Start a Story About Nick Drake review of Pink Moon. An okay book about Amanda Pink Moon and a Volkswagen advert, though. May 31, Josh rated it it was amazing Pink Moon musicnonfiction. A great balance between telling the story of Drake, the album itself, and its peculiar place in music history as a lost treasure rediscovered through a TV commercial, of all things. Readers who were familiar with Pink Moon Drake before the commercial probably won't understand why Petrusich devotes so much exploration to it. But I don't think you can tell the story of Pink Moon without telling the story of how a mass market ad gave a forgotten musician several orders of magnitude more acclaim than he'd ever had before. As one of the legions of Nick Drake fans that first heard of him that way, the book made tons of sense to me, and I really did want to know as much as possible about the creative Pink Moon behind the infamous ad just as much as the album itself. There is a scene in the brilliant but short-lived television series Freaks and Geeks where Daniel, a freak, has an argument with his mother about dropping out of school, retreats to his room, puts Black Flag's seminal Damaged on his turntable, and nods his head to "Rise Above. I can sympathize, however, with the difficulty of portraying something like this. Aside from the studied nodding of one's head while listening, or perhaps fingering the cover art, studying its liner notes, how exactly do you do something like this? How can you impart to your audience or readers the immense importance of hearing a record for the first or hundredth time? All of the action a Story About Nick Drake internal and the quality of what's coming out of the speakers is entirely subjective. Admittedly, this is a little easier in the written word, and I think Amanda Petrusich does an admirable job of describing the way that Nick Drake's Pink Moon has left an indelible mark on her. There's another writer who I admire, Noel Murray, writing a weekly column titled Popless, in which he listens to his entire music collection in alphabetical order by artist and describes his personal experiences with those artists. It's a huge undertaking, both in the time it takes to complete and in the challenge of making an entry about the Kinks interesting to Pink Moon reader if he is, say, not a Kinks fan. How many ways can you say, "This album was, like, so important Pink Moon me, man"? I admire both Murray and Petrusich for being able to elevate the discussion above that, even if the limitations of doing so are still a bit stifling. The short quotes from artists describing their experiences with Pink Moon that Petrusich inserts in her book feel more like the undercooked scene from Freaks and Geeks; we get so little, and we're expected to extrapolate from that. I guess what I'm saying is that writing like this seems to require an attached and maybe long narrative. The middle section of the book was interesting but not terribly so the extent of Drake's substance abuse was news to me; his unpopularity was not. The final section, however, I found to be the most rewarding: speaking with the creative forces behind the Volkswagen Cabrio ad and waxing philosophic about the place of art in a culture obsessed with commodity. In other words, did they sell out Nick Drake when they put him in a car commercial? Or is a question like that even relevant anymore? It would a Story About Nick Drake hypocritical of me to chastise those involved in creating the commercial for using Drake's song. I would likely not have heard of him if they hadn't used it or, probably more accurately, not heard of him as early as I did. But that's not to say that the commercial folks don't come off as a bit, well, how you would expect advertising people to come across. I'm not going to waste time arguing that artists shouldn't be selling their songs to advertisers, for a variety of reasons. For one, I don't really believe artists shouldn't sell their songs to advertisers. Secondly, I've never been in the position to sell a song; I've never had to decide between maintaining my "artistic credibility" and paying that month's rent. So who am I to judge? I will say this, though: the quotes taken from Shane Hutton the one who decided on A Story About Nick Drake inclusion in the Cabrio Pink Moon were everything A Story About Nick Drake needed to hear on why I don't like advertising people exceptionally cringe-inducing were the ones where he was boasting about how they've "changed the fucking game" etc. All in all, a really well-written book, with lots packed into its short amount of pages. Everything you ever wanted to know about Nick Drake, and unfortunately there's not a lot to cover for such a short life, is here. In addition, short paragraphs from artists like Lou Barlow and Robyn Hitchcock on Drake's influence appear at the end of chapters. I think the Beach Boys one stands out in my mind for discussing everything but Pet Sounds, the subject of the damn book for godsakes. Anyway, maybe author Amanda Petrusich devotes too much time in the end to the famous Volkswagen commercial, but it is important to the overall legacy of Pink Moon. Advertising introduced the album to a whole new audience, giving Drake the attention that he so deserved, but never saw in his lifetime. Reading the pop culture analysis of the commercial was interesting, like a college thesis but not as boring, especially in the discussion of art versus commerce, a topic I spent a lot of time writing about in grad school.
