April 2020 Newsletter APRIL 2020 NEWSLETTER OFFICE HOURS The Golden Spread Council Office and Scout Shop are open: Monday thru Friday 8:30—5:30 OFFICE CLOSURES The Golden Spread Council will be closed for the following holidays in 2020*: New Year’s Day; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; President’s Day; Good Friday; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Thanksgiving Day and the day after; Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; New Year’s Eve *As a rule we follow AISD school closures in case of a snow/ice event. Additionally, the Scout Shop will be open the following Saturdays in 2020: January 11; February 22; March 21; April 18; May 16; June 20; September 12, 19 & 26; October 3 & 10; November 14 Be sure to check out our website calendar for ALL of the exciting events happening in the Golden Spread Council or follow this link: https://goldenspread.org/ 1 SCOUT EXECUTIVE’S BLOG MEET OUR NEW EXECUTIVE Please join us as we congratulate Brian Tobler, who began serving as Scout executive of the Golden Spread Council in Amarillo, Texas, effective November 1, 2019. Brian began his Scouting career as a district executive at the Heart of America Council in Kansas City, Missouri. He moved on to become a senior district executive, district director, and later assistant director of field service of the council before being promoted to director of field service of the Denver Area Council in Denver, Colorado. Brian is an Eagle Scout who enjoys watching, playing and coaching sports and spending time with his family. Brian and his wife, Laurie, have four children. Many of our fantastic volunteers have been able to meet Brian through his fireside chats already and have been able to ask the hard questions facing the Boy Scouts today; however we ask that you please join the staff in helping us send Brian our well wishes as he joins in partnership with the volunteers and staff of the Golden Spread Council to deliver quality Scouting experiences to the young people of the communities they serve within the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandles. Look for Brian to share thoughts, experiences and good practices for Scouting in his blog each month! 2 COUNCIL EVENTS EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to the inaugural return of the newsletter for the Golden Spread Council! You, the volunteer, have spoken about getting information out in a timely and efficient manner that you can look at and see what is coming up in council and district events. We also want you as volunteers to send in pictures of your events for the newsletter and let us know what is coming up with your units! Let us hear from you! Now, the Council is asking for your help because we want you to design the name header of the newsletter—it’s pretty generic on this edition; however, we are inviting volunteers to give your thoughts because, well, it is YOUR newsletter! The newsletter will be going out every month and will contain the most current information available for council, district, and unit events. Please send unit event information, dates and pictures to Gemma Mitchell at [email protected] or call 806-282-8296 and leave me a voicemail. We are really excited to get this newsletter out to you again and we are even more excited to include you and your youth! The youth of the Golden Spread Council is why we all do what we do in Scouting and when we stay focused on them, we all win! Please check with your unit leader for details on how to register for these events as some are unit registrations and others may be individual registrations. We also put a lot of information about upcoming events and news on this page. 4 COUNCIL EVENTS **Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic Scouting for Food has been postponed. Look for information to come in the future about this amazing event!** The annual Scouting for Food Drive is on March 28, 2020! You can pick up bags from District Roundtables in February and March in order to be ready for this community event! The High Plains Food Bank is always ready for Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA as well as Venturers to come and bring the food that they have gathered for those in the community that may be hungry! There will also be food barrels at the scout office for those that want to bring food by to drop off before the drive begins! Thank you for your continued support of the Golden Spread Council! We appreciate all of our volunteers! 5 COUNCIL EVENTS IT’S TIME FOR RE-CHARTERS! It is time for all units to get their re-charter paperwork done and turned in! The Council deadline for all units was February 10. All re-charters are due by February 28th! If you have not completed your unit recharter, you will not be registered, insured, cannot earn advancements and will not be able to attend any activities or camps. Please get your recharter done quickly! Don’t forget that fees are now $60.00 for youth, $36.00 for adults and the charter fees are now $60.00. If you are in need of fee assistance, the council has set up an assistance fund for those that will need help this year. Please contact Stephen Keel at 806-350-6639 for more information about the assistance fund. We are always available to help assist you in the re-charter process. If you have questions, please contact us and we will be happy to answer them for you! CAMP CARDS 2020 **Due to the coronavirus pandemic the sale of Camp Cards has been extended to an undetermined date.** It’s also Camp Card Time! Please go to goldenspread.org and get your unit signed up for Camp Cards. Camp Card Kickoff is March 5 and you don’t want to miss this easy opportunity to raise money for summer camp! If you aren’t sure how much you sold in 2019; contact your district executive and he/she will have that information for you. This is another great fundraiser that will help your youth have a great scouting experience! Oh, the stories that can come out of summer camp and be told for years to come so don’t delay; get signed up today! 6 COUNCILCOUNCIL EVENTSEVENTS CAMPOREE IS HERE! CAMPOREE IS HERE!** **Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Camporee has been postponed. Look for more rescheduling information to come at a later date!** It’s time for the annual Golden Spread Council Scouts BSA Camporee at Camp Don Harrington from April 24 - April 26! The leader guide and registration link have not opened yet but be sure to check our website every week so that you can get your unit signed up and not miss this amazing and fun weekend of friendly “competition” in the Scouting spirit! This document has been compiled from informa- tion furnished by the various Boy Scout Councils in Texas as well as from various other sources. The document is intended to be used as a guide. No claim is made as to the accuracy of the data printed herin. Most campsites require that reservations be made in advance, and at that time you should check to see that there has been no change since the publication of this document. Units using any camp should be prepared to follow the outdoor code for the dura- tion of their visit -- it is a sure way of being asked to return.     Summary of Sexual Abuse Claims in Chapter 11 Cases of Boy Scouts of America There are approximately 101,135sexual abuse claims filed. Of those claims, the Tort Claimants’ Committee estimates that there are approximately 83,807 unique claims if the amended and superseded and multiple claims filed on account of the same survivor are removed. The summary of sexual abuse claims below uses the set of 83,807 of claim for purposes of claims summary below.1 The Tort Claimants’ Committee has broken down the sexual abuse claims in various categories for the purpose of disclosing where and when the sexual abuse claims arose and the identity of certain of the parties that are implicated in the alleged sexual abuse. Attached hereto as Exhibit 1 is a chart that shows the sexual abuse claims broken down by the year in which they first arose. Please note that there approximately 10,500 claims did not provide a date for when the sexual abuse occurred. As a result, those claims have not been assigned a year in which the abuse first arose. Attached hereto as Exhibit 2 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the state or jurisdiction in which they arose. Please note there are approximately 7,186 claims that did not provide a location of abuse. Those claims are reflected by YY or ZZ in the codes used to identify the applicable state or jurisdiction. Those claims have not been assigned a state or other jurisdiction. Attached hereto as Exhibit 3 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the Local Council implicated in the sexual abuse.

    Golden Spread Council Boy Scouts of America National Youth Leadership Training Sunday June 3 – Friday June 8, 2018 Camp MK Brown, Mobeetie, Texas What is it? The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) 6-day program integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the scouting experience to train young men and women to better serve their units when placed in leadership positions. Youth registered with the Boy Scouts of America, are at least 13 years of age (and have completed the eight grade), have earned the rank of First Class (Boy Scouts only), and have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops or Crews, are eligible to participate. Here's a brief outline of what Scouts can expect to accomplish during this training: Day One: Communicating Well, Part I; Finding Your Vision, Part I. Day Two: Setting Your Goals; Preparing Your Plans. Day Three: Forming Your Team; Problem Solving; Leading EDGE Day Four: Teaching EDGE; Resolving Conflicts; Making Ethical Decisions. Day Five: Leading Yourself; Valuing People. Day Six: Finding Your Vision, Part II; Communicating Well, Part II; Creating A Future. Why? Leadership experiences can be frustrating and disappointing for a youth who lack the knowledge, skills and encouragement to fulfill their assignment. During NYLT, participants discover that leading themselves and others requires a vision--a picture of future success. Through presentations and positive experiences in goal setting, planning, and problem solving, participants learn how to set a clear course toward realizing their team and individual visions, and then how to visualize themselves in the center of those pictures of future success.
