The source since 1870 A basket of goodies his week we have a lot more to tell you than we can fit in this edition of Grocott’s Mail. Governance watchdog PSAM has written a People’s SOPAT – what the Premier should be saying about improving the lives of the citizens of the Eastern Cape – read it here: bit. ly/GrocPeopleSopa Speaking of budgets, Wednesday’s (21 February) national budget by Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba will do little to lift our collective spirit after the shock VAT rise from 14 to 15% and a cumulative fuel levy increase of almost 50 cents. No doubt the municipality will also want some of its reve- nue streams adjusted upwards in the coming weeks. What is certain is that these are tough times for South Africa, the Eastern Cape and for Makana Municipality. But just as Min- ister Gigaba urged all residents and citizens to recognise the need for sacrifice, so too should we in our fair town. We’re all hopeful that the seconded Municipal Manager will get a handle on our financial affairs and put us on a path to a bal- anced budget. That process will be painful for everyone so we should all brace for the tough times; because they are surely ahead of us. Kings’ injury

The Southern Kings suffered a major blow in the centre when Harlon Klaasen suffered a hamstring injury during the Kings’ 26-12 defeat against Ospreys over the past weekend. Klaasen will be out for a number of weeks. Jacques Nel has been flown out to replace him in Europe for the Kings’ next match against Leinster.

Fifth Biathle

The fifth Biathle League event of the season will take place in Port Elizabeth this weekend. This is one of four league events remaining for the season, meaning that there is still time for athletes to complete the three events required to qualify for the Eastern Cape team participating in the SA champs in PE later this year.
