Current Collector for Heavy Vehicles on Electrified Roads: Field Tests
Journal of Asian Electric Vehicles, Volume 14, Number 1, June 2016 Current Collector for Heavy Vehicles on Electrified Roads: Field Tests Mohamad Aldammad 1, Anani Ananiev 2, and Ivan Kalaykov 3 1 Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems, Örebro University, [email protected] 2 Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems, Örebro University, [email protected] 3 Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems, Örebro University, [email protected] Abstract We present the field tests and measurements performed on a novel current collector manipulator to be mounted beneath a heavy vehicle to collect electric power from road embedded power lines. We describe the concept of the Electric Road System (ERS) test track being used and give an overview of the test vehicle for testing the cur- rent collection. The emphasis is on the field tests and measurements to evaluate both the vertical accelerations that the manipulator’s end-effector is subject to during operation and the performance of the detection and tracking of the power line. Keywords current collector, electrified road, hybrid electric vehi- cle, electric road system, field test 1. INTRODUCTION The tendency to replace the fossil fuels used by vehi- cles with electrical energy nowadays is clearly identi- fied worldwide. While the solution of storing electrical energy in batteries for small vehicles seems to be rela- tively effective, large vehicles like trucks and buses require a non-realistic large amount of batteries when driving to distant destinations. Therefore, transfer- ring electricity continuously to vehicles while driving Fig. 1 The developed current collector prototype, seems to be the solution [Ranch, 2010] by equipping taken from Aldammad et al. -
The Connected Train
ascent Thought leadership from Atos white paper The Connected Train Your business technologists. Powering progress All around the world Atos is bringing connectivity to places where it has never been envisaged, delivering benefit to both business and user. We make sure that people have access to the right information no matter what their activity or context. Global rail is a major research area led by our experience in the UK where we have significant heritage and ‘on the ground’ vision. With travelers, operators and nation states demanding high bandwidth to improve passenger experience and drive business efficiencies we are defining a new economic and technical model that gives passengers free WiFi without the rail industry carrying operational cost. Furthermore we are focused on the true business benefit to all parties in the rail industry; revenue and margin drivers are at the core of our proposition. This paper outlines a blueprint for this service called The Connected Train. We examine the nature of the proposition by posing and answering a number of questions. Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) Fact Sheet February 2016
Oasis Rail Transit Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) Fact Sheet February 2016 Approximately 17 miles in length, the proposed Oasis Rail Transit corridor extends between downtown Cincinnati and the City of Milford and would initially be served by seven stations. In addition to providing a new rail-based regional transportation option serving Eastern Corridor communities, the Oasis line would also offer new opportunities for community enhancement and development. PREFERRED RAIL VEHICLE TYPE: DMU One of the most prominent features considered for the Oasis line is the actual rail vehicle (or train) that would transport passengers to their destinations. Early studies completed for the Eastern Corridor Program recommended that self-propelled passenger coaches be considered as the preferred rail vehicle type. Further studies explored in more detail the technologies available for the line including: • Diesel-powered locomotives pulling single or bi-level passenger coaches • Electrically-powered streetcar-type vehicles • Electrically-powered light rail vehicles call Electric Multiple Units (EMU/LRT) • Diesel-powered passenger cars (Diesel Multiple Units or DMUs) The results of those studies confirmed that diesel-powered passenger cars, or DMUs, would be the most appropriate technology for the Oasis Rail Transit line. Features of DMUs that made it stand out beyond other rail vehicle choices included: • DMUs are flexible in terms of operational capabilities and can efficiently serve the 17-mile Oasis corridor – which is too short for traditional “push-pull” locomotives and coach cars but More information about rail generally too long for streetcar-type vehicles – and efficiently vehicles is available in the Oasis manage the spacing between stations. -
