Professor Iwasaki received her Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Toronto and completed her postdoctoral training with the National Institutes of Health before joining Yale’s faculty in 2000. She has received many awards and honors and has been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator since 2014. She was elected to the 1234567890():,; National Academy of Sciences in 2018, to the National Academy of Medicine in 2019 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021. Professor Iwasaki is also well known for her Twitter advocacy of women and underrepresented minorities in the science and medicine fields. I am Dr. Bob Kadlec, the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Today, I will provide background about how ASPR is partnering with the private sector to develop influenza vaccines, antivirals, and diagnostics to ensure we are as prepared for both seasonal as well as pandemic influenza. I will also provide an overview of the current challenges we face in preparedness due to dependence on active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and other raw materials manufactured in other countries. Pandemic Influenza: a Costly National Security Threat Influenza has long posed a serious threat to human health. Seasonal influenza epidemics occur every year, leading to hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and tens of thousands of deaths,1 and billions of dollars in economic loss. In the simplest of terms, the difference between seasonal influenza and a flu pandemic is that a pandemic occurs when a new flu virus emerges that humans have little or no immunity against, allowing the virus to spread easily from person to person worldwide. A pandemic influenza event could occur at any time, potentially claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. -

Child Tax Credit & Credit for Other Dependents Introduction The child tax credit is unique because if a taxpayer cannot benefit from the nonrefundable credit, the taxpayer may be able to qualify for the refundable additional child tax credit on Schedule 8812, Additional Child Tax Credit. In this chapter, we will learn about both credits and their relationship to each other. Some taxpayers may not be aware of these credits. Your time, effort, and understanding of this credit may result in a lower tax for the taxpayer. The child tax credit, credit for other dependents, and the additional child tax credit are entered on Form 1040. The intake and interview sheet, along with the Volunteer Resource Guide, Tab G, Nonrefundable Credits are critical tools needed to determine eligibility for the credit. Today we have an opportunity to put our American ingenuity and innovation to work to develop next-generation emergency response solutions, transform our supporting critical infrastructure, and strengthen our national and economic security. Our manufacturing and its supporting supply chains are not only core to our national response, but also our national and economic security. Given this, our national preparedness must receive the same attention and visibility as our national defense. During the pandemic, numerous agencies with overlapping and often duplicative authorities muddled the government’s response capability. It was evident that appropriate planning and coordination did not occur. Further, despite the existence of the Department of Homeland Security, it remains unclear which federal agency and/or department should have primary authority and accountability for national disaster preparedness and response. Clear lines of authority and communication are necessary to prepare, respond, galvanize the private sector, and create both a whole-of-government and a whole-of-nation approach. -

Even if you have never filed taxes before and have little or no income, you are likely eligible for the Child Tax Credit of 2021, which is worth up to $3,600 per child. This is a big change. You can receive regular monthly advance cash payments between July and December 2021 of up to $300 per child per month! Most families don’t have to do anything to receive their Child Tax Credit payments. If you filed taxes this year (your tax return for 2020), filed last year (your tax return for 2019), or if you signed up for Economic Impact Payments (“stimulus checks”) using the IRS’s Non-Filer tool last year, you’re all set and the IRS will automatically send you monthly payments. If you haven’t filed taxes, it’s not too late to sign up to receive this credit! Sign up using the IRS and Code for America’s new mobile-friendly website: http://getctc.org/MEJ. Using this tool will set you up to receive the Child Tax Credit, as well as any stimulus payments you are eligible for but have not received. You can also sign up directly on the IRS’ website at: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/child-tax-credit-non-filer- sign-up-tool.
