Essentially two brands of garments, Shakibo and Tibo, are in high demand. They are available at almost all outlets at rates starting QR30 per metre, said Ismail. A pair of thobe made from Tibo costs QR590 and one made from Shakibo is available at QR450, he added. The cloth used for thobe plus tailoring charges is avail- able at all outlets in Souq Waqif at QR200, while the same will cost QR300 outside, Al Anzi said. Several Qataris prefer to buy complete roll of cloth which can make up to seven sets of thobes because it is expensive to buy cloth in metres. Only those people who want to make one or two dresses buy cloth in metres, he added. Shakibo and Tibo are popular brands among young Qataris; however elderly people and children prefer other brands. All shops at Souq Waqif are prepared to meet the grow- ing demand for cloth for Eid and said they have enough stocks. THE PENINSULA

Demand for tents grows 65 percent during Ramadan

DOHA: Demand for tents across Qatar has grown 65 percent during Ramadan compared to the previ- ous year, according to the UAE-based Al Baddad International, a leading provider of tents and prefab buildings globally. The increase in market activity during 2013 is attrib- uted to many factors, including an uptake in economic activity, helping attract investment and driving consumer spending across the country. Qatar’s citizens enjoy the highest income per capita in the world; its hospitality sector is growing at a fast pace with the opening of several new units; tourism activity is robust; and foreign and international companies are entering the market to tap its investment opportunities. All of these factors contributed to growth in the tents’ market. The market for tents and prefab buildings in Qatar has witnessed a huge growth over the past few years, reflect- ing the country’s robust construction and infrastructure activity and strong economic performance. Ramadan represents the peak demand period for tents compared to the rest of the year, the company said. “This is largely due to extensive private and charitable activities during the month, which normally sees a growth of 100 percent in demand.” Demand for tents in the hospitality sector was as much as 60 percent, followed by charitable, social and religious activities (20 percent) and private functions (20 per cent), the company said.
