Wells presented readers with a novella that would become the standard bearer for all subsequent narratives concerned with time travel. In her 2005 introduction to The Time Machine, literary scholar Marina Warner describes Wells’s story as indicative of “an era of unsurpassed scientific discovery [when] many Victorian scientists were developing the technologies that would create the modern world” (xx). While earlier novels such as Samuel Butler’s Erewhon (1872) and William Morris’s News from Nowhere (1890) played with the notion of travelling backwards or forwards in time, The Time Machine truly emphasised the relationship between such temporal journeys and a particular object or vessel that would make them possible. While Wells’s story focuses on a trip to a distant, dystopian future, the time travel genre in contemporary popular culture texts have, instead, focused on travelling back and experiencing, if not trying to “correct”, the past. This is the case whether looking at past or present episodes of Dr. Who or now-classic films like Back to the Future (1985) or Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). In these narratives, characters do not passively observe events, but become immersed in them and hope to change them via the supposed clarity of hindsight. Like H.G. Wells’s iconic time machine itself, material objects have the ability to travel through time and become markers of the past (Gosden and Marshall 169).

There are those who will tell you what it is and it isn’t as if they I are the only authority. There are others, however, that will say Steampunk is open to each person’s interpretation. I will share my own experiences coming into a movement that I once considered “cute” but wasn’t as “accurate” as historical, to becoming enthralled with it, and finding my own definition Steampunk style. Background I have been doing historical and science fiction costuming for 33 years. I began at 16 (you do the math) at the original Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Agoura, California. (Trust me, you don’t want to see my very first Photo courtesy attempt!) I started with Elizabethans, both middle-class www.SimoneAtcelli.com and courtly dress. Other periods include Saxon, Viking, English Medieval, Caviler, Restoration (and of course) Victorian and Edwardian; as well as science fiction costumes (Star Trek, Babylon Five, Star Wars, Doctor Who) and comic superheros. Under costumer guild rules, I can compete as a master level costumer. I have run masquerades at Gallifrey One and at Loscon.   • Man and Machine in the World of Steam: the Emergence of Steampunk As a Cultural Phenomeon
    SOLANGE KIEHLBAUCH Solange Kiehlbauch is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in English. She is particularly interested in medieval history, as well as the history of science and medicine. After graduation, she hopes to earn a Mas- ter’s degree in History and a Social Science teaching credential to become a high school history teacher. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys horseback riding, reading, and writing fiction and poetry. Abstract Steampunk can be defined as a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy featuring fictional technology based on the steam power of the 19th century. Characterized by gears, goggles, and fantastical inventions like airships and automatons, this uniquely bizarre offshoot of SF has recently evolved into a cultural phenomenon. This research paper explores the origins, progression, and modern manifestations of steampunk science fiction in order to discover the reasons for its recent popular- ity. In this paper, I will argue that steampunk has gained increased popularity because it invokes feelings and reactions to the first technological revolution that have become lost in our apathetic modern society. The Victorian sense of won- der and potential mixed with fear of what this new age could mean was what inspired writers such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, whose works are cited as some of the main inspirations of steampunk. Modern society stands on a similar threshold, but unlike the Victorians we lack this sense of mystified fascination; instead, technology has become commonplace and dull. Steampunk is a reflection on the relationship between man and machine that emphasizes the weird and whimsical elements of romanticized Victorian technology to usher in a new era of wonder and progress.
