DIAS 1Centro de Investigaciones en Ecosistemas (CIECo), Universidad Nacional Auto´noma de Me´xico, Morelia, Michoaca´n, Me´xico 2Instituto de Neuroetologı´a, Universidad Veracruzana, Xalapa, Me´xico We examined the literature on the effects of habitat fragmentation and disturbance on howler monkeys (genus Alouatta) to (1) identify different threats that may affect howlers in fragmented landscapes; (2) review specific predictions developed in fragmentation theory and (3) identify the empirical evidence supporting these predictions. Although howlers are known for their ability to persist in both conserved and disturbed conditions, we found evidence that they are negatively affected by high levels of habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation. Patch size appears to be the main factor constraining populations in fragmented habitats, probably because patch size is positively related to food availability, and negatively related to anthropogenic pressures, physiological stress and parasite loads. Patch isolation is not a strong predictor of either patch occupancy or population size in howlers, a result that may be related to the ability of howlers to move among forest patches. Thus, we propose that it is probable that habitat loss has larger consistent negative effects on howler populations than habitat fragmentation per se. In general, food availability decreases with patch size, not only due to habitat loss, but also because the density of big trees, plant species richness and howlers’ home range size are lower in smaller patches, where howlers’ population densities are commonly higher. However, it is unclear which vegetation attributes have the biggest influence on howler populations. Similarly, our knowledge is still limited concerning the effects of postfragmentation threats (e.g. hunting and logging) on howlers living in forest patches, and how several endogenous threats (e.g. genetic diversity, physiological stress, and parasitism) affect the distribution, population structure and persistence of howlers. More long-term studies with comparable methods are necessary to quantify some of the patterns discussed in this review, and determine through meta-analyses whether there are significant inter-specific differences in species’ responses to habitat loss and fragmentation. Ferrari2, Maria Paula Cruz Schneider2 and Morris Goodman1 ABSTRACT The genus Alouatta (howler monkeys) is the most widely distributed of New World primates, and has been arranged in three species groups: the Central American Alouatta palliata group and the South American Alouatta seniculus and Alouatta caraya groups. While the latter is monotypic, the A. seniculus group encompasses at least three species (A. seniculus, A. belzebul and A. fusca). In the present study, approximately 600 base pairs of the γ1-globin pseudogene were sequenced in the four Brazilian species (A. seniculus, A. belzebul, A. fusca and A. caraya). Maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods yielded phylogenetic trees with the same arrangement: {A. caraya [A. seniculus (A. fusca, A. belzebul)]}. The most parsimoni- ous tree had bootstrap values greater than 82% for all groupings, and strength of grouping values of at least 2, supporting the sister clade of A. fusca and A. belzebul. The study also confirmed the presence of a 150-base pair Alu insertion element and a 1.8-kb deletion in the γ1-globin pseudogene in A. fusca, features found previously in the remaining three species. The cladistic classification based on molecular data agrees with those of morphological studies, with the monospecific A. caraya group being clearly differentiated from the A. seniculus group. Male parental behavior was observed in black howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata pigra) in Belize and Guatemala from December 1978 to March 1979, with the objective of relating parental behavior to the prevailing monogamous group structure. The results revealed that male parental behavior in Alouatta palliatapigra agrees in some respects with reports from the literature on polygamous and polygynous species of Alouatta, while in other respects the situation more closely resembles that in monogamous species of non-human primates. Considerable inter-individual varia- bility in male-infant interactions prevailed among the study groups. Male parental behavior in the Belize groups became more prominent with increasing age of an infant. INTRODUCTION Male parental behavior has not been well documented for any species of non-human pri- mates, mainly because species that exhibit the greatest amount of this type of behavior are forest dwellers, the study of which is considerably more difficult than that of terrestrial pri- mates (REDICAN, 1976). Male participation in the rearing of the offspring correlates to some extent with group structure. It is found in all monogamous species, although its extent differs between species and even among groups of the same species (CARPENTER, 1940; CHIVERS, 1971, 1972 ; EPPLE, 1975a; Fox, 1972, 1974; INGRAM, 1977; MASON, 1966; MOYNIHAN, 1964; REDICAN, 1976). In most polygamous and polygynous species of non-human primates the mother cares ex- clusively for the infants;exceptions are species such as hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) (JOLLY, 1972; KUMMER, 1971) and barbary macaques (Macaca sylvana) (DEAG & CROOK, 1971) in which males have been observed to care for infants in somewhat the same way as a mother.

Zucker3 Received November 1, 1996; revised April 1 and August 8, 1997; accepted September 12, 1997 Proximate and ultimate explanations of interactions between infants and nonmothers vary depending upon the relatedness of the interactors. We investigated interactions of infants and nonmothers from a 22-month continuous study and from the long-term monitoring of the mantled howler population of La Pacifica, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. Relatedness is low or absent in these mantled howler groups. Juvenile females appeared to practice care skills with older infants, but as most first infants died, they failed to benefit. Infant positive interactions with adults occurred with the mother and probable father. Other adult females behaved aggressively toward the youngest infants. Mothers were retentive of infants and responded negatively to these interactions, suggesting that they perceived them as threatening. Interactions with infants appear to reflect competition in groups of unrelated adults. A review of other populations of Alouatta palliata and other species of howlers indicate variability in social group size and suggest variability in intragroup relatedness. We suggest that further study will confirm that social behavior (including interactions with infants) will vary by resource availability (group size) and associated demographic patterns (male and female migration) that affect relatedness in howler social groups. Serio-Silva 1 The availability and spatial distribution of food resources afect animal behavior and survival. Black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) have a foraging strategy to balance their nutrient intake that involves mixing their consumption of leaves and fruits. The spatial aggregation of food items should impact this strategy, but how it does so is largely unknown. We quantifed how leaf and fruit intake combined (here termed food set selection) was spatially aggregated in patches and how food aggregation varied across seasons. Using variograms we estimated patch diameter and with Generalized Least Square models determined the efect of food spatial aggregation on food selection. Only fruits were structured in patches in the season of highest availability (dry-season). The patches of food set selection had a diameter between 6.9 and 14 m and were explained by those of mature fruit availability which were between 18 and 19 m in diameter. Our results suggest that the spatial pattern of food selection is infuenced by patches of large fruit-bearing trees, not by particular species. Fruit also occur along spatial gradients, but these do not explain food selection, suggesting that howlers maximize food intake in response to local aggregation of fruit that are limiting during certain seasons. We demonstrate how the independent spatial modelling of resources and behavior enables the defnition of patches and testing their spatial relationship.

Within this framework, we have added insights into the interactions between primate hosts and their parasites from a long-term study in Costa Rica. We collected fecal samples from mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata) over a 9-year period (1986- 1994 inclusive) and analyzed them for parasite eggs, larvae, cysts, and oocysts. We found many misperceptions inherent in the typical methodology of primate parasite surveys and in the reporting of the findings. Our work in Costa Rica suggests that a snapshot effect occurs with most surveys. A static view does not reflect the dynamic and changing ecological interaction between host and parasite. We describe some problems with parasite data analyses that emphasize the need for long-term longitudinal surveys in wild primate groups. KEY WORDS: primates; parasites; survey; Costa Rica; Alouatta.   • Proyecto Ba'tz De Los Maya
    I first came to México on a vacation with my family in the Caribbean town of Akumal. I was working on my Bachelor’s degree in anthropology then and was keen on learning about the Maya people and their history. After visiting Coba, Tulum, and Chichen-Itza, I was hooked. When I decided to become a biological anthropologist, studying early primate evolution and the behavior and ecology of living primates, I noticed, as I continued my travels, an abundance of monkeys in and around the Maya archaeological zones of México, Belize, and Guatemala. While visiting Palenque in the summer of 2000, Alouatta pigra juvenile. I met Dr. Alejandro Estrada (Universidad Nacional Photo by LG Luecke, 2005. Autonomia de Mexico), who was conducting a census of the howler monkeys at the site. Later we spent several months censusing black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) and spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) in Yaxchilán, Bonampak, and Lacanja in Chiapas, Calakmul in Campeche, and Tikal in Guatemala.1 We found that these protected zones are indeed important conservation areas for monkey populations. Three species inhabit the forests of México: the mantled howler monkey (A. palliata) which ranges from Colombia to Veracruz; the black howler (A. pigra), which is endemic to this region and has nearly 80% of its distribution in México; and Geoffroy’s spider monkey (A. geoffroyi), which is found in most areas of the Yucatan Peninsula as well as in the southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca. Howler monkeys are primarily folivorous (leaf-eaters) and supplement their diets by eating fruit and flowers, and because they occupy the same ecological niche, their distributions rarely overlap.

Blood samples of howler monkeys were collected at various locations in Costa Rica, and electrophoresis of total plasma proteins yielded no variation. We also conducted starch gel electrophoresis of red cell isozymes and did not ®nd variation for any of the 14 loci analyzed (i.e., ACP, ADA, CA2, EST, GPI, IDH, LDH-1, LDH-2, MDH, PGD, PGM-1, PGM-2, SOD, and TPI). These ®ndings were compared with the levels of genetic variation for A. seniculus and A. belzebul from one Brazilian population. Four of the 14 isozymes (ADA, GPI, PGD, and SOD) showed more than one allele for these species. Both A. seniculus and A. belzebul from Brazil showed similar levels of genetic variation. The potential causes of the low genetic variation in A. palliata from Costa Rica are discussed. RESUMEN Se estudio la diversidad geneÂtica de los monos congo (Alouatta palliata) de Costa Rica.
