August 12, 2018 - Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon F F A C $182,068 P!

T “F F” C . Your support is necessary to complete this essenal repair. We already have $182,068 in pledges to date and over half of that has already been fulfilled. For those who have already contributed, thank you. If you have already contributed by making a pledge please complete the form on page 8 in order to reserve your commemorave brick for the Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance.

Thanks to your generosity, we will be able to begin work on the project as soon as the contractor can schedule it. The work will take place in two phases: 1) The immediate church area and then 2) the rear parking lot when we raise the rest of the funds. This is an excing project that will greatly enhance our parish grounds in appearance and, more importantly, in safety.

I . Around the same me as the emergency repairs on the school building three years ago, I had hoped to be able to repair our parking lot. Regreably, the cost of the esmates I obtained in 2015 has risen between 10%-15%. It will never get any cheaper to repair the parking lot – the cost, now, is well over $225,000.

There was a minor repair made to the parking lot for around $6,000 two years ago to address the most damaged part. I am embarrassed to tell you that was a bad decision on my part. T . The area near the elevator and the chapel now becomes like a lake when it rains and floods in the winter and freezes over. It is not safe.

But as vital as safety is, as essenal as the Banyan School and the rental of our property is to our future, that first impression that is made when people come to our parish is not incidental. Repairing a parking lot isn’t simply a construcon issue. I , .

A parking lot that has holes, cracks and is unsafe does not present a welcoming message to parishioners and visitors alike. We want and need our facilies to be an expression of happiness and joy and welcome to that family new to the neighborhood who is looking for a Church to join. B , C. W . Now, we need to address that final exterior piece – our parking lot.

With your help, the first impression that everyone will get the moment they pull into our Church grounds is that Our Lady of the Holy Angels is a thriving, acve and welcoming Catholic faith community and the jewel of Lile Falls and star of faith in the Diocese of Paterson that we know it is.

You will recall that when we prepared to renovate the church it was said, “It will never work.” You will remember that before we built the elevator, it was said, “Impossible.” Look around at this building. Look at that elevator – how many would find it impossible to get into this church building without it. You made it happen. We will meet this challenge as well.

I have no doubt that we will make this happen. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. I $1,200 – $200.00 . T . I . I . B .

Every household that makes an investment in this campaign has the opportunity to have a brick engraved with their name, or in memory of a departed loved one, and placed at The Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance that will be placed near our bell tower – which is, by the way, the Naonal Shrine of Our Lady of the Highway. Each brick is a symbol of our faith and the reality that we all form this community with the strength of our faith built on the foundaon stone of Christ.

I . T , , H A W R. Each household that makes a pledge or a contribuon to the campaign will be able to designate a commemorave brick or memorial brick to be inscribed with their name or the names of departed loved ones. Addional bricks may be reserved at $200.00 each. Please take advantage of this opportunity to become part of the permanent history of Our Lady of the Holy Angels Parish.

Please know how grateful I am to you for your support and investment in our future. N , . Most of all, I ask for your prayers for the success of this project and for the security of our future. A

God bless you. Please know of my remembrance of you each me I stand at the altar.

I . . .

A visitor to our parish recently observed to me as I stood at the door of the church to greet people following Mass: “I have never seen so many people leave Mass early.” I had to agree. Over the me that I have been privileged to serve as pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Angels I have oen wondered why people do, in fact, leave Mass so early. At first I thought that it was because of our horrendous parking situaon. But that can’t be the reason. Even when the parking lot is half-full people leave Mass before it is through – somemes even walking past the celebrant to get to the door. On various occasions I have gingerly and with as much tact as possible asked, “Is it possible to wait unl the Mass is concluded before you leave?” The answer, invariably, “God doesn’t care – it is only important that I am here.” The response is absolutely correct insofar as it goes. But our presence at Mass is not only a maer of showing respect for God – although, of course, our worship of Almighty God is what is most important – it is also a maer of showing respect for one another.

Of course, there will be mes when a person is pressed for me, or doesn’t feel well, or just wants to move on with the day quickly and feels that they must leave Mass before it is concluded. I understand that and, frankly, during my various snts as a student or when on vacaon, I have occasionally bolted to the door before the conclusion of the final hymn. But I ask you to ask yourself, is there something really so important that I must leave Mass early every week? If the answer is “yes” well then the maer is seled. If the answer is “somemes” – that would seem to provide for an occasional early exit, but if the answer is “no” – then it might be an exercise in self-discipline to remain following Holy Communion to offer thanksgiving for the gi of the Body and Blood of the Lord that we have received in the company of others also grateful for the gi of the Eucharist.

We don’t receive Holy Communion as individuals alone – we receive the Body and Blood of the Lord in common and are built up into the Body of Christ through receiving the Eucharisc Lord – together. A moment spent in prayer following Holy Communion is an encouragement to our brothers and sisters who need the witness of our faith in order to remain faithful of the call to follow the Lord. In our fast paced society an extra moment or two in prayer can help to make us more focused on what is really important in the week ahead. Addionally, our culture really seems to need, at least in my opinion, more emphasis on mutual respect and what my grandmother, and probably yours, called “good manners.” In the ever increasing coarsening of language and culture in all forms of media it is healthy and humanizing to keep places like church sacred not only because they pertain to the things of God but because they remind us that we are all made in God’s image and so we are each deserving of the respect and the dignity that comes from that truth. I am always grateful to see anyone who comes to Mass – whether early or late – or even on the fly following Mass – and I would be even happier if I didn’t see you as a blur running down the stairs. Do we always need to be in such a hurry?

Bishop Serratelli wrote an arcle for The Beacon last year which is an excellent meditaon on church equee – it might be good food for thought as we remember that while reverence is essenally held in the heart our outward expression and manners says a great deal about what we feel inside and what we believe to be of central importance.

England’s Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for fiy-nine years. During her lifeme, she has seen eleven U.S. presidents come and go. Queen Elizabeth got along especially well with President Reagan. Once, they even went horse-back riding together at Windsor Castle. However, such familiarity did not push aside royal protocol.

In 1982, when the president and the queen were walking together, President Reagan wanted his wife, Nancy, to walk in front of them. But, according to royal protocol, the president’s wife was expected to walk behind the queen and next to the queen’s husband. Sensing the awkwardness of the situaon, the queen had them all walk together in one line.

Civil people sll observe proper equee when in the presence of the queen. When the queen enters a room, the guests stand. In greeng her, a man bows and a woman curtsies. When they first address the queen, they say, “Your Majesty,” thereaer, “Ma'am.” No one speaks unless first addressed by the queen.

Continued on Page 6... August 12, 2018 - Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5) We should not be surprised that there is a protocol in the presence of royalty. Aer all, the queen embodies in her person the Brish Commonwealth. She is the constuonal monarch of sixteen independent sovereign states. The respect shown her is the respect shown to all the people under her scepter. It is a way of acknowledging that her power and authority are at the service of the good of both her people and all.

The 15th century Council of Basel drew the comparison between the way we are expected to behave in the presence of our civil rulers and the way we should behave in presence of God. The Council stated, “A person who is about to make a request to a secular prince takes pains to compose himself and his words by decent dress, becoming gesture, regulated speech and close aenon of mind. How much more careful ought he to be in all these things when he is about to pray to almighty God in a sacred place!” Coming into the presence of God requires a proper equee on our part. Yet, we seem to be less and less aware of this in our day.

Today, a very casual atude pervades all our social interacons. Proper church equee, like all civil behavior, suffers greatly in our day. The way that we dress for church is casual. Somemes more suited for the sports field or beach! Our observance of silence is casual as well. Not infrequently people chew gum in church, keep their cell phones on and talk during the liturgy.

The way that we behave in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament has changed much in the last two generaons. Genuflecng when coming before the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle is rarely done. At funerals and weddings, as some come to receive Holy Communion, they stop and chat with others instead of approaching the Lord in prayerful recollecon. In some places, reverence to the Eucharist is withheld when the mandated rituals of purificaon of the sacred vessels aer Communion are laid aside for a more casual disposal of the fragments of the Eucharist and the remains of the Precious Blood.

To begin, when we come to church, we are not coming to just an ordinary building. We are entering a sacred place. Yes, the church is, first of all, the People of God “made one as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one and … the temple of God built with living stones, in which the Father is worshipped in spirit and in truth” (Order of the Dedicaon of a Church, ch. II, 1). Nonetheless, the church building is made holy not simply by the worshipping community, but by the very Presence of God.

“Nothing so becomes a church as silence and good order. Noise belongs to theatres…and market-places: but [in church]… there should be sllness, and quiet and calm reflecon, and a haven of much repose” (St. John Chrysostom). We are not aending a performance. We are parcipang in liturgy, the very worship of God. In church, we are most visibly before God. Even our dress should acknowledge this. As St. Cyprian once said, “The dress of the body should not discredit the good of the soul.”

Perhaps we have lost sight of the basic fact that God is Lord and we are his humble servants. He made us. He is the Creator, not us. With all our advances in science, with our technological ability to begin human life and to end human life, to manipulate and control life, we may be tempted to push God aside and place ourselves at the center of the universe.

This may explain something of our rather casual atudes and behaviors when we come into his presence. While his power and authority may seem to have been diminished in the view of some, it is not so in reality. He has placed all his goodness at the service of our redempon.

God, the Lord of all creaon, has stooped to rescue us from our sins. He has sent his only-begoen Son to be our Savior. As Paul reminds us, “Though he was in the form of God, he did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emped himself…coming in human likeness; …he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth…”(Phil 2:6-9).

When we come to church, we come to the Eucharist where this mystery of Christ’s dying and rising for us is made present. When we enter church, we are before Christ present to us in the Blessed Sacrament. Therefore, our reverence is not one of trembling or dread, cowering before a monarch whose power we fear. No! It is the hushed awe in the presence of a love too great for words. A love that inspires and lis up. A love that draws us out of ourselves into the very life of God.

The more we realize what it means to come to church, the more easily will our dress, our acons, our speech and our silence publicly witness to our faith in God who gathers us together so that “from the rising of the sun to its seng, a pure sacrifice may be offered to [his] name” (Roman Missal, Eucharisc Prayer III, third edion).

Thank you for your never failing generosity in support of our parish. Please remember that during the summer months we sll connue to rely on your support to meet our budget for the fiscal year. You are so generous but the decrease in summer collecons takes a heavy toll. We are just three weeks into the new fiscal year and already almost ten thousand dollars short in what is budgeted. Please don’t forget your parish! Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.
