BECC 2019 Grand Coulee Dam

• Constructed 1933-1942 • Largest power station in the US (by nameplate capacity) • Cost $1.8 billion in 2016 dollars

• ~8,000 people worked on the dam • Most workers came from surrounding counties, nearly all were men • Bureau of Reclamation provided housing in two cities built for the project (Government Camp and Mason City), primarily for engineers, inspectors, and other Bureau employees • 10,000-12,000 lower-wage laborers lived in more than 10 shanty towns that grew up to house both dam workers and the people who served them
