Knight Spring 2009 (This document last revised March 18, 2009) 1 The nature of Egyptian religion (intro) The Egyptian idea of \deity" is a difficult one to pin down. The most frequently used word for deity, ' 4 ntr (or nTr), resembles the English word god in that it can be used as either a common noun, referring to one of numerous divine beings, or as a proper noun, referring to the Supreme Being. Much more problematic than the word used, however, are the details of what the gods do and even who they are. Gods become conflated with one another; most notably, there are (at least) two gods named Horus, designated \Elder" and \Younger", and they share a number of traits, often being confused (deliberately or mistakenly). The gods usurp one another's roles, or delegate their roles to others, with astounding frequency. It is Set's role to protect the sun god from the serpent of chaos|except when Horus has that function. The Supreme Being is Re-Atum, except when he is Amun-Re, except when he is simply Re or simply Atum or . Adding still further to the complication is the local character of Egyptian religion. Every nome had a patron god, and while some of the gods patronized more than one nome, there was plenty of variety. We have already considered this to some degree: we have noted Thebes, for example, as having Amun for a patron, and observed that the military rise of the Thebans in the Middle and New Kingdoms were responsible for the enrichment and empowerment of Amun's cult. -

Franci CAMNES, Firenze The snake, for its primeval power and chthonic life, has always had a central but ambivalent role, in Egypt as well as in the Ancient Near Eastern world. Here the semantic field of the serpent is mainly negative: just for example, the god Mot, the deification of the death, can also appear as a serpent;1 the world äl-mā-yuḏkar “snake” in the semitic dialect of Sana means “the one who is not named” is a clear evidence of a linguistic taboo; and the Common Semitic word NAḤAŠ “snake” was related with the meaning “prophecy” and “exorcist formula”.2 From the reading of the Egyptian documents and representations on the tomb and temple’s walls it is clear that in Egypt the symbolic significance of the snake figure was intimately considered powerful and productive during all the Egyptian history. It was used to express different and wide meanings – political, religious, philosophical – because in Egypt the snake could be also seen, at the same time, as an evil and dangerous entity (Apophis above all), as a protective deity (the goddess Wadjet, for example): one can easily find in the Pyramid Texts a long list of serpents, as evil entity e.g. the hpnwi-snake, as protective entity, e.g. the ḏnn-serpent, a clear evidence of an interesting quantity of more ancient myths that merged in the Corpus of the Pyramid Texts. The example of the snake-god Nehebkaw is paradigmatic: in the Utterance 229 the god Atum pressing down on the vertebrae of this serpent have stilled the turmoil in Heliopolis; but in the utterance 510 the deceased king is identified with Nehebkaw.3 A double meaning that had been created, doubtless, by the natural relationship of the snake with the creative process, generating a continuous contradiction, for a modern point of view. -

This paper has benefited much from the constructive criticism of the anonymous referees of Kernos. 1 In Ptolemaic Egypt, two types of private dedications evolved, relating rulers, subjects and gods, most frequently, Sarapis and Isis.1 They were formed in two ways: the offering was made either to Sarapis and Isis (dative) for the Ptolemaic kings (ὑπέρ +genitive) — hereafter, these will be called the hyper-formula dedications2 — or to Sarapis, Isis (dative) and the Ptolemaic kings (dative), the so-called ‘double dedications’. -

A BRONZE PAIL OF ATHENA ALALKOMENIA (PLATES 31-34) T HE remarkable archaic Greek bronze vessel published here (P1. 31, a) was l.4 purchased in Mantinea in Arcadia in the spring of 1957 and donated to the Museum in Tegea where other antiquities from the same region have their abode. It had been found by a local shepherd some distance to the north of the ruins of Man- tinea but, unfortunately, the exact location of the discovery could not be ascertained.' The major part of the vessel is preserved, including about half of its upper profiled edge and one attachment for the handle which passed through its upper ring. The whole of this ring is still filled with iron and it is evident that the missing handle was made of this material. The carefully proportioned body has a height of 0.241 m. to the upper edge of the lip. Its largest diameter, 0.215 m., is slightly smaller than the total height and exactly the same both at the outer edge of the lip and at the greatest width of the body which, in turn, occurs precisely half way between that edge and the bottom of the vessel, 0.12 m. distant from both. The upper face of the lip inclines outward slightly to allow overspilling liquid to run off, as it were, from an architectural cornice. The proportion of diameter to height, the rounded bottom and the contraction of the width under the lip combine to give the impression of an elastic curvilinear rhythm to the generally ovoid form. -

Celtic Egyptians: Isis Priests of the Lineage of Scota Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers – the primary creative genius behind the famous British occult group, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn – and his wife Moina Mathers established a mystery religion of Isis in fin-de-siècle Paris. Lawrence Durdin-Robertson, his wife Pamela, and his sister Olivia created the Fellowship of Isis in Ireland in the early 1970s. Although separated by over half a century, and not directly associated with each other, both groups have several characteristics in common. Each combined their worship of an ancient Egyptian goddess with an interest in the Celtic Revival; both claimed that their priestly lineages derived directly from the Egyptian queen Scota, mythical foundress of Ireland and Scotland; and both groups used dramatic ritual and theatrical events as avenues for the promulgation of their Isis cults. The Parisian Isis movement and the Fellowship of Isis were (and are) historically-inaccurate syncretic constructions that utilised the tradition of an Egyptian origin of the peoples of Scotland and Ireland to legitimise their founders’ claims of lineal descent from an ancient Egyptian priesthood. To explore this contention, this chapter begins with brief overviews of Isis in antiquity, her later appeal for Enlightenment Freemasons, and her subsequent adoption by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. It then explores the Parisian cult of Isis, its relationship to the Celtic Revival, the myth of the Egyptian queen Scota, and examines the establishment of the Fellowship of Isis. The Parisian mysteries of Isis and the Fellowship of Isis have largely been overlooked by critical scholarship to date; the use of the medieval myth of Scota by the founders of these groups has hitherto been left unexplored. -

Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -
Chastity and Phallic Worship
CHASTITY AND PHALLIC WORSHIP. BY THE EDITOR. CHASTITY is regarded as the virtue of virtues, and rightly so, for the future of mankind depends on it. Chastity is the characteristic feature that distinguishes the Teutonic peoples, and to it Tacitus does not hesitate to attribute the native vigor of the race. While there was so little prudery among the inhabitants of ancient Germany that the two sexes enjoyed bathing together in the river, actions of indecency were severely punished and early marriage was held in contempt. Tacitus wrote his book on Germany with the avowed purpose of giving his countrymen a warning, and setting them an example in the undefiled Northern races; and his words sound to the his- torian like a prophecy ; for the sturdy sons of this chastest of all the nations have overrun the earth. Had they not been fighting too much among themselves, had they not been exterminated in many of their too easily acquired new homes by the lack of both concentrated effort and political foresight, the old world would be by this time predominantly Germanic. But even as matters stand now, the Goths having lost again all the territories in Southern and Western Europe, especially Italy and Spain, and also Africa, the Teutons are practically still in possession of the world. Central Europe, i. e., Germany, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, further England with its colonies, and North America are predominantly of Teutonic blood, and they hold in their hands the balance of power. What is the rest of the world— all the Romance nations, the Slavic nations, and the Orientals— in comparison to their united strength? On a close scrutiny of their rise to power we need not hesitate to say that their success is due to their family life, the relative purity of their morality, the mental and physical health resulting therefrom ; in a word, to chastity.
