The vegetation of Booti Booti National Park and Yahoo Nature Reserve on the lower North Coast of New South Wales has been classified and mapped from aerial photography at a scale of 1: 25 000. The plant communities so identified are described in terms of their composition and distribution within Booti Booti NP and Yahoo NR. The plant communities are also discussed in terms of their distribution elsewhere in south-eastern Australia, with particular emphasis given to the NSW North Coast where compatible vegetation mapping has been undertaken in many additional areas. Floristic relationships are also examined by numerical analysis of full-floristics and foliage cover data for 48 sites. A comprehensive list of vascular plant taxa is presented, and significant taxa are discussed. Management issues relating to the vegetation of the reserves are outlined. In July 2013, a total of 86 full floristic and 105 rapid floristic sites were sampled across the island, based on a stratified random sampling design. A hierarchical agglomerative clustering strategy (Flexible UPGMA) and Bray-Curtis dissimilarity coefficient with default beta, along with nearest neighbour analysis to identify anomalous site allocations, was used to analyze the floristic data. In total 33 vegetation communities were delineated and mapped: 19 mapping units from the full floristic analysis; 7 variants identified within five of the above 19 groups; 3 mapping units from analysis of canopy- only floristic data; and 4 mapping units recognised in previous studies that are mapped but were not sampled in this survey. -

317 Floristics and distribution of Wattle Dry Sclerophyll Forests and Scrubs in north-eastern New South Wales John T. Email: [email protected] Abstract: Acacia blakei forests and scrubs of north-eastern NSW are described and compared to similar vegetation found in the south-east of the state, primarily dominated by Acacia silvestris. Like those in the south, Northern Wattle Dry Sclerophyll Forests form often discrete stands with abrupt margins on steep slopes in rugged terrain on shallow often rocky soils. The structure is usually of a cohort with stems of an even height and size up to 20 m tall, and a sparse understorey with few grasses, herbs or shrubs. These systems are potentially maintained by infrequent extreme fire events. Notes are made on their management and conservation. CCA08 Far North Coast Targeted Vegetation Survey Appendix 1 - Vegetation community profiles The following appendix provides a profile of each of the 62 communities delimited during the current surveys. A summary table of the equivalent ecological communities listed in each of the profiles is given in Appendix 5. Throughout this Appendix, the following abbreviations or conventions are used: NP, National Park; NR, Nature Reserve; SCA, State Conservation Area; SF, State Forest; TSR, Travelling Stock Route. Under Significant taxa, species are listed with their status under the TSC (Vulnerable, Endangered), relevant ROTAP codes, or as Rare in NSW. Under Floristics, species are arranged by decreasing summed cover abundance. The dominant species of structural layers recorded at sites are noted: E, emergent; T, tallest layer; M, mid-layer; L, lower layer; where two layers are recorded in a strata, the layers are recorded as M1 and M2 or L1 or L2; *, exotic species. Where there is no entry for groups of plants (e.g. Mistletoes, Ferns, etc.) there were no records in those groups in the sites of that community. For Number of taxa per plot, figures in parentheses are means ± standard deviation. A range of the number of taxa from lowest to highest recorded in the community is shown. The Indicator native taxa table provides the results of a fidelity analysis. Taxa with a positive diagnostic relationship to the community are listed. Positive diagnositic species are those that are more likely to be recorded in the target community than in other communities. For each taxa the median cover score and frequency % within the community and in all other sites is recorded. -

Weaver, Jr.2 and Patti J. Anderson3 INTRODUCTION: Common or vernacular names are often given to plants because of their resemblance to a familiar object. For instance, plants of the genus Campanula are known as “bellflowers” because their flowers are bell-shaped and often hang like bells. Sometimes this resemblance is to another plant, so Liriodendron species are called “tulip trees” because their large and colorful flowers are reminiscent of the familiar garden tulips. So it is with jasmines. The genus Jasminum, of the Oleaceae or olive family, contains over 200 species of vines or shrubs with opposite leaves, many with fragrant flowers, native to the warmer parts of the Old orldW (Huxley 1992). The name “jasmine” or “jessamine” is derived from the Arabic and Persian “yasmin” or “yasa- man” and probably originally referred to the species we now know as the Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac (L.) Ait). This plant, with its extremely fragrant flowers, is native to southern Asia, but it has been cultivated in the Middle East for centuries (Green 1965). The Jasminum species are the “true” jasmines, but eventually many plants with fragrant flowers in other genera came to be known by this same common name.To date, there are 29 plants in 12 different families known as jasmines, in addition to the Jasminum species. This circu- lar includes descriptions of a selection of these horticulturally important species. -
