Bhandara, established in 1993 by Shri Kisanrao Khobragade Education Society, Armori, Distt. Gadchiroli in Taluka Lakhandur, is affiliated to RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur. The College is situated in a rural, economically and socially backward, naxal-affected region of eastern Maharashtra. The college was founded with the Vision and Mission of providing a platform for quality higher education to the aspiring students of this region irrespective of their social and economic background and to develop them into skilled, empowered and responsible citizens with good moral values and sense of duty towards Nation building. The college, started with a modest beginning, has developed into a sole institution of this area catering to a large number of aspiring students coming from far and distant areas. To develop necessary skills and stay updated with current knowledge to face the challenges of today‘s competitive world various curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are included in an academic year. The College has all the three Faculties viz., Arts, Commerce and Science with several choices at undergraduate and postgraduate levels with as many as 12 subjects at UG & 05 subjects at PG in Arts faculty, all compulsory subjects in Commerce and 09 subjects at UG & 01 subject at PG in Science faculty. Besides this, the college offers the facility of distance education through Yashwantrao Chawhan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nashik. The College has all the three faculties on Full Grant and has built an adequate infrastructure with modern facilities for a dynamic teaching-learning environment. The College extends all the support for getting financial assistance such as GOI Scholarship and other aids. Surrounded by reserved forests and hillocks the College has maintained its campus to have a serene and eco- friendly atmosphere with seasonal flowers and tree plantation. Presently, there are 01 Associate Professor and 29 Assistant Professors and 09 temporary teachers with a non-teaching and administrative staff of 12 persons. To have a service towards society, the College arranges several activities and awareness programmes throughout the year through Teachers and Student‘s dedicated participation in National Service Schemes and Literary/Social/Scientific bodies of the College. The members of administration of Education Society promote a culture of cohesiveness and dedication towards achieving the Vision and Mission for which the College has been established. I, as Principal and Head of the Institution, congratulate Mr. Rakesh Wasnik and members of NAAC Steering Committee for preparing Self Study Report (SSR) with much enthusiasm and dedication and extend congratulations to all the staff members who helped directly or indirectly for completion of SSR. Turkar Member Y C College, Lakhandur viii Self-Study Report - 2016 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Yashwantrao Chawhan Arts, Commerce & Science College, Lakhandur is founded by Shri Kisanrao Khobragade Education Society, Armori, Distt. Gadchiroli in 1993 with a noble aim of providing a platform for higher education to the students of this rural and educationally, economically and socially backward region of Maharashtra. The Yashwantrao Chawhan College, Lakhandur is a gem of the vision of Shri Bhagyawan ji Khobragade, President of the Education Society and is built to empower rural and tribal youth with quality education, knowledge and skills. The College, since its inception in 1993, constantly strives on to encourage underprivileged, rural and tribal youth to develop understanding of core human values and enshrine it through education with a right balance of traditional upbringing and modern world competency. The College being situated in the rural and naxal-affected region Taluka Lakhandur of District Bhandara, with adjoining backward talukas of Districts of Gadchiroli and Gondia, initially had to encounter several adverse situations. However, with sheer determination and dedication of Administration and Staff towards fulfilling the education needs of rural youth, it has reached a stable focal point and progressed to being a prime institution of higher education of this region. The College is well connected to nearby villages by proper roads. The College is situated on the Sakoli-Wadsa Road which connects to National Highway AH-46 towards Sakoli (~50km) and connects to rail stations at Wadsa (18km) and Arjuni- Moregaon (20km) on South East Central Railway (Delhi-Chennai/Nagpur-Hyderabad line). The College is surrounded by the natural beauty of reserved forests (Lakhandur and Pauni) and small hillocks besides agricultural fields. The College campus is beautifully maintained with plantation and landscaping with seasonal flowering plants. The Yashwantrao Chawhan College presently has the entire three Faculties – Arts, Commerce and Science at Full Grant. The College has a team of qualified, competent and committed Faculty members, Non-teaching and Administrative Staff. The College had an enrollment of about 2417 regular students in 2015-16 in Arts, Commerce and Science Faculties besides enrollment of about 701 students in YCMOU Center. The College stands tall as the only institution in the region being able to cater to the educational need of students coming over from a wide and distant geographical area having a choice of admission in various faculties viz., in Arts (11 subjects at UG and 5 subjects at PG level), Commerce (all compulsory subjects at UG level) and Science (9 subjects at UG and 1 subject at PG level) as well as in YCMOU. The Criterion-wise summary of SSR report is given as follows. Criterion I: Curricular Aspects The vision of the College is to develop students from underprivileged, socially and economically backward region into the skilled, empowered and responsible citizens with care for human values, culture, heritage and environment with a scientific bent of mind. To ensure dissemination of current knowledge and to provide Y C College, Lakhandur ix Self-Study Report - 2016 a developing platform to face challenges of today‘s competitive world various curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are included in a academic year are communicated through our website and prospectus as well as through orientation programs for newcomers at the start of academic session. They are also informed during Mentor-Ward meetings and Parent –Teacher meetings. Our College is affiliated with Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj (RTM) Nagpur University, Nagpur and the course curricula for all faculties are designed by the University.
