    ABSTRACT THE FEAR OF THE KNOWN: HORROR MEDIA AND THE USE OF FEAR TO MAINTAIN POWER Dana Peterson, MA. Department of Sociology Northern Illinois University, 2018 Diane Rodgers, Director A new subgenre has begun emerging in the horror genre: “woke horror.” Texts within this subgenre reflect the increased awareness of injustices against minority groups in American society. Prior research on horror has long connected the fears presented onscreen with real-life social anxieties of the time. Utilizing an intersectional framework that is concerned with racial, gender, and sexual orientation minorities, I engaged in a discourse analysis of three woke horror texts from 2017: American Horror Story: Cult, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Get Out. Through multiple rounds of coding, I was able to uncover a variety of themes that distinguish who holds the power in these horror texts, who is subordinate, and how the new fears of the woke horror genre are used to control groups within the texts. The codes also revealed who in these texts are able to be the saviors of the rest of the subordinate group. The present study offers an important update to the literature on horror, both in the continuation of the connections between on-screen fears and real life, as well as an introduction to what is sure to continue to be a growing subgenre. THE WORLD OF THE SERIES: In a ‘near future’ the world has experienced a dramatic plunge in human fertility rates. The cause is never specified in the series, but strong allusions are made to environmental degradation, pollution, and the lascivious morals that this new regime, a religious theocracy known as GILEAD, arose to stamp out. Under the guise of moral imperatives, this ‘Army of God’ slaughtered the U.S. Congress and took over the majority of the country, which they hold with military force and an every present army of black-clad soldiers and spies. Case Study: The Handmaid’s Tale - Gibbs - page !1 of !10 Whether or not its religious beliefs are genuine, the army of Gilead has a decidedly Fascist tone. Through a network of spies and civilian collaborators (known as ‘eyes’) they arrest and make ‘disappear’ any who speaks against them.

Tell me if this sounds familiar: you’re chatting with friends, family members, maybe complete strangers and the subject of professions pops up. They ask you what you do for a living, and you reply with, “I’m an archivist.” Their response, “Oh, like in Indiana Jones?” Now, there are a few ways to handle this situation. One, flip every table you can find and drop to your knees shouting at superhero-level “NO!” before setting fire to an expensive coat and leaving a you-shaped Bugs Bunny-esque hole in the wall as you disappear into the wilderness. Two, internalize their ignorance and drive it deep down into the void that was once your soul before everyone started making that same statement. Or three, take the more contemplative approach and explain what an archivist is and why the comparison to Indiana Jones isn’t accurate. I’d recommend the third option, mainly because it’s less psychologically damaging and you’re less likely to be arrested for property damage. But to each their own. Kidding aside, the truth of the matter is that I’ve gotten the Indiana Jones remark more times than I can count, which led me to wonder why that reference is so prevalent. Is it because archaeologist, Indy’s actual profession in the films, and archivist contain the same arch- root word? For the record, archive comes from the Greek arkheia meaning “public records,” which stems from arkhē meaning “government” while archaeology stems from the Greek arkhaios meaning “ancient.”1 Or, is it a genuine misconception due to the fact that the closing scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark is the only pop culture frame of reference most people have of archives? From what I can tell, it’s a combination of the two.
