Students from the Cuba City School District visited the Residential Center in late December to drop off the MANY, MANY gifts the school’s students and families collected throughout the month for the children living at Hills & Dales. All of the kids had a great time enjoying breakfast, making Christmas ornaments and singing songs together during this visit. Nicole Pollock (back row, left) is a former employee of Hills & Dales and connected the two groups for this special event.

Thank you to the Cuba City students for making Christmas an even more special time of year for everyone at Hills & Dales!

Inside This Issue FROM THe CeO ...... 2 FROM THe BOARD OF DiReCTORS ...... 3 ReCOgNiTiON –– From Wishes to Reality ...... 4-7 HillS & DAleS HAPPeNiNgS ...... 8-11 From the Chief Executive Officer

This is the first Happenings of the New Year and already so much is going on it is hard to grasp all of it. Our annual evalua - tion of our Residential Center on Davis Street by the iowa Depart - ment of inspections and Appeals came a few weeks early, but as always our staff and managers were well prepared for the visit. The three surveyors had numerous positive comments about our program, but the most important one to me and the one which best summed up their overall comments was ... “The culture here is present and evident no matter when we arrive”. To me this means that our culture to fulfill our mission is consistently present and visible day in and day out. Other comments included how the quality of the individual’s life is measured by the environment of their home, their appearance, and their involvement in their own lives. They were also extremely complimentary regarding the many different supports in place, including the qualified experts in the field of disabilities overseeing the program, and staff members Marilyn Althoff who implement plans and programs, but also who truly care CeO about the person. within a few short days of this survey team’s departure, the next group arrived to do a three year review of our HCBS (Home and Commu - nity Based Services) program. Once again we heard similar comments about our services and positive feedback on our systems and the staff who implement them. if you are connected to Hills & Dales as a client, family member, friend or stakeholder you can rest assured that we embrace our reviews as opportunities to learn and improve, but also to validate the highly regarded service we provide and the mission we uphold. in March we will have our national accreditation survey by CARF (Commission on Accredita - tion of Rehabilitative Facilities), and i believe they will also see the same culture and mission focus that the state groups have seen before them. we are also in the midst of vast, and in some cases unprecedented, system changes for people with disabilities not experienced for some time. CMS, the federal oversight agency, has announced new rules and guidance, therefore we are spending hours of time pouring over information and attending countless meetings to understand the future impact not only for Hills & Dales, but to all persons with disabilities and the aging. iowa’s new legislative session is underway and the focus on the need to reduce Medicaid spending and Human Services budgets is front and center. we appreciate the many, wonderful relationships we have with our policy makers and their desire to assure that all citizens no matter their ability are supported and have access to their community.

Have a warm and safe remainder of winter 2015!

Marilyn recently returned from Baltimore where she attended various government Relations meetings with ANCOR (American Network of Community Options and Resources). She is seen here alongside Rodney whitlock, Senior Policy Advisor to Senator Charles grassley, and Shelly Chandler, executive Director of iACP (iowa Association of Community Providers).

“Hills & Dales is dedicated to building meaningful lives for individuals with disabilities by offering services that support the whole person and enhance community inclusion.”

Above: To say that liam is an active boy, is quite the understatement. The idea for liam to join the 6th grade Roosevelt Middle School track team was brought up by liam’s mother, Jennifer (shown above running alongside him in the grass), due to his boundless energy! The suggestion was willingly accepted by Hills & Dales staff, and liam’s school, teachers, and coaches. luckily, Hills & Dales had a few runners on staff who were willing to run and encourage liam at his meet and practices throughout the fall months. This was an exciting opportunity for liam to join his fellow students in an extra-curricular activity, that he loves. liam, who has an Autism Spectrum Disorder, has called the Hills & Dales Residential Center “home” since 2013, and he definitely keeps everyone on their toes!

Above: For most people living at the Residential Center, Hills & Dales is just an extension of a much larger family unit. The staff and overall culture within the organization realize these people should not lose their sense of family and where they came from, but should always be treated like family when they are here. Here are two young ladies who were re - cently supported to remain actively engaged with their loved ones. Kelly (left picture) relished the opportunity to go home to visit her family for Christmas and is full of smiles while being flanked on both sides by people who love her. whitney (right picture) was the maid of honor at her sisters wedding in the late fall and she is shown enjoying dancing with her parents during the reception. Both of these events, and others like them, require quite a bit of planning and preparation, but maintaining a connection with family is what the Hills & Dales mission to build meaningful lives is all about! 8 Hills & Dales Happenings Hills & Dales “Happenings”

Above: Ashly and Challes, who live at the Residential Center and attend the life Training Center, show Dubuque County Supervisor wayne Demmer how to make the all-natural Bogey Tales Dog Treats through their paid-work program. wayne, along with Senator Pam Jochum, attended a legislative Session Hills & Dales hosted in September. The iowa Association of Community Providers, a statewide association of disability service providers, and Hills & Dales, collaborated to hold this session for staff, clients, and community members that focused on issues surrounding disability services and mental health for those in our community.

Left: Max, who lives independently with Hills & Dales support in the community, embraces Rick Petitgout, an employee of Bird Chevrolet. At the 2014 golf Outing, Rick won Max’s Dessert of the Month raffle drawing. each month, Max has dropped off a tasty home-made dessert at the Bird Chevrolet office for Rick and others to enjoy. Baking, and cooking are definitely passions for Max and by the look on his face in this picture you can tell he really enjoys picking out a dessert recipe, purchasing the ingredients, baking the item for Rick and connecting with him each month.

The Day Habilitation program participants volunteered to take this project on to help promote the Bogey Tales Dog Treats and created this “Dog lovers Tree” which was successfully auctioned off to support Hills & Dales.

The clients who attend the life Training Program were too busy to make the tree themselves during the latter part of 2014 baking all-natural Bogey Tales Dog Treats and breaking records for treats made in a single day for a very large Theisen's Home-Farm-Auto order. if you are looking for a gift for your special dog you can purchase them at Theisen’s (Dubuque, Maquoketa, Dewitt, Dyersville, Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids South, Cedar Rapids North, Ames, Coralville, and indianola), any Kwik Stop location in Dubuque, the Hills & Dales Community Center, The Calico Bean Market, and several other businesses.

Right: Jim Abitz, of the Dubuque Fire Department, and his family hand deliver gifts they purchased for Colin, who lives at the Residential Center, dressed as festive elves and reindeer. On Sunday, December 21st area emergency Service Professionals brought Santa and Mrs. Claus via fire truck to the Hills & Dales Residential Center to deliver gifts to the children and young adults with disabilities who are supported by Hills & Dales. The event included singing, holiday goodies, and plenty of personal visits with Santa.

Left: Vicki leonard, who volunteers countless hours to spearhead the 911 Christmas event each year, presents luke, who lives at Hills & Dales, with his Resident of Honor sweatshirt during the event. with that smile on his face it was not difficult to see that luke truly felt special that day.

10 Hills & Dales Happenings Hills & Dales “Happenings”

Above: Hills & Dales Day Habilitation clients and staff got into the holiday spirit by wearing their favorite holiday attire in late December. It is difficult to count and track all the various Christmas and holiday events that occur each year at Hills & Dales...staff caroling, potlucks, families gathering, the Annual Christmas Pageant, and so much more. It is also such a generous time of year, as Hills & Dales receives so much from those in our community...service groups, church groups, individuals, families donating to support our mission in lieu of their own gifts....truly inspiring and uplifting for everyone involved.

Left: During the Hills & Dales Childcare Center Christmas Program the 2 year old, 3 year old and 4 and 5 year old classrooms each sang Christmas songs to a packed house of about 200 attendees. each age group was proud and excited to sing their own song and came together to sing a wonderful finale to their friends and families. This festive Christmas Program, in which the children worked for many weeks rehears - ing, ended by sharing cookies and juice with their loved ones. it was definitely a proud day for everyone involved.
