There are short sections on quiet roads where care should be taken, and the route can be boggy in places. There are toilets, a village shop, café and pubs in Dent. Other options: For a more challenging experience, follow this route in the opposite direction, beginning with the very steep climb up to Aye Gill Pike. 1. (GPS: SD 704 870) Turn left out of the car park and walk through the cobbled village centre. Leave the village on this road and pick up the riverside path for the Dales Way on your left, just before the river Dee. Follow this path until you reach the tarmac road. 2. (GPS: SD 700 873) Turn right along the road and pick up the Dales Way again on your right, continuing along the river to the road at Barth Bridge. 3. (GPS: SD 694 878) At the road turn right. Walk along here for a short distance (approx 150m) and turn up the small tarmac lane on your right. Continue along this quiet lane for approximately 1km, until reaching Lunds Farm. 4. (GPS: SD 694 887) At the entrance to Lunds Farm turn left and continue through the cobbled yard.

    A Dales Fells Horseshoe a long distance walk through the Yorkshire Dales National Park by John Tew INTRODUCTION A DALES FELLS HORSESHOE The Dales Fells Horseshoe is a long distance walk covering 345 miles throughout the Yorkshire Dales National Park, including areas formerly in Westmorland, now part of Cumbria. You will visit the summit of all the 38 Yorkshire Dales fells over 600 metres and see the finest valley and river scenery. Every step of the way is worthwhile and there is very little road walking. You will have enough time to appreciate the many features of interest en route. The average day is just over 14 miles with 700 metres of climbing. The full circular walk takes 24 days. Alternatively the walk may be divided into The Three Circular Routes using a couple of short links, each circular route taking 8 or 9 days. The Northern (100 miles), Eastern (123 miles) and Western (134 miles) Circular Routes are described in the final chapter, and require two short links.     Northern 2020 Guidance notes on tasks. These notes are provided as a supplementary to provide some insight into the tasks and why they are designed as they are. They cover the main 14 tasks and the four subsidiary Hike and Fly tasks for which extra safety rules are included. There are also a few notes on route setting. Tasks (now confirmed for 2019) can be viewed and downloaded from www.xcmap.net Main tasks - general factors a) Level of Difficulty – the biggest single factor is the conditions under which the task is attempted. This could render a task from easy to impossible. However, given it is flyable then some of the task is always possible – this is especially the case with the five GRID challenges. Whether the full task can be completed is another matter. b) The tasks are roughly of equal level in terms of size to difficulty ratio. Based on experience, location and terrain for example a shorter FAI may be equal in difficulty to a larger length task. The scoring takes account of task size and difficulty level. c) Roughly speaking tasks are designed to become increasingly difficult as you progress through them. This is very much the case with the GRID’s, but it also applies to other tasks where turnpoints are further away or more awkwardly placed. One idea has been the use of expanding FAI triangles; progressing to the outer (larger) triangle when it becomes more challenging. This equally applies to Cat’s Cradle tasks where the cylinders get pushed further away. d) For safety reasons an end of speed section is used.
