Preparing Your Heart for Worship July 25, 2021 “The Sermon on the Mount is not to be commended, it is to be carried out…There are many people who have praised this Sermon but who have not manifested it in their lives. Beware of such people, says our Lord. It is not what a tree looks like that matters; you test it by its fruit.” – Martin Lloyd Jones 1 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CALL TO WORSHIP JULY 25, 2021 JULY from Psalm 47 Pastor: Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. Congregation: How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great king over all the earth! Pastor: God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets. Congregation: Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. Pastor: For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. Congregation: God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. Together: For the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted! Please stand if able COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 2 JULY 25, 2021 JULY HYMNS OF PRAISE “O Worship the King” Trinity Hymnal #2 O worship the King all-glorious above, O gratefully sing his power and his love: our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise. O tell of his might and sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm. Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in you do we trust, nor find you to fail. Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend! 3 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH “Jesus, I Come” JULY 25, 2021 JULY Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come; Jesus I come. Into Thy freedom, gladness and light, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of my sickness into Thy health, Out of my wanting and into Thy wealth, Out of my sin and into Thyself, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of my shameful failure and loss, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into the glorious gain of Thy cross, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm, Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm, Out of distress into jubilant psalm, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of unrest and arrogant pride, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into Thy blessed will to abide, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of myself to dwell in Thy love, Out of despair into raptures above, Upward forever on wings like a dove, Jesus, I come to Thee. COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 4 JULY 25, 2021 JULY Out of the fear and dread of the tomb, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into the joy and light of Thy home, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of the depths of ruin untold, Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold, Ever Thy glorious face to behold, Jesus, I come to Thee. PRAYER OF CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Because Christ Jesus died in your place, for your sins, you are forgiven. People: Hallelujah! Praise God! OFFERTORY 5 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH HYMN OF ASSURANCE JULY 25, 2021 JULY “God Be Merciful to Me” Trinity Hymnal #486 God, be merciful to me; On Thy grace I rest my plea Plenteous in compassion Thou, Blot out my transgressions now; Wash me, make me pure within; Cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. My transgressions I confess; Grief and guilt my soul oppress. I have sinned against Thy grace, And provoked Thee to Thy face. I confess Thy judgement just; Speechless, I Thy mercy trust. I am evil, born in sin; Thou desirest truth within. Thou alone my Savior art, Teach Thy wisdom to my heart; Make me pure, Thy grace bestow, Wash me whiter than the snow. Broken, humbled to the dust By Thy wrath and judgment just, Let my contrite heart rejoice, And in gladness hear Thy voice; From my sins O hide Thy face, Blot them out in boundless grace. COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 6 JULY 25, 2021 JULY Gracious God, my heart renew, Make my spirit right and true. Cast me not away from Thee, Let Thy Spirit dwell in me; Thy salvation’s joy impart, Steadfast make my willing heart. Sinners then shall learn from me, And return, O God, to Thee Savior all my guilt remove, And my tongue shall sing Thy love Touch my silent lips, O Lord, And my mouth shall praise accord SERMON TEXT Matthew 7:13-23 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. continued on the next page 7 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a JULY 25, 2021 JULY diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ Leader: This is the word of the LORD. People: Thanks be to God. COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 8 JULY 25, 2021 JULY SERMON: “Come On In” Rev. Lanier Wood Matthew 7:13-23 9 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH THE LORD’S SUPPER JULY 25, 2021 JULY AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father, Almighty; maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10 JULY 25, 2021 JULY PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND WORDS OF INSTITUTION Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my savior. Amen. Prayer of Humble Access I do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but only in your righteousness credited to me. I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose manner is always to show mercy. Grant me, therefore, O Lord, the grace to commune now with Christ by faith, that I may evermore live with him and he in me. Amen. 11 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH COMMUNION MUSIC JULY 25, 2021 JULY “Throne Room Song” Jesus is in this room Here right now, here right now Making this place I stand Holy ground, holy ground Your Spirit moves and breathes All around, all around All good and perfect things Flowing down, flowing down If all of the heavens are singing along With the saints and the elders in glorious song And the praises they sing never seem to get old Then I’ll stay here forever singing Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty, over all You were, You are, and You’ll be forever The King, enthroned, in glorious splendor Holy, holy Lord Gentle love calling me Closer still, closer still Jesus, You’re guiding me To Your will, to Your will COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 12 JULY 25, 2021 JULY If all of the heavens are singing along With the saints and the elders in glorious song And the praises they sing never seem to get old Then I’ll stay here forever singing Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty, over all You were, You are, and You’ll be forever The King, enthroned, in glorious splendor Holy, holy Lord The veil is torn and the doors fling wide I see glory as I run inside The throne room, before You, I bow, I bow (3x) Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty, over all You were, You are, and You’ll be forever The King, enthroned, in glorious splendor Holy, holy Lord Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty, over all You were, You are, and You’ll be forever The King, enthroned, in glorious splendor (3x) Holy, holy Lord Jesus is in this room Making this place I stand Holy ground, holy ground 13 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE JULY 25, 2021 JULY The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.
