These technologies have many convenient uses in everyday life, but law enforcement agencies have expressed concern that they could be exploited by offenders and might alter existing offending patterns and habits. For environmental criminologists, they have the potential to open up new approaches to conducting research. This paper draws on the results of earlier studies in related fields and a handful of criminological studies to discuss how these online mapping applications can trigger new research questions, and how they could be considered a valuable methodological addition to criminological research. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Crime and Spatial Analysis of Vehicle Theft in a Non-Urban Region Motor vehicle theft in non-urban areas does not reveal the well-recognized hot spots often associated with crime in urban areas. These findings resulted from a study of 2003 vehicle thefts in a four-county region of western North Carolina comprised primarily of small towns and unincorporated areas. While the study suggested that point maps have limited value for areas with low volume and geographically-dispersed crime, the steps necessary to create regional maps – including collecting and validating crime locations with Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates – created a reliable dataset that permitted more in-depth analysis.

    CHAPTER 2 Crime Mapping: Spatial and Temporal Challenges JERRY RATCLIFFE INTRODUCTION Crime opportunities are neither uniformly nor randomly organized in space and time. As a result, crime mappers can unlock these spatial patterns and strive for a better theoretical understanding of the role of geography and opportunity, as well as enabling practical crime prevention solutions that are tailored to specific places. The evolution of crime mapping has heralded a new era in spatial criminology, and a re-emergence of the importance of place as one of the cornerstones essential to an understanding of crime and criminality. While early criminological inquiry in France and Britain had a spatial component, much of mainstream criminology for the last century has labored to explain criminality from a dispositional per- spective, trying to explain why a particular offender or group has a propensity to commit crime. This traditional perspective resulted in criminologists focusing on individuals or on communities where the community extended from the neighborhood to larger aggregations (Weisburd et al. 2004). Even when the results lacked ambiguity, the findings often lacked policy relevance. However, crime mapping has revived interest and reshaped many criminol- ogists appreciation for the importance of local geography as a determinant of crime that may be as important as criminal motivation. Between the individual and large urban areas (such as cities and regions) lies a spatial scale where crime varies considerably and does so at a frame of reference that is often amenable to localized crime prevention techniques. For example, without the opportunity afforded by enabling environmental weaknesses, such as poorly lit streets, lack of protective surveillance, or obvious victims (such as overtly wealthy tourists or unsecured vehicles), many offenders would not be as encouraged to commit crime.

Street View app and the Samsung Gear 360 2 The Street View app (for both Android and iOS) is what you use to create and upload Street Views. The Samsung Gear 360 is one of about four 360 cameras that the Google Street View app is setup to work with (meaning the app can control the camera pretty seamlessly). Most people use the Street View app only to view off-road street views. You can also view off-road street views in plain old Google Maps, but the Street View app makes it a little easier to find user generated content. If you have a VR device such as the Google Cardboard, you can view Street Views in 3 cardboard mode .​ In terms of content creation, the Street View app has three main functions: i) control the camera, ii) process images (which includes stitching them together, blurring faces and license plates, adding locations as needed, and linking nearby photos), and iii) upload the images to Google Street View (after which they’ll be available in Google Maps immediately). The Samsung Gear can also record 360 video. For that you need the Samsung Gear 360 Manager (or another app).

We compared GEE and DHUS single pixel time series for the period from April 2016 to September 2020 and identified two sources of this discrepancy: the ground pixel position and reprojection. The ground pixel position of OLCI product can be determined in two ways: from geo-coordinates (DHUS) or from tie-point coordinates (GEE). We recommend using geo-coordinates for pixel extraction from the original data. When the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) Pixel Extraction Tool is used, an additional distance check has to be conducted to exclude pixels that lay further than 212 m from the point of interest. Even geo-coordinates-based pixel extraction requires the homogeneity of the target area at a 700 m diameter (49 ha) footprint (double of the pixel resolution). The GEE OLCI dataset can be safely used if the homogeneity assumption holds at 2700 m diameter (9-by-9 OLCI pixels) or if the uncertainty in the radiance of 10% is not critical for the application.
