DAY CELEBRATION Our 10th Annual Lei Day Celebration (i.e. May Day Program) is on THIS FRIDAY May 1, 2015 beginning at 10am. Bring mats to sit on (and your camera) and join us in the large field. Flyers with Lei Day information were distributed through the classrooms.  LEI DAY CELEBRATION KOKUA Floral and plant leaves donations needed! Bring ti leaves, loose plumeria flowers, ferns, palms, Monstera leaves, bird of paradise, ginger, heliconia to the performance area (big field/hula mound) on Friday morning, preferably before 9am. Additionally, if you find yourself with some time that morning, please head over to the performance area and see what help is needed. We usually need manpower to help decorate and prepare the area.  BREAKFAST SERVICE ENDING EARLY THIS FRIDAY Due to preparations for Lei Day, the breakfast service line will close at 7:30am on this Friday (May 1). Breakfast will not be served after 7:30am. Also, please kokua and clear the Dining Hall by 7:50am.  PARENT-COMMUNITY NETWORKING CENTER CLOSED FRIDAY The Parent-Community Networking Center (room A-3) will be closed on this Friday due to preparations for the Lei Day Celebration. Complimentary coffee and hot water will not be available on this day.  NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS ON MONDAY There will be no classes for students on May 4.  ADULT SUPERVISOR POSITION AVAILABLE We are currently seeking to hire an adult supervisor for dining room assistance and recess monitoring. This paid position requires one hour in the morning before school and one hour in the afternoon after school on school days. All students who did NOT order a May Day Student Hawaiian Plate Lunch must have a “HOME LUNCH” on this Friday (5/1.)

REGISTRATION FOR “SUMMER PLUS” (11:30am to 5:30pm) is now open to all families, you do not have to register for Summer School to register for Summer Plus.

The deadline to register and submit payment for Summer Plus is THIS FRIDAY - May 1, 2015.

THE LAST DAY OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR IS THURSDAY JUNE 4

Dismissal is at 11:30am.

NO lunch service. (There will be breakfast service.)

NO W+, NO childcare

STUDENT’S PERMANENT RELEASE Parents needing a student release at the end of the school year (because their child is not returning to Wai’alae School next school year) must make their request in writing. “Request for Student’s Permanent Release” forms are available in the Wai’alae School Office or online at www.waialae.edu (click on “Forms”). All fifth graders need to submit this form (to the Wai`alae School Office) EXCEPT for those who live in Kaimuki Middle School’s district and who WILL be attending Kaimuki Middle School for sixth grade. Please note that it takes 3 to 5 school days to complete this process. Releases will be ready for pick up (at the Office) on the last day of school (6/4/15), after 11:30am, if submitted by 5/27/15.

Families Requesting Meal Tracker Refund:

Students/families who are not returning to Wai’alae in the 2015-16 school year may request a refund of the remaining funds in their student’s Meal Tracker Account. To request a refund (or to request that the funds be transferred to another student), obtain a form from the Wai’alae School Office during office hours. Completed forms will be accepted (at the Office) until the last day of school (6/4/15). Please attach a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the request form as refund checks will be mailed. Wai`alae School Childcare and Summer Program Dates to Remember:

 Friday, May 1, 2015 - W+ Registration due for current or returning students in the W+ program. New applicants may apply at any time before next school year. Space is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis.

 Friday, May 1, 2015 – Full Payment for Summer School and Summer Plus due. Last day to register for Summer Plus (only).

 Monday, May 4, 2015 – Waiver Day. All-day childcare available.

 Friday, May 15, 2015 – Class confirmation for Summer School to be sent out to parents and posted on Bulletin Board.

 Monday, May 25, 2015 – Memorial Day. No child care.

To Get Started: 1. Parents – go to http://hi.fireupyourfeet.org 2. Click on “REGISTER” if this is the first time you are registering, click on “LOGIN” if you have registered in a previous challenge period. (You may need to change your password as the website has been updated.) If you are registering for the first time, don’t forget to select our school.

Activity Tracking: 1. Parents – once you have registered, you should be able to begin entering your family’s physical activity during this challenge period. “Physical activity” could include walking (including walking to and from school), running, bicycling, swimming, sports (e.g. soccer practice, basketball game, etc.), dancing, and more. 2. Participating schools are eligible for various awards during the challenge period (April 13 to May 15), so please continue to log in your family’s activity until May 15. Since this program began in Spring 2013, Wai`alae has received over $1,200 in cash awards !!

Families—please make note of these announcements regarding Lei Day  ON MAY 1, BREAKFAST SERVICE WILL END AT 7:30AM (EARLIER THAN USUAL.) Please clear the Dining Hall by 7:50am.  If you did not place an order for a school lunch for your child, please be sure to provide your child with a home lunch on May 1.  ADDITIONAL PARKING WILL BE AVAILABLE AT WAI`ALAE BAPTIST CHURCH FROM 8:00AM TO 12:30PM ON MAY 1. Parking on 20th Avenue will be available from 7:00am. Please do not park in front of our neighbors’ houses and yards on 19th Avenue. This area is private property.  THE PCNC (ROOM A-3) WILL BE CLOSED ON MAY 1. Complimentary coffee will NOT be available. Please purchase your coffee from the Dining Hall (available until 7:30am.)

 STUDENTS WILL BE DISMISSED AT 2:15PM ON MAY 1. This is a full instructional day, W+ will begin at dismissal. **NOTE: Families may NOT leave with their students at the end of the Lei Day Program without following school procedures for Early Release.

Thank you for your cooperation ! 10th Annual Lei Day Celebration ADDITIONAL REMINDERS:  Please apply sunscreen on your child (at home, before coming to school.)  Don’t forget your child’s Lei Day attire and lei (if applicable).  All leis, pa’u skirts/tops, sashes, hair/headpieces that are being loaned by the school are to be returned to the classroom teacher after the Lei Day program.  PARKING—You may park:

 in the Wai`alae School parking lot IN STALLS THAT ARE MARKED “VISITOR”. Do NOT park in “STAFF” parking stalls.

 on 20th Avenue from 7am to 12:30pm.

 in Waialae Baptist Church’s parking lot—enter lot from Harding Avenue. Please vacate lot by 12:30pm.

 On 19th Avenue—SCHOOL SIDE OF THE STREET ONLY—  Do NOT park in front of the neighbors’ houses and yards on 19th Avenue. This area is private property.  There will be a Photo Area that will be right up against the front of the performance area where families can move into during a grade level’s performance. Please cooperate by vacating the area when your child’s performance is done.  Bleacher seating will be available for families and friends. Mat/ ground seating only in front of the bleachers. You may bring your own chair and sit next to the bleachers or in areas on the outskirts of the student seating. NO CHAIRS IN FRONT OF THE BLEACHERS. DO NOT SIT OR STAND ON THE HULA MOUND.

Costuming

Kindergarten (Mele: Star of Gladness Hokule‘a)  All Students Attire: yellow shirt and brown/black shorts/skirt OR yellow dress (families provide)  All Students Lei: fresh plumeria lei (if the family wants to purchase) or school will provide yellow crochet lei

Grade 1 (Mele: Koa Tree)  All Students Attire: green shirt and brown shorts/skirt OR green dress (families provide)

Grade 2 (Mele: Na Pe ‘a o Hokule‘a)  Girls Attire: white tank top (families provide)  Boys Attire: blue shirt and brown shorts (families provide)  Girls Hair: ponytail or half-ponytail (if hair is too short); blue flower hairpiece (school inventory)

Join us for a fun evening watching Big Hero 6 (PG) on the school field! There is no fee to attend. Bring your own seating (lawn chairs, blankets, mats, etc...) Popcorn, hot dogs, drinks, and other movie snacks will be available for purchase (CASH ONLY!) Movie starts right after the sun sets. Friends and family welcome!
