The initial objective was the discovery cf primary materials from the period to fill a gap in the history of American educational thought and practice. Extensive searching cf unpublished and uncatalogued library holdings, mainly those of major public and university libraries, yielded a significant quantity of primary documents for this bibliography. The historical and contemporary works, comprising approximately 4,500 primary and secondary educational resources with some surveying the cultural setting of educational thinking in this period, are organized around 26 topics and 109 subtopics with cross-references. Among the educational issues covered by the cited materials are: public vs. private; coed vs. separate; academic freedom, teacher education; teaching and learning theory; and, equality of educational opportunity. In addition to historical surveys and other secondary materials, primary documents include: government documents, books, journals, newspapers, and speeches. The “Human Factor” in Scientific Management: Between Ethics, Scientific Psychology and Common Sense Riccardo Giorgio Zuffo University “G. d’Annunzio” of Chieti Approximately one hundred years after the historical insights of Adam Smith on the division of labor (1776) as a determining factor in value creation (Taylor, 1911), the first conceptions of modern industry and what would come to be known as Scientific Management were born. The incubation period had been long. But, in 1879, Taylor, at twenty-three, was hired at the Midvale Steel Company where he progressively deduced and outlined those principles, models, and ideologies that would go on to influence production and the way to “live” their work, and reconfigure their daily life for an entire century. Now, a century later, life is full of great promise and many changes and by rereading Taylor’s works contextually to the “Progressive Era” (Gould, 2000), they assume the paradigmatic value of a broader debate (Nelson, 1975, 1980), concerning what extent his work and action can be in some way rediscovered and focalized. With Taylor, work had evolved in a way so as to permit the social and economic emancipation of millions of men. However, in order to fully understand Taylor’s centrality for work it is necessary to first overcome the personal and the ideological dimensions that have made Taylorism both a symbol of labor’s oppression, and a beacon of mankind’s well-being. The history and chronicle of the 20th century has considered Taylor in many ways an engineer, a technocrat, a rationalist, a great hero and benefactor of humanity, an emblem of ferocious capitalism and of the modern factory’s alienation. -

Mathew Carey's American Museum, 17891 Philadelphia's technological and scientific community founded the Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania during the 1820s in response to the emergence of industrialization and to the rise of experimental physical science. These momentous events re- leased energies carrying the organization through crucial phases in the development of the nation. Because the Institute's one-hundred- and-fifty-plus-years parallel the making of the industrial order in America, its work exposes the shifting contours of technological and scientific activity in the culture. In the nineteenth century, the Institute's scientific work reflected first the experimental tradition and then the rise of university-trained engineers and engineering knowledge refined by mathematics and industrial necessity. In our own century, the Franklin Institute has created both a basic science research institution in the tradition of England's Cavendish Labora- tory and an applied science research laboratory serving military, governmental, and industrial needs. The society began its work in 1824 with men like Samuel Vaughan Merrick, a manufacturer; William H. Keating, a professor of min- eralogical chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania; and Mathew 1. Art and Industry in Philadelphia: Origins of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, 1848 to 1876 o A TWENTIETH-CENTURY PHILADELPHIAN, Moore College of Art and Design seems a permanent fixture on the city's cultural Tlandscape. Now on Logan Square with the even more venerable Franklin Institute and Academy of Natural Sciences, from 1880 to 1959 Moore occupied an imposing building at Broad and Master Streets, north of City Hall. Originally known as the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, it began in 1848 as a charitable effort to train "needy and deserving" young women in textile and wallpaper design, wood engraving, and other salable artistic skills. During the 1850s, governance passed from the woman founder to men of the city's financial and manufacturing elite. Curriculum and policies frequently reflected both conflict and com- promise among the differing goals of managers, faculty, and students. By 1919 the school claimed thousands of alumnae. After its merger in 1932 with the Moore Institute of Art, Science, and Industry, this experiment in vocational art training continued to flourish as a women's college dedicated to commercial art, in an era when many other single-sex institutions foundered under the impact of changing attitudes towards coeducation.1 This article is drawn from a dissertation in progress, a detailed narrative of the school's early years appeared in the author's M A thesis, "The Philadelphia School of Design for Women, 1848 to 1876" (University of Delaware, 1989) In partial return for numerous intellectual -

Frederick W Taylor Born in 1856 to a wealthy Quaker family in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Frederick Winslow Taylor was an American inventor and engineer and one of the very first management consultants. In the twentieth century his system of industrial management spread throughout the industrialised world and he became known as the father of scientific management. Whilst his work pre-dated the concepts of Total Quality and focus on the customer that flourished in the mid to late twentieth century, nevertheless his methods were probably the very first attempts at systematic process measurement and improvement and in this sense were a forerunner of quality management principles. Frederick W Taylor had to give up law school at an early age due to his rapidly deteriorating eyesight, and so he went into industry in 1878 as a machine shop worker at Midvale Steel Company, Philadelphia. Here he worked his way up to chief engineer and obtained a degree in mechanical engineering by correspondence course. In 1881, while still chief engineer at Midvale Steel, he introduced a scientific approach to "time and motion study", which he later extended and refined at the Bethlehem Steel Company, when, in 1899, he was asked to apply his scientific management ideas there.During these studies, Taylor and his associates used stop- watches to time the labourers as they performed various tasks, counted the number of shovel-loads they each moved, and the load per shovel. Thus he was able to determine an optimum shovel size and length and optimum shovel load.
