An Outline of the Structure of the Akha Language1 (Part 1)
Tonan Ajia Kenkyu (The Southeast Asian Studies) Vol. 8, No.1 June, 1970 1 An Outline of the Structure of the Akha Language ) (Part 1) --Introduction and Phonemics-- by Makio KATSURA* Introduction: Akhas and their Language The Akhas call themselves"Akha" (/'laka/), while other ethnic groups call them by different names. Generally the Shans both in Burma and in Thailand use the name "Kaw" (/k;);)/), and the Northern Thais, "E-kaw" (/'liik;);)/). The prefix /'lii-/ in l1iik;)JI might be the same as Ilii-I, which is often prefixed to nouns and denotes "female," such as /'liinii/, /'liinan/, /'liimtew/, etc. This is perhaps because of the eye-striking appearance of the Akha women. "Kha Kaw" C/khaa kJ;)/) is mostly used by the Laotians or the inhabitants of Laos, but the /khaa-/ is very often prefixed to the names of the minority peoples regardless of their geneological relations. The Thai Lus often call the Akhas "Kaw Ho Laem" Uk;);) hoo Ih:m/), which means "Akhas with pointed head," due to the shape of the head-dress of the Akha women. The name "O-ni" or "Wo-ni" used by the Chinese includes not only the Akhas but also many peoples belonging to the Burmese-Loloish Group.2l These names used by other peoples * {i TIIiU;ffi-~~ 1) This is a part of the report of the author's field work on the Akha language conducted in Northern Thailand in 1964-1965 under the sponsorship of the National Research Council of Thai land and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies of Kyoto University. -

Tuinzigt Route Route
Route Start Tuinzigt route 8 murals • 4km ZENK ONE Meidoornstraat 64 73 Zenk One created a tribute to kickboxing legend Ramon Dekkers. The design features boxing gloves, a Thai floral wreath and a diamond, which is a reference to his nickname ’The Diamond’. Dekkers was an eight time Muay Thai world champion and the first foreigner to be given the title of ‘Thaiboxer of the Year’. This made Dekkers a hero in Thailand. In 2013 Dekkers died unexpectedly during training. Local Tuinzigt inhabitants Ivonne Peeters and Ciska Jansen made it their mission to make this mural happen. MANTRA Tuinzigtlaan 78 This mural brings nature to Tuinzigt, with butterflies species that are nearly extinct in the Netherlands. From top to bottom you’ll see a butterfly peacock, thistle butterfly and a blue butterfly. Nearby neighbourhood Westerpark consists of streetnames named after a mix of butterflies species, which is a funny coincidence. TELMOMIEL Tuinzigtlaan 110 When Nazi Germany invades The Netherlands in 1940, mayor Van Slobbe initiates a large-scale evacuation, famously known as ’De Vlucht’ (the escape). Taking different routes, over 50.000 people from Breda leave for the South. More about the story and symbolism of the mural will follow after an official unveiling! STUDIO OCTOVIDU Magnoliastraat 74 Studio Octovidu was inspired by the story of Jan Ingenhousz. Jan Ingenhousz is probably the most famous person of Breda. He was a physician, chemicus and botanist. In 1779 Jan discovered photosynthesis by showing that light is essential to the process by which green plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. 81 ALFALFA Dijklaan 81 For this mural, of a pigeon dressed in traditional Dutch attire, AlfAlfA took inspiration from the many pigeon breeders that once lived around Dijklaan. -

Why the Western Attitude Is Important
Annu. Rey. Ennmol. 1999.41:21-50 Coptright @ 1999 b\ Annuql Reviews. All rights resened. INSECTS AS FOOD: Why the Western Attitude Is Important Gene R. DeFoliart Department of Entomology, 545 Russell Laboratories, 16 Linden Drive, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706 KEYWORDS: edible insects, entomophagy, food ecology, food insects, minilivestock, nutrition Assrnncr The traditional use of insects as food continues to be widespread in tropical and subtropical countries and to provide significant nutritional, economic and ecological benefits for rural communities. Westerners should become more aware of the fact that their bias against insects as food has an adverse impact, resulting in a gradual reduction in the use of insects without replacement of lost nutrition and other benefits. INTRODUCTION In his Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, David Livingstone (69:464) described an encounter on the banks ofthe Zouga: The Bayeiye chief Palani visiting us while eating, I gave him a piece ofbread and preserved apricots; and as he seemed to relish it much, I asked him ifhe had any food equal to that in his country. Ah,' said he, 'did you ever taste white ants? [winged termites]' As I never had, he replied 'Well if you had, you never could have desired to eat anything better.' While in Boer country, Livingstone wrote (p. 42): In travelling we sometimes suffered considerably from scarcity of meat, though not from absolute want of food. This was felt more especially by my children; and the natives, to show their sympathy, often gave them a large kind of caterpillar, which they seemed to relish; these insects could not be unwholesome, for the natives devoured them in large quantities themselves.
