Its exposed position on the threshold between the two largest national economies in the EU, Germany and France, makes this state an important player in logistics. This, coupled with outstanding transport infrastructure, draws a multitude of companies to Saarland to set up their European hubs. Leading logistics service providers guarantee 24-hour delivery service from Saarland to most of Europe. Distinctive for this state is its connection to the multi-national SaarLorLux economic region, a well-functioning cooperative with its neighbors, France and Luxembourg. This, together with its central location, makes Saarland a virtually ideal starting point – as the “Doorway to Western Europe”. It is for this reason that many compa- nies in the logistics sector, from global players to medium-sized service providers, have chosen Saarland as their strategic base. This guide provi- des a comprehensive overview of these compa- nies. The variety of logistics services offered in Saarland is enormous; they range from carriers to coordination and management, to integrated logistics systems. Accordingly, the Logistics Guide from the Saarland Logistics Initiative reflects this variety and expertise. ffasffasffdgfggd 7 The close cooperation between economy and research in Saarland creates forward-looking synergies. Research centers such as the DFKI (German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence) or the IPL (Prof. Schmidt Institute for Production and Logistics Systems) ensure Saarland’s sustai- nability, as shown through application-oriented development. Indicative of this is the Innovative Retail Laboratory (IRL), an applied research lab from the DFKI and GLOBUS SB-Warenhaus Hol- ding where new forms of customer interaction are being developed and tested for use. Saarland research is also on the cutting edge of “intelli- gent production processes”: SemProM, a BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) pro- ject also being conducted by the DFKI, is in the process of developing digital product memory. By using integrated sensors, production relation- ships become transparent, supply chains and environmental impacts traceable. The producer benefits from the support, the consumer from the additional information. There is a lot that speaks for Saarland. In this dynamic federal state, everyone throws their talent into the pot in order to shape the future together. Saarland’s distinctive “direct lines” of communication and easy access to decision- makers in policy and administration allow for quick action, and those who decide to open their doors in Saarland benefit from the lower real estate and investment costs. Saarland is as dynamic as the logistics sector itself: we too offer customized concepts for both today and tomorrow. ffasffasffdgfggd Research and Development 8 Research and Developement Research and Development in Higher Education Institutions Research and Development Related to Higher Education Institutions Business Related Technology Transfer Research and Development Research and Development in Higher Education Institutions 9 Saarland University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Qbing Research Group Qbing Research Group Ongoing Projects With an interdisciplinary team of engineers in • Consortium member in the RAN project (RFID the fields of sensor technology, electrical engi- based Automotive Network) of the Federal neering and automation as well as economists Ministry of Economics and Technology with a logistics background, the Qbing Research • Development of a Center of Excellence for Group - managed by Prof. Dr. Steffen Hütter - integrated innovative production logistics does applied research for industry in the areas of • Value stream analyses and new conception of production, logistics and technology. This approach is based on both the use of the latest scientific methods and the application of suitable instruments of process documentation as a starting point for various optimization models such as the value stream methodology or simulation. To realize these opti- mization models, Qbing supports diverse industri- al companies not only in the actual conceptional stage but also during the implementation and onsite realization phases until the improvement is effectively embedded within the company. This ranges from production technology and cost accounting to controlling. In particular, topics on both areas are covered such as holistic production systems, production management and integrated management systems, as well as corporate management. The WIIN institute uses systematically established methods in its work, which are adapted to suit its industrial partners and their particular needs through close collaboration.
