For example, one can buy products produced by firms which routinely clear-cut forests, employ child or forced labor, defy domestic health-and-safety laws, intimidate labor organizers, and so on. On the other hand, many of the global poor rely on the employment opportunities that global production networks create, and developing countries tend to see their low production costs as their comparative advantage to attract foreign investment and upgrade to higher stages of development. In this dissertation, I explore different aspects of the moral, political and social philosophy surrounding grave flaws, particularly what they entail for consumers in affluent countries. Chapters 2-4 concern the appropriate role of consumers and those who would mobilize them to remedy grave flaws. In Chapter 2, I survey the kinds of moral relationship that consumers might have to the grave flaws. I then ask under what conditions an individual consumer has strong moral reasons to react to grave flaws by practicing selective purchasing. I conclude that the deep epistemic difficulties surrounding recognising each good’s connection with a grave flaw, and the effects of switching to apparently better products, mean consumers do not typically have strong moral reasons to practice conscientious consumption. Chapters 3 and 4 turn to consider what I call political consumerism, practiced by consumers as an iv aggregate group, mobilized by those who aim to remedy some of the grave flaws. In Chapter 3 I raise concerns about the necessity, effectiveness, and risks of political consumerism, and argue that it might be an effective and appropriate means to remedy grave flaws in global supply chains only in rather specific circumstances. Furthermore, in Chapter 3, I argue that because political consumerism threatens several liberal- democratic values, the mobilizers of political consumerism should attempt to apply more deliberative and democratic elements to their campaigns. Finally, in Chapter 5, I turn to the question of which flaws in supply chains are actually grave.     1 Business Ethics Wayne Norman “Business ethics” is a concise, but in many ways misleading, label for an interdis- ciplinary field covering a vast range of normative issues in the world of commerce. The label lends itself most directly to a core set of questions about how individuals in the business world ought to behave, or what principles they might appeal to in order to negotiate moral dilemmas at work. But if we consider the array of topics covered in the leading business ethics journals or textbooks, we see that these core issues about individual virtues and ethical decision-making are surrounded by layers of issues involving organizations and institutions. In other words, business ethics in the broadest sense also inquires about the most appropriate or just designs for firms, markets, market regulations, and political oversight in a democratic society and a globalized economy. Since this Encyclopedia contains dozens of essays on topics in business ethics (see from !""#$%&'%( )&*'"+ and !,-).&'+'%(, )&*'"+ #/, to 0*'+&1)21#0'%(, 0*'&)-"#11!. ".'3), and the 0#.1, &.!,) #.(!%'4!&'#%) we will focus here more on questions about the nature of the field, and less on debates about how to justify particular practices or rules within the world of business. An Institutional History of the Field, and an Intellectual Agenda Within some of the earliest writings in the history of Western and non-Western traditions of thought we find philosophers evaluating practices, virtues, and vices in commerce and money-lending (see $+$.6). These classical thinkers were also worried, as we are today, about the potentially corrupting influence of wealth in communal and political life.

Yet to date, surprisingly little attention has focused on other COIs that arise in supervisor-student relations. We examine a spectrum of related situations, ranging from standard graduate supervision through to dual relationships sometimes found in research with commercial potential. We illustrate some of the less-obvious factors that can bias supervisory judgment, and situate financial COI along a spectrum of forces that are deserving of recognition. We conclude by providing two sets of recommendations: one for individual supervisors, and the other for institutions and policy-makers.
