way these define both its use in ancient times and the analytical options available to us today. It also discusses Roman glass as a class of artifacts, the product of technological developments in glassmaking with their ultimate roots in the Bronze Age, and of the particular socioeconomic conditions created by Roman political dominance in the classical Mediterranean. The principal aim of this thesis is to contextualize archaeometric analyses of Roman glass in a way that will make plain, to an archaeologically trained audience that does not necessarily have a history of close involvement with archaeometric work, the importance of recent results for our understanding of the Roman world, and the potential of future studies to add to this. 2 3 Acknowledgements This thesis, like any, has been something of an ordeal.
