  • Microfossil-Like Tourmaline Microlites in Early Proterozoic Nodular Chert at Kiihtelysvaara, Eastern Finland
MICROFOSSIL-LIKE TOURMALINE MICROLITES IN EARLY PROTEROZOIC NODULAR CHERT AT KIIHTELYSVAARA, EASTERN FINLAND JUHA KARHU and HUGH O'BRIEN KARHU, JUHA & O'BRIEN, HUGH 1992: Microfossil-like tourmaline microlites in early Proterozoic nodular chert at Kiihtelysvaara, eastern Finland. Bull. Geol. Soc. Finland 64 Part 1, 113—118. Many Proterozoic silicified sedimentary carbonates have been reported to con- tain remains of early micro-organisms. One of these localities in the Fennoscandi- an Shield is the village of Hyypiä at Kiihtelysvaara in eastern Finland, where a nodular chert contains microfossil-like objects, named Hyypiana jatulica n. gen., species R. Tynni. The original thin sections and grain mounts from Kiihtelysvaara were reinves- tigated petrographically, and similar objects in a new grain mount from the origi- nal drill core specimen were analysed using microprobe. Petrographical and geochem- ical results prove that the microfossil-like objects in these samples from the nodu- lar chert at Kiihtelysvaara are mineralogic pseudomicrofossils consisting of tour- maline microlites. Their chemical composition is similar to dravitic tourmalines from a cherty dolomite formation located in Kuusamo, eastern Finland. • Unravelling the Spirals: a Serial Thin-Section Study and Three-Dimensional Computer-Aided Reconstruction of Spiral-Shaped Inclusion Trails in Garnet Porphyroblasts S
    J. metamorphic Geol., 1993, 11, 621-634 Unravelling the spirals: a serial thin-section study and three-dimensional computer-aided reconstruction of spiral-shaped inclusion trails in garnet porphyroblasts S. E. JOHNSON School of Earth Sciences, Macguarie University, Sydney, New South Wales, 2109, Australia ABSTRACT Seventy-seven spatially orientated, serial thin sections cut from a single rock reveal changes in the geometry of spiral-shaped inclusion trails (SSlTs) in garnet porphyroblasts. The observed SITS are doubly curved, non-cylindrical surfaces, with total inclusion-trail curvature decreasing systematically from the cores to the rims of porphyroblasts. The three-dimensional geometry of the SSITs, reconstructed with the aid of computer graphics, shows that the orientations of spiral axes defined by the SSITs are not related in any expected nor predictable way to the main foliation in the matrix. This suggests continued deformation after or during the latest stages of porphyroblast growth, which has important implications for the use of SSITs as shear-sense indicators. Whether the formation of SSITs involves significant porphyroblast rotation with respect to a geographically fixed reference frame cannot be determined from the available data. Key wocds: computer graphics; garnet porphyroblasts; serial thin sections; spiral-shaped inclusion trails; three-dimensional reconstruction. (1912, pp. 111, 178), much controversy still surrounds their INTRODUCTION mode of formation. The controversy centres around This paper presents a serial thin-section study and a whether formation of SSITs requires porphyroblast three-dimensional (3-D) computer-aided reconstruction of rotation relative to a geographically fixed reference frame spiral-shaped inclusion trails (SITs) in garnet porphyro- (see Johnson, 1993, for review).

Both derive from an asymmetry in parental investment (Trivers, 1972). Considering classic sex roles, females are the limiting resource due to a lower reproductive potential caused by anisogamy, so that males compete for access to choosy females (Trivers, 1972; Kokko & Monaghan, 2001). However, female competition and male mate choice have been observed as well (Drickamer, Gowaty & Holmes, 2000; Moore, Gowaty; Wallin & Moore, 2001; Gowaty, 2004). Sexual selection operates on traits that influence reproductive success (Clutton-Brock, 2004; Darwin, 1871), including visual or acoustic signals displaying information about the bearers’ condition (Fisher, 1930; Grafen, 1990; Kokko, Brooks, McNamara & Houston, 2002; Zuk, 1991).
