Monmouth College MONMOUTH COLLEGE MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RECORD BOOK TEAM HISTORY Men's cross country was begun at Monmouth in the fall of 1927. The first Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference championship meet was held in 1929 and has been held annually except for the WWII years of 1941 through 1945. After Monmouth won MCAC titles in 1930 and 1931, the sport was dropped at the college but was reinstated in 1946. Monmouth won its first modern-era men’s cross country title in the fall of 1996 as a member of the merged Midwest Conference (MWC). The conference men's championship course distance was 4 miles from 1946 to 1973 and increased to 5 miles from 1974 to 1980. The present race distance of 8000 meters was established in 1981 when most courses were changed to metric distances. The conference held separate men’s and women’s championship races in 1981 and 1982 but the league meets have been held at a common site since 1983.
