1993-1994 England – Lineout Analysis LINEOUT ANALYSIS England 1993-1994 Introduction This Hneout analysis draws upon lineout play from three of England's games this season. In the Hght of the inclusion of Dean Richards for this game, we have looked carefully at his lineout play in the New Zealand game. We identify patterns of lineout play that have emerged during the season. Our analysis looks at: 1. Seven Man Lineout patterns 2. Defensive six Man Lineout 3. Five Man Lineouts 3.1 With3Jumpers 3.2 With5Jumpers 4. Three Man Lineouts 5. Two Man Lineouts 6. Lineouts After penalties We believe that England's lineout jumpers give clear indications of where the ball will be thrown by their posture and gestures. We do not think that the audible calls heard in Paris will be so evident at Twickenham and so we have not looked at these in detail. Brian Moore is an authoritative figure in England's Hneout play. He organises calls early and has developed a keen sense of where opponents are not responding to England's play. He relays Signals through the scrum half to the lineout jumpers. The pack to play Wales played as a pack against New Zealand. Since then Redman has played against France, Rodber against Ireland and France. The front row have played in all games this season. pr At the end of this analysis we identify some of the indicators we think the English players give about their intentions. We also draw attention to the impact the English 'step' has had on opponents' play. A videotape accompanies this analysis. 1. SevenManLineouts The English seven man lineout has tended to use Johnston at 2 and when Redman plays he does so at 4. Dean Richards stood at 6 against New Zealand. On occasions they have stacked at 2 & 3 (Johnston and Redman) or at 5 & 6 (Redman and Ojomoh) . Rodber has switched to 4 very occasionally. Martin Johnston is a key source of possession in seven man Hneouts.
