We aim to carry books, zines, and periodicals that are not available in most libraries, particularly those from small and independent publishers. We achieve this through careful selection of materials, coordinating with the community, volunteers, staff, and board on acquisition decisions, and having our book collection available through the University library system TRELLIS. Over the last year, we’ve been working to integrate more of our collections into the Library system. Suggestions for new materials are always welcome! RadiOPIRG RadiOPIRG is our weekly radio show on CFRU 93.3FM, Guelph’s campus community radio station. We keep you updated on OPIRG activities and events; and play talks, interviews and music focused on environmental and social justice that you won’t hear on main- stream radio. RadiOPIRG continues to air on Thursdays on CFRU 93.3FM in the 12-1pm time slot. Tune in, or listen live or to the archives online at www.cfru.ca. Volunteers are always welcome – it’s fun, and no experience is necessary! All CFRU training is free but is not required to participate in RadiOPIRG. Let us know if you're part of a group or project focused on environmental and social justice and would like to come on the show. OPIRG—The Provincial Network OPIRG Guelph is one of the twelve Ontario-based PIRGs that participate as members of Ontario PIRG. Each OPIRG chapter has two seats on the Board of Directors of Ontario PIRG, which is incor- porated as a charitable organization. Ontario PIRG meetings are held at least twice yearly in per- son, one of which is the AGM. Membership in Ontario PIRG means access to great programming and development opportunities like the Public Interest Schools, Board Training Schools and Issue-based Network Meetings. This network provides the PIRGs with a valuable tool for sharing skills and experiences that make us stronger organi- zations. Any volunteer at an OPIRG can contribute to the provincial network! Each PIRG holds a portfolio which are designed to spread the responsibility for tasks amongst the chapters so that each chapter member can be involved with the running of the organization. Each Action Group receives funds, organizational support, training, space to meet and organize, and access to OPIRG's networks of student and community activists. All you need to start a group is an idea for a project or campaign that fits within the OPIRG mandate. We can help you to find other interested people to work with, and go over the proposal form with you.     Reconnecting the Great Lakes Water Cycle High Returns on Better Water Management for the City of Guelph Greater Lakes Project | March 2015 The Great Lakes Commission’s Greater Lakes project explores municipal water conservation/efficiency programs and green infra- structure projects that address human water needs in ways that are more strongly linked to the natural water cycle. This fact sheet presents our analysis of Guelph’s water resources and suggests additional programs and projects that will result in a resilient water system more in sync with nature, making it more economically and environmentally sustainable. Guelph has made major strides in water conservation and efficiency, making it a leader in this field. Nevertheless, our analysis shows that more work can show measurable and significant results, particularly with the use of green infrastructure programs. The Fractured Water Cycle Guelph, just like other municipalities, has been built in a way that disrupted the nat- ural water cycle. Water supply has been withdrawn from the ground or a stream, but is rarely returned to the same place. Once used, water was treated as waste – whether as wastewater or stormwater – to be gotten rid of as quickly as possible through pipes discharging to streams, rivers or the Great Lakes. By moving rainwater away from their homes and businesses as rapidly as possible, the water is prevent- ed from percolating into the ground, where it can restore local water supplies and be available for the ecosystem. The resulting stormwater runoff discharges at exces- sive rates leading to erosion, pollutant transport and downstream flooding. We have now come to realize that restoring the natural hydrology is a cost-effective and sus- tainable approach to addressing these problems.

Groundwater and surface water are linked at the streambed interface, leading to shared sustainability issues. The sharing of common pathways into and out of the streambed fracture networks provides opportunity for the exchange of thermal, chemical and biological constituents, affecting water quality and ecosystem health. Alluvial rivers exhibit granular beds and their flow patterns are well understood. Much of our water-resource management decisions are based on alluvial river conceptual models using an equivalent porous media (EPM) approach. Since bedrock rivers are more challenging to instrument, their complex flow patterns have not been addressed in the discrete fracture network (DFN) context, thus, there is a gap in the literature. This is the first study of a bedrock river yielding a field-based conceptual model of the spatio- temporal variability of groundwater fluxes and head differentials between groundwater and surface water in the upper 0.30 m of an intact dolostone streambed. A field site along the Eramosa River, in Guelph, ON, Canada, was developed, where the longitudinally-stepped profile of a bedrock riffle-pool sequence exists within a channel meander.

The ORA is pleased to support the Eden Mills Eramosa River Conservation Association (EMERCA) application for an EcoAction Community Funding Grant for the East Branch Weir Removal Project on the Eramosa River in Eden Mills, Ontario. This Project includes the removal of an existing steel control structure at the top of the East Channel of the Eramosa River, and the naturalization and remediation of this section of the River. Removing the weir would expand the coldwater fishery, increase flows and build resilience to the effects of a warming climate. Weirs change the basic hydrological characteristics of streams by reducing flow velocity and subsequent changes in temperature, turbidity, and water quality. These changes can negatively affect native species of fish and other aquatic life. Climate change is expected to amplify these negative effects (e.g. protracted low-flow regimes, elevated water temperature). This Project will

Purpose • To measure groundwater quality as determined by the natural chemistry of the bedrock and overburden deposits, as well as any changes in quality due to anthropogenic activities • To address groundwater quality impairments, whether they are natural or human induced in order to ensure a safe and clean supply of groundwater for human consumption and ecosystem functioning Ecosystem Objective The ecosystem objective for this indicator is to ensure that groundwater quality remains at or approaches natural conditions. State of the Ecosystem Background Natural groundwater quality issues and human induced changes in groundwater quality both have the potential to affect our ability to use groundwater safely. Some constituents found naturally in groundwater renders some groundwater reserves inappropriate for certain uses. Growing urban populations, along with historical and present industrial and agricultural activity, have caused significant harm to groundwater quality, thereby obstructing the use of the resource and damaging the environment. Understanding natural groundwater quality provides a baseline from which to compare, while monitoring anthropogenic changes can allow identification of temporal trends and assess any improvements or further degradation in quality.     History of Erin Township History of Erin Township Name Erin Township is said to have been so named by the surveyors, because it was surveyed immediately after the Townships of Albion and Caledon. Albion suggested England, Caledon suggested Scotland, and it was thought fitting that the third should suggest Ireland; so they called it Erin, the poetic name for Ireland. Survey The survey of the Southern part of Erin Township started in 1819, by Deputy Surveyor Charles Kennedy of Esquesing Township, and Donald Black of Eramosa Twp. Starting at the east side, they continued across to the Eramosa boundary, as far as 17 sideroad, leaving a gore at the Eramosa side. In 1820, the northern part of the township was surveyed. The 1906 Atlas names O'Reilly as one of the surveyors, but the History of Erin Township in 1967, states that Donald Black and John Burt continued the survey above 17 sideroad. But instead of beginning at the Caledon side, they started at the Eramosa side, ending up with a gore along the Caledon boundary. This accounts for the jog in the lines at 17 sideroad. J.W. Burt had the instruments used by his father and Mr. Kennedy in the survey, and in 1956, Goldwin Burt presented these instruments to Wellington County Museum at Elora. When the surveyors finished their arduous work, they were offered land in the newly-surveyed Township as their pay, or part of it; but not being favourably impressed with the wilderness, they refused to accept it. Mr. Kennedy was offered 1,000 acres, beginning at lot 14, on each side of the 9th line, to lot 17 inclusive; but in his refusal, he reported the land to be of little value.

    Carlisle Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Community Liaison Committee (CLC) Meeting #2 Tuesday, April 15, 2014 | 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm Carlisle Community Centre Meeting Summary 1. Agenda Review, Opening Remarks and Introduction Mr. Jim Faught, Lura Consulting, provided opening remarks and explained his role as the neutral facilitator. Eleven (11) CLC members were present at the meeting. Mr. Faught led a round of introductions and emphasized that the CLC operates on consensus basis with the goal of reaching agreement amongst members. He reviewed the agenda and noted that there would be one additional item: a review of the minutes from CLC Meeting #1. 2. Review of Minutes from CLC #1 No comments on the meeting minutes were received by the project team to date. A deadline of Thursday April 17, 2014 was agreed upon for providing comments, after which the final minutes will be posted online for public access. 3. Water Conservation Presentation Mr. Wayne Galliher, Water Conservation Project Manager, City of Guelph, provided a presentation on the City of Guelph’s Water Conservation and Efficiency Program. The presentation included: - Background on Guelph Water Conservation Strategy and Programming - Program Elements and Incentives - Peak Demand Management Tools and Opportunities 4.
