Meat dogs found alive THAI police have rescued almost 900 dogs from the dinner table in the latest seizure of canines being smuggled abroad to be eaten. On April 21, officers rescued 630 dogs from a warehouse in Mukdahan’s Wan Yai District, later finding another 250 caged dogs in a wooded area of Muang District. After receiving a tip-off that dogs’ wails could be heard com- ing from the warehouse, located on the Mekong riverbank, police found 42 cages, each containing at least 15 dogs. A basic review of facts: an 8.6-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra on April 11 promted the National Disaster Warn- ing Center (NDWC) to issue an evacuation of tsunami-risk areas. A total breakdown in mobile phone networks, coupled with a second quake and the glaring failure of the state-run media to convey timely information led to unnecessary confusion and fear. Despite the chaos, there was only one casualty: a Dutch tour- ist who died of apparent blood loss in his hotel room after refusing to seek medical treatment for a head wound received in a motor- bike accident. On April 16, the first and strongest earthquake struck in Thalang with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale. Although no evacuation was ordered, this triggered a second “unofficial” evacuation in some areas that put many people at unnecessary risk once again. Still, no loss of life was reported and property damage was relatively minor, even near the epicenter. The series of much smaller tremors that followed continued to keep people on edge. This set the perfect atmosphere for rumors of Phuket’s imminent destruction to spread virally across the internet, eventually finding their way into print in the form of leaflets distributed in Thalang (see pages 4-5). DIVE companies like Sea Bees can guarantee a lot of aspects of their trips. They can guarantee a high- quality breakfast, good equipment and knowledgeable staff, but what they cannot guarantee are those precious and glorious sightings of roaming mega-fauna, like manta rays. Every diver last week may have spotted the sweeping black wings of a manta ray in the distance or the iconic dorsal fin of a prowling shark, but even that is no assur- ance that either would be spotted the next day. On board Sea Bees’ futuristic looking and custom built catama- ran, MV Stingray, I try not to think about the mantas as we pull away from the dock and head towards Koh Bon. Koh Bon, renown for its char- ismatic mega-fauna, is part of the Similan Islands National Park, de- spite being almost 20 kilometers north of Island Nine. After a 55-minute first dive, I’m unsure of the need for a sec- ond. We had spotted ornate Blue Dragon nudibranches, a white- tipped reef shark and two manta rays.
