Types and additional material oí Medon Stephens are revised. 29 valid species and subspecies, including three doubtful species, are recognized in the region comprising the Western Mediterranean (including Italy and Tunisia), the Atlantic Islands, as well as Western, Central, and Northern Europe. Medon oromii sp. n. (Canary Islands: Gran Ca- naria), M. cmtricola sp. n. (Canary Islands: El Hierro), and M. kabylicus sp. n. (Algeria) are described. Medon procerus (Perez Areas, 1874) and M. sericellus (Fainnaire, 1860), previously regarded as synonyms of M. castaneus (Gravenhorst. 1802) and M. apicalis, respectively, are revalidated. A neotype is designated for Lithocharis sericella Fairmaire, 1860. Lectotypes are designated for Lithocharis oppidana Kraatz, 1857, L. picea Kraatz, 1858, Paeclerus castaneus Gravenhorst, 1802, Lithocharis africanas Fauvel, 1872, Medon bodemeyeri Bern- hauer, 1915, M. bucharicus Bernhauer, 1902, and M. ruber Sahlberg, 1908. Medon pythonissa (Saulcy, 1864) is re- garded as a subspecies of M. dilutus. All the species not treated in the first part of the revision are described and illus- trated. Bionomic and Zoogeographie data are compiled, and the distributions of most species are mapped. A key to the Medon species of the Western Mediterranean region and the Atlantic Islands is provided. Medon bucharicus Bernhauer, 1902 (Middle Asia) is redescribed and moved to Medon again (from Sunius Curtis). Some additional records of species from other regions are presented. The previously published revision of Eastern Mediterranean Medon contains several errors, which are corrected in a separate section. These corrigenda include the following synonymies: M. lydicus Bor- doni, 1980 = M. mimulus Fagel, 1970, syn. n. = M. rhodicus Franz, 1987, syn. n. = M. choparti Coiffait, 1987, syn. n. Key words. Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation.     331 Chromosome Numbers in Spanish Formicidae (Hymenoptera) IV. New data of Species from the Genera Camponotus, Formica, Lasius, Messor, and Monomorium by Pedro Lorite1, Jose A. Carrillo1, Alberto Tinaut2 and Teresa Palomeque1 ABSTRACT In this paper we report new karyological data from seven species belonging to subfamilies Formicinae and Myrmicinae. Among them we include two that are considered as endemic Iberian species, Formica frontalis and Formica subrufa. Also the chromosome number of Formica gerardi is reported. In Lasius brunneus, a variation on chromosome number probably due to the presence of B-chromosomes was detected. For two other species (Camponotus cruentatus and Messor barbarus) we found different chromosome numbers from those previously published. Also we confirm the chromosome number reported for Monomorium subopacum. INTRODUCTION Hymenoptera form one of the most distinct and well-defined insect orders and have long been perceived as a natural group. Haplo-diploidy or male haploidy is the main characteristic of the order (Crozier 1975, Gauld & Bolton 1988). Several studies have been carried about cytogenetic aspects of ants. A wide variation has been observed in relation to the chromosome number (n=1 to n=42). Karyological analysis has proved to be useful to determine the karyotypic relationship and evolution between related species (Imai 1971, Loiselle et al. 1990, Palomeque et al. 1988, 1993) as well for the establishment and characterization of new species (Imai et al. 1994). In recent years our group have performed studies in Spanish Formicidae. In relation to this, we have published several reviews of chromosome numbers (Lorite et al. 1998a, 1998b, 2000). Cytochrome Oxidase I gene of 18 species of Paederinae were sequenced and deposited in NCBI (all new to the database). The present analysis confirms the current placement of Paederini and Lathrobiini as distinct tribes. The two major subtribes of Paederini namely Paederina and Cryptobiina formed as sister clades and the members of genera Cephalochetes and Ochthephilum shared monophyly which is in congruence with their morphologic characters as both of them have synapomorphic geniculate antennae. The clustering of species was similar based on morphology and molecular data and hence the robustness of the tree is ensured for better prediction of phylogeny which clearly demonstrates the advantage of using both the data simultaneously for phylogeny. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) BERNHARD SEIFERT With 9 tables and 41 figures Abstract 33 species and one distinct subspecies of the ant subgenus Lasius s.str. are described for the Palaearctic region, including 1 7 species described as new and 8 taxa raised to species level. 1 taxa are synonymized and 12 taxa cannot be interpreted because of insufficient descriptions and unavailability of types. A total of 5050 specimens was studied and 3660 specimens were evaluated numerically giving 27 000 primary data on morphology. In the numeric analysis, the body-size-dependent variability was removed by consideration of allometric functions. The species'descriptions are supplemented by comments on differential characters and taxonomic status, by information on distribution and biology and by figures of each species. A key to the workers and comparative tables on numeric characters are provided. Zusammenfassung Eine taxonomische Revision der palaarktischen Vertreter des Ameisensubgenus Lasius s.str. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). 33 Spezies und eine distinkte Subspezies, darunter 17 neubeschriebene Spezies und 8 zum Art- niveau erhobene Taxa, werden fur den Subgenus Lasius s. str. fur die Palaarktische Region beschrieben. 1 1 Taxa werden synonymisiert und 12 Namen koimen wegen unzureichender Beschrei- bungen und des Fehlens von Typen nicht interpretiert werden. Ein Gesamtmaterial von 5050 Exem- plaren wurde untersucht, davon 3660 Exemplare mittels numerischer Merkmalsbeschreibimg, was 27 000 morphologische Primardaten ergab.
