Oriole Beach Elementary students are Reviving Deadman’s Island Whoever said learning is no day at the beach was not a student at Oriole Beach Elementary. On Thursday, May 10, 152 students went to Deadman’s Island to learn why this historic slip of land needs protection from erosion. They helped to plant deep- rooted sea oats that will hold the Protecting vulnerable sand in place. shoreline is hard work, but it is better than a day in Heather Reed, a scientist who works to protect Deadman’s Island, said, the classroom. “Our dunes not only provide protection to the marsh, but hurricane pro- tection, as well. The plant mesh we use will catch sand and hold the plants along the slope. It is a multi-phase project because it takes a while for dunes to build. We also planted shoreline plants and learned their impor- tance in protecting our coastal shorelines.” A grant by National Fish and Wildlife Foundation funded the plants, and Teen Socialize With Education coordinated the event. OBE teachers and parents, along with staff from Teen Socialize With Education that included Ric Moore, Kondra Osbourne and Michelle Larue, helped with the event. “Marine biology isn’t just about understanding dolphins and tur- tles but the entire coastal ecosystem and how to protect marine and terrestrial environments,” Reed said.

This plant will defend Deadman’s Island against erosion.

Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News Last dance Reagan Raley (14) is consoled by mother DeeDee and sister Mary Catherine Rehm, while Kamryn Hearn (22) is comforted by mother Carina after the Lady Dolphins’ 9-0 loss. Softball season ends with regional semi loss Continue from Page 1C» The Lady Jags got a leadoff triple from Amanda Klemm to lead off the game. But Elle Branton was able to work out of the jam, getting a pop out and a pair of strikeouts. Branton struck out five in the game but also walked six. GBHS went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first before the Lady Jags took a 3-0 lead in the second. With a runner at first with an out, West Florida’s Keyana Norman hit a ball to left. Kamryn Hearn tried to make a diving catch, but the ball got past her to make it 1-0. Klemm followed with a two- out, two-run single to make it 3-0. Jeya Prasad, who struck out seven and walked only one, gave up the first of her two hits to Taylor Baker in the second. The long single missed being a home run by just a few feet. Cali Hargrove ran for the catcher Baker, getting to second Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News on a Hearn groundout, but was Even in defeat stranded there. The Lady Dolphins hold their traditional post-game prayer with West Florida players after GBHS’ 9-0 loss in the regional semifinals. One of Branton’s six walks, a leadoff pass to Kenzi Wiley, was followed by a two-run homer by Mackenzee McBride. McBride went 2-for-5 with six RBIs in the game. After GBHS went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third, McBride popped out with two on (both reached on two-out walks) to end the top of the fourth. The Lady Jags had runners on the corners with nobody out in the fifth (double, fielding error), but Branton got a pop out, a fielder’s choice (with a runner thrown out at home) and a fly out to end the inning. Elle Branton’s two-out single in the bottom of the fifth would eventually be the only other hit the Lady Dolphins would get. A leadoff single and two more walks from Branton were followed by a towering fly ball to left by McBride. The ball went over the foul pole and, after a few seconds’ delay, was ruled to be a grand slam. Reagan Raley drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News but GBHS couldn’t score. Last week’s regional semifinal loss was the final game for (from left) Delaney Batte, Erin Bailey, Alex Branton and five other seniors.
