Letter from the PTA Prez

Happy New Year Tigers!

The year of 2010 was filled with many fun activities. Thanks to the energetic dads in Dad’s Club we enjoyed a movie night, pancake breakfast and the bike rodeo. Many students participated in the Reflections Program and several will move on to the next level of judging.

We also would like to report on the tremendous success of the cookie dough fundraiser. We had record- breaking sales which will allow PTA to donate funds towards the school’s wish list. In December, the students who sold over 15 boxes were rewarded with a limo ride and picnic lunch in the park.

Thank you to all of the board members and other parents and grandparents who dedicate countless hours to help make Timberwood Park Elementary the wonderful school that it is. We look forward to many exciting activities in the New Year. Tiger Mart will be back in February and order forms for anytime orders are available on our website. We are gearing up for a super-fun spring carnival this April—watch for details!

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions please email us: [email protected]. Stay informed on PTA and school happenings by logging on to our website: www.timberwoodparkpta.com. You can follow us on Facebook and Twitter, too!

6 Nurse’s Notes

Hello Tiger Friends and Family!

There are some key health practices that I would like to stress in order to help ensure all of our stu- dents, staff and families remain sick-free. These are school-wide policies set in place in order to provide a safe and healthy environment for your child; please adhere to these policies, as you have indicated acknowledgement of them by signing your CISD School Handbook.

*No medications (either over-the-counter or prescribed) are allowed in his/her possession on school grounds. This includes cough drops, chewable Tylenol, and inhalers. *All medications must be brought into the school by an adult and in its original container or Rx bottle. *I am more than happy to administer any medications for your child; please see me for the proper medication permission request forms available. They are also available for you online at [email protected]. *Do not send your child to school if he/she has had a temperature of 100.4 or more within 24 hours and you have had to medicate them with a fever-reducer to bring their temperature down.

This is a CISD Policy endorsed by our Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marc Walker. “It is important that your child is fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications before returning to school because he/she can continue to be contagious up to 24 hours after a fever resolves. It is important you follow this rule to help prevent the spread of the flu/illness to other students and staff. Along with being fever-free, your child should also be ready to learn and feel well enough to participate in class.”

Winter is here!!! Please send your child to school in warm winter clothing that allows them to play during recess without being exposed to the elements. Chap Stick in their coat pockets will help with the chapped lips, too.

Parents of younger tiger cubs... having an extra set of under clothes and pants zip locked in their backpack continues to be a tremendous help for me and your child during school hours.

Finally, ask your child what we’ve been learning in school with our health care bear Fuzzy Wuzzy. He’s a great pal who helps Nurse Marisa promote healthy habits for well-being and success!

Your TPES school nurse, Marisa Gonzalez, RN

7 TIMBERWOOD PARK joins the in the Fight Against Heart Disease and Stroke!

Between January 18TH and February 9th, Timberwood Park students and thousands of students across the country will JUMP ROPE FOR HEART and have an opportunity to be a HEART HERO! Each child will learn that there are many ways to be a Heart Hero: making decisions to protect their healthy hearts from disease; helping people who don’t have healthy hearts by raising money for the American Heart Associa- tion; and helping our school get new PE Equipment so that we can keep on making fitness fun!

This year the San Antonio Spurs and the Rampage are BIG Supporters of the American Heart Association and they have two great opportunities for your student::

-Donate $50 and get a FREE Ticket to the Jump Rope for Heart Spurs Game on Friday, March 11th against the Sacra- mento Kings! After the game your student can take a Free-Throw Shot on the Court! Parents and siblings can pur- chase additional tickets starting at just $20! -Donate $25 and get a FREE Ticket to the Jump Rope for Heart Rampage game (choose March 20 or April 10) and Ice Skate on the rink before the game! Parents and siblings can purchase additional tickets for just $10!

Timberwood Park is proud to be an American Heart Association School Partner. Together we strive to teach all our students the importance of life-long fitness, healthy habits and to help others whenever they can. Our hope is that your student will carry this message through our community by telling friends and family members what they are learning in PE Class about their hearts and, if you choose to participate in the fundraiser, asking them to support their participation in Jump Rope for Heart. Our school’s goal is to raise $4,000.

Important Dates: ∗ Donation Envelopes are due on: FEBRUARY 9, 2011 ∗ National Wear Red Day kicking off Heart Awareness Month: Friday, Feb. 4th ∗ Spurs Game: Friday, March 11 ∗ Rampage Games: Sunday, March 20 or Sunday, April 10

Thank you for supporting your child, your school and the American Heart Association! To learn your personal risk for Heart Disease and Stroke and how to make small lifestyle changes that yield big results, take the free assessment at: mylifecheck.heart.org.

8 A Carnival is Coming!

Planning has begun! And a date has been set! Mark your cal- endars for April 9th, 2011 and plan on being part of all the FUN!

This year's PTA Event Fundraiser will be a Spring Carnival -- games, bake walk, entertain- ment, parades, music, and much, much more! The carnival theme will be FIESTA! and all events will be held at the school. Check our website often for updates and all the details! We would love to have you VOLUNTEER to work with one of our planning Committees. Ideas and suggestions are welcome - this will be a HUGE event so we are looking for plenty of parents to help make everything go smoothly. If you are interested in helping plan the Carnival, please contact Joey Fleming at [email protected].

9 Box Tops Wanted!

Are you throwing money away?

Collecting Box Tops has paid off big for Timberwood Park Elementary!! We have already received a check for over $1400 from those little Box Tops your little ones have been collecting. Congratulations.

In addition to our poster recognition, each month our Top Tiger receives a free kid’s meal at Chick Fil-A on Blanco Road. Starting in January, our top class per grade level will get extra recess. Our top class overall will get a special day (pajama day, read-in day, game day, etc) of their choice each month. Our top teacher reward each month will be a volunteer to cover recess duty for the teacher so he/she can have recess/lunch back-to-back. Every teacher deserves a treat like that.

Clipping Box Tops has its benefits. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents. Don’t throw away money! Collect your Box Tops and turn them in to your teacher with your child’s name and he or she could be our next Top Tiger.

Lastly, HEB periodically offers a Box Top bundle deal. Most recently, when you bought any 10 participating Box Tops products, you received a 50 Bonus Box Top (usually processed at the register). Imagine this...if each TPES family participated, the school could earn over $2,500! It’s an easy way to help out our school!
