A LETTER FROM THE UN FOUNDATION PRESIDENT Dear Partners and Friends: You are saving lives! Thank you for being a part of the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign, which provides individuals—from CEOs to youth, professional athletes to faith leaders—the opportunity to join in the global fight against malaria by sending a net and saving a life with a $10 contribution. One of the most cost-effective and simple approaches to combat malaria is through the use of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets, which can prevent malaria transmission by creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of transmissions occur. It costs $10 to buy and distribute a bed net and to educate the recipient on its use. In 2008, supporters of the Nothing But Nets campaign have saved millions of lives. With the funds raised, the life-saving bed nets distributed, the number of supporters reached, and the raised profile of malaria, 2008 proved to be a successful year for Nothing But Nets and, ultimately, the global effort to prevent malaria. Building on the momentum of what began halfway through 2006, Nothing But Nets raised nearly $25 million by the end of 2008 from over 100,000 individuals and distributed over 2 million bed nets to areas of greatest need in Africa. Nothing But Nets is linking its partners and individuals to the global movement to support the work of the United Nations to end malaria deaths by 2015. As always, these achievements could not have been possible without our unique set of partners who are helping us reach diverse communities to spread the message that malaria kills and nets save lives. -

Reaching Playoffs a Priority in Team's Second Season
Reaching playoffs a priority in team's second season http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2008/may/01/no-headline---sc1... Reaching playoffs a priority in team's second season By Joe Curley Thursday, May 1, 2008 Having set the foundation, the Ventura County Fusion looks onward and upward as it opens its second campaign Friday night. Last year's inaugural season ended one goal short of the United Soccer League's Premier Development League's postseason. The Fusion watched as its Southwest Division rivals, the Fresno Fuego, reached the national Final Four in Texas. Six original Fusion players were snapped up by Major League Soccer in the offseason, including Thousand Oaks native Chance Myers, who the Kansas City Wizards drafted first overall in the MLS Superdraft. Yet the players, coaches and front office staff seem united in a bullish outlook for the team's follow-up season. "Last year, I didn't have too many expectations for the team, despite the roster we had," said goalkeeper Logan Frank. "I didn't know how the PDL system worked and none of us had played together. "This year, I think we've set the bar higher as a team." That means playoffs or bust. "We have to make playoffs," said Frank. "Playoffs is a big thing for us, this year." "Obviously, from a team perspective, we want to be in the playoffs this year," agreed general manager Ranbir Shergill. That may seem difficult, considering who won't be back this summer. The Fusion finished 9-4-3 last season, earning 30 points from 16 matches. -
Soccer's Concussion Problem
ESPN.com: Soccer [Print without images] Wednesday, August 31, 2011 Updated: September 7, 12:03 PM ET Soccer's concussion problem By Leander Schaerlaeckens ESPN.com Case study 1: Taylor Twellman Twellman got his first concussion in his college soccer debut as a freshman University of Maryland striker. Seton Hall's goalie charged out at a loose ball and rammed Twellman in the face, breaking his nose in three places. Two years later, while with 1860 Munich, he got another concussion when he knocked heads with a defender during an exhibition game. The third came during a U.S. national team practice in 2003, when defender Danny Califf elbowed him. Later that year, Twellman had Califf to thank for the fourth concussion, when he kicked Twellman in the face during a Major League Soccer game, breaking his orbital bone, nose and jaw. He had never had post-concussion symptoms before. But this time he spent the month after the incident with a severe headache, wooziness and nausea. He got his fifth concussion in 2005. In 2008, Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin hesitated too long on a cross against Twellman's New England Revolution and had to charge out on the double. He was late to the ball and instead punched Twellman in the face. He was concussed again. This time, he had every known concussive symptom: migraines, sensitivity to light, vertigo, nausea, impaired vision, fatigue, insomnia and memory loss. Heavily medicated, he played through eight more games, scoring five times. But he felt all wrong. "Doctors would tell me I had diabetes or that I had situational depression," Twellman said. -
