Entering his third season as head coach of the Pioneers, Andreas Lindberg looks to continue to de- velop the men’s soccer team into an East Coast Con-

ference and NCAA Championship cailber program. head coach andreas lindberg Last season saw the Pioneers advacne to the ECC Championships for the second year in a row, where they were eliminated by eventual champion Dowling in a 1-1 contest that was decided by penalty kicks. C.W. Post fi nished 2010 with a 7-8-2 record. Lindberg had a standout fi rst season that included an ECCChampionship and a 12-5-2 record, along with an East Coast Conference Coach of the Year honor. 2009’s season’s success was a fi ve-win turnaround from the previous year, and saw the Pioneers advance to the championship game in the ECC tournament, defeat- ing Dowling College in penalty kicks to earn the champi- onship title. Lindberg was named the 12th coach in program his- tory in April 2009 after previously serving as head coach of the men’s soccer program at LIU-Southampton from 2002-05. Lindberg posted a cumulative 30-14-7 record during his three-year tenure at Southampton. He led the Colonials to the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in 2002 and was a runner-up in the ECAC tournament. Lindberg also assisted current C.W. Post women’s head coach, Mark Dawson, with the Southampton wom- en’s program in leading the Colonials to the second round of the 2004 NCAA Division II Championships as well as an ECAC championship. In addition to his duties as C.W. Post men’s soccer head coach, Lindberg is currently a head coach at the Met Oval Developmental Academy, a member of the USSF Developmental Academy. He has been a member of the staff since 2007 and is responsible for coaching and training top-level 15-18 year olds in the tri-state area and communicating with United States National Team scouts. Th e Hampton Bays, N.Y. resident is certifi ed by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) with an Advanced National Diploma, and also serves as the regional site director of the Farmingdale Future Stars Summer Camps, where he manages and supervises up to 1,200 kids weekly who participate in the camps. Lindberg graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Business from Southampton College in 2002, and received his MBA from C.W. PPOSTOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2011 MEN’S SOCCER PETE HULSE Assistant Coach • Th ird Season • Hofstra ‘04 Pete Hulse begins his second season as an assistant coach for the Pio- neers, bringing with him an excellent resume of coaching and playing experience. Th e Manchester, England native played for the Manchester United Centre of Excellent Youth Teams for eight years, and also played for the England ISFA capped under-16 and under-19 teams. He attended the University of Leeds in England for a year, before transferring to . While at Hofstra, Hulse served as team captain for three years, and graduated in 2004 with a degree in English and American Literature. Hulse’s most recent coaching experience includes stints at the Long Island United Academy, the New York Olympic Development Program, and the .

DAVID STAPLETON Assistant Coach • Th ird Season • Edinburg ‘99 David Stapleton, a native of Scotland, brings over 10 years of coaching experience to the staff . Stapleton graduated with a degree in Sports Studies from the Univer- sity of Edinburgh in 1999. He played collegiately for four years on the University men’s soccer First Team, and also played semi-professionally in the East of Scot- land Premier League. Stapleton currently holds his NSCAA Premier/USSF ‘B’ & NSCAA Na- tional Goalkeeping Coaching licenses, and has coached at the High School, Club & ODP levels for a number of years. Additionally, he is also a staff instructor for the LIJSL/NSCAA Coaching Academy, off ering licenses to local soccer coaches. Stapleton is a full-time director for Future Stars summer camps, and oversees year round summer camp operations on Long Island for various sports- specifi c weekly camp programs off ered in Old Westbury (Nassau) & Farmingdale (Suff olk). assistant coaches assistant CHRISTIAN ASKELAND Goalkeeper Coach • Th ird Season • Dowling ‘09 Christian Askeland begins his third season as a coach for the Pioneers, working primarily with the goalkeepers. 2011 will also mark his fi rst season dou- bling as an assistant on the women’s soccer staff , as he has served as a men’s coach since 2009. Askeland, originally from Stavanger, Norway, played for Viking FK and Randab- erg IL in Norway, but retired due to an injury and began his coaching career, taking a variety of coaching courses in his native Norway and receiving several certifi ca- tions. A 2009 graduate of Dowling College with a degree in Marketing, Askeland is currently pursuing his MBA at C.W. Post.

PPOSTOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2011 MEN’S SOCCER DUSAN ERCEG Assistant Coach • First Season • Southampton ‘00 Dusan Erceg, a former teammate of head coach Andreas Lindberg at South- ampton College, will join the Pioneer coaching staff this season. Erceg anchored the defense while playing alongside Lindberg at the former LIU-Southampton College from 1997-2000. He led the Colonials to a #2 ranking in Division II, and was named an All –American in 1999. Following his collegiate career, he played for the of the Premier Development League, where he served as the team captain and helped the Flames to a league and national championship in 2001. Th e following year, he played for the Long Island Rough Riders of the USL Division 2, and helped the Rough Rid- ers to a national championship. Th e standout player then served as an assistant coach for the Knights in the PDL in 2006, as well as the Assistant Soccer Director at the Future Starts Camp in Farmingdale.

Th ey have one daughter, Mila. assistant coaches MARK DAWON Assistant Coach • Second Season • Southampton ‘95 Mark Dawson, currently in his third season as the head coach of the C.W. Post women’s soccer team, will also assist the men’s soccer staff . Dawson joins Lindberg’s staff as the two join forces for a second go-round. Th e Mastic, N.Y. resident also served as an assistant coach with Lindberg’s Southamp- ton’s men’s soccer program from 1996-2004, helping the Colonials to the “round of eight” in an NCAA Division II Championship tournament. Ending 2009 with a 12-6-1 record, Dawson’s sqaud earned its second consecutive ECC tournament berth under his guidance, falling just short of returning to the NCAA East Regional. During his debut season at the helm of the Pioneers, Dawson guided the Pioneers to their second consecutive East Coast Conference Championship and appearance in the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional. With a record of 17-3-1, Dawson and the Pioneers tied the program record for wins, previously set during the 2007 season. For his eff orts, Dawson was selected as the 2008 ECC Coach off the Year. Since 2004, Dawson has also coached in the Eastern New York Olympic Devel- opment Program (ODP) in the Under-12 to Under-19 age groups. Dawson serves as a physical education instructor in the William Floyd School District.

Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees.

He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.

Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edi- tion, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Administration Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.

Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.

He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. Th e couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom- plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow. Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacifi c Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post.

As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, fi nancial aid, athletics, student aff airs, public safety, and buildings and grounds.

His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and fi eld research op- portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.

Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philoso- phy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: Th e Long Journey Back.” 2011 Men’s Soccer Media Guide 23 C.W.C.W. PPOSTOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2011 MEN’S SOCCER Bryan Collins, Director of Athletics Bryan Collins enters his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Collins’ leader- ship, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels of athletic performance and academics.

During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 26 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams.

Th is past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, men’s lacrosse, soft- ball all participated in NCAA tournaments.

C.W. Post boasts some of top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in na- tional polls. Th e Pioneers fi nished fi rst in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup stand- ings for 2009-10 - the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and fi eld hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Off the fi eld, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the eff orts since his arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable organiza- tions such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post student- athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service.

Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic achieve- ments in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A- Faculty program.

During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orienta- tion seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. Th e department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a brand new state-of-the art sound system for the stadi- um. In addition, all of the outdoor athletic fi elds have undergone improvements to their playing surface. Th e Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams,

athletic administration athletic received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff .

A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipi- ent of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student- athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedi- cation and spirit of self-sacrifi ce in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987.

Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their son, Tyler (16) and daughter, Megan (11).
