OCTOBER 2017 AN ELEPHANT’S STORY n a starry night in the wilderness of Botswana, in her 661st day of pregnancy, an elephant named Kiti gave birth to a baby girl. The staff of Abu Camp, a halfway house O for orphaned and former zoo and circus elephants, named the calf Naledi, the word for “star” in their local language. Caretakers, including elephant manager Wellington (“Wellie”) Jana and wildlife biologist and Botswana native Dr. Mike Chase, were pleased by Naledi’s acceptance into the herd and the care she was receiving from her mother. But six weeks after giving birth, Kiti died and Naledi was left an orphan. How the dedicated caretakers rallied to adopt the baby elephant, save her life, and reintroduce her to the herd that had forgot ten her is the story told in Naledi: One Little Elephant, A Nature Special Presentation. Although elephant families are close, it is extremely precarious for a newborn to survive once it’s lost its mother. When the herd’s matriarch can’t produce enough milk to nurse Naledi and doesn’t know how to care for her, Chase, Wellie, and others separate Naledi from the herd and relocate her to another part of the camp, working round the clock to establish a bond and entice her to take milk. The filmmakers also document the cautious reintroduction of Naledi to the rest of the family, as well as surgery to repair her digestive track, which has become blocked due to palm leaves she has eaten. “The challenges elephants face across Africa are so complex: loss of habitat, increas ing human-elephant conflict, retaliatory killings exacerbated by the demand for ivory,” he says. “We’re losing elephants every ©VULCAN PRODUCTIONS PREMIERES THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5 AT 9PM 15 minutes, 96 elephants a day.
