JOHNSON IN DIALOGUE By Alison Downie May 2009 Dissertation Supervised by Dr. Anne M. Clifford, CSJ Rita Nakashima Brock’s Journeys by Heart: A Christology of Erotic Power and Elizabeth A. Johnson’s Friends of God and Prophets: A Feminist Theological Reading of the Communion of Saints offer resources for reflecting upon what redemptive community is, how it functions, and how women, in particular, experience redemption. With deep roots in Trinitarian creation theology and a strong trunk of feminist theological anthropology, the branches of Christian feminist reconstructionist theology produce rich soteriological fruits. Without rootedness in creation theology, theological anthropology is anthropocentric, not sufficiently holistic or ecologically aware. Similarly, without development of a feminist theological anthropology, soteriology inevitably reflects the distortions of patriarchal perspectives embedded in anthropological themes intertwined with soteriology, such as the imago dei, sin, and grace. iv Rita Nakashima Brock’s Journeys by Heart understands both woundedness and healing as relational phenomena. Her interpersonal and process orientation can benefit from dialogue with systematic categories. Her analysis of heart and the relational power of Eros to heal have deep resonance with the systematic theological categories of imago dei and pnuematology. Elizabeth A. Johnson’s Friends of God and Prophets reconstructs the symbol of the communion of saints for a contemporary North American faith. In her hands, this symbol functions as an inclusive, relational, dynamic image of redeeming community, offering a Christian symbol and language for a reality not limited to one faith. Despite the differences between Brock and Johnson, in these particular texts, each of them offer evocative insight and language which can dialogue together in the ongoing task of articulating what the word “redemption” means in the particularities of women’s lives and in theological discourse. v DEDICATION This dissertation is dedicated to my advisor and mentor Dr. Anne M. Knoll Abstract Feminist Disability Studies: Theoretical Debates, Activism, Identity Politics & Coalition Building Kristina R. Knoll Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Angela Ginorio Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies Department Through two intellectual and activist spaces that are fraught with identity politics, people from feminist and disability studies circles have converged in unique ways that have assisted in addressing the gaps in their respective fields. Although not all feminist disability studies scholars are comfortable with defining feminist disability studies or having an established doctrine that sets the field apart, my eleven interviews with people whose work spans feminist and disability studies demonstrates a presence of, and the need for, a feminist disability studies area of study. Utilizing feminist and disability studies literature and reflections by the participants, I argue that feminist disability studies engages with theories that may be contradictory and incomplete. This process has the potential to reveal power, privilege, and oppression, and therefore, it can provide opportunities for liberation. Methods in feminist disability studies emphasize the necessity of considering both disability studies and feminist perspectives while resisting essentialism in order to allow new identities to surface. In addition, feminist disability studies addresses why activism must be made accessible in order to fight ableism and to support work across identity-based groups.

This God created human beings in His image to live joyfully in His presence, in humble submission to His gracious authority. But all of us have rebelled against God and, in consequence, must suffer the punishment of our rebellion: physical death and the wrath of God. Thankfully, God initiated a rescue plan, which began with His choosing the nation of Israel to display His glory in a fallen world. The Bible describes how God acted mightily on Israel’s behalf, rescuing His people from slavery and then giving them His holy law. But God’s people—like all of us—failed to rightly reflect the glory of God. Then, in the fullness of time, in the Person of Jesus Christ, God Himself came to renew the world and restore His people. Jesus perfectly obeyed the law given to Israel. Though innocent, He suffered the consequences of human rebellion by His death on a cross. But three days later, God raised Him from the dead. Now the church of Jesus Christ has been commissioned by God to take the news of Christ’s work to the world. Empowered by God’s Spirit, the church calls all people everywhere to repent of sin and to trust in Christ alone for our forgiveness. Repentance and faith restores our relationship with God and results in a life of ongoing transformation.

This study analyzes how it is marketed at Oasis Church in Hollywood, California, Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, and Victory Family Church in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. The dissertation examines how these churches market Prosperity Theology online and offline to determine the themes and emphases of their messages, whether the content changes based on the audience, if the audience is affecting the presentation of the message, and, if so, in what ways. Included in this investigation is rhetorical analysis of the sermons, websites, and Twitter posts of the pastors to determine themes that emerge in their presentations.
