There is nothing more dearer to Ta`ala during the days of qurbani than to sacrifice an animal. The prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has said: ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ َﻣﺎ َﻋﻤ َﻞ َآدﻣ ﱞﻲ ﻣ ْﻦ ﻋَ َﻤ ٍﻞ َﻳـْﻮَم ْاﻟﻨﱠﺤ ِﺮ َأَﺣ ﱠﺐ إَﱃ ﷲ ﻣ ْﻦ إْﻫَﺮاق ﱠاﻟﺪم، إﻧﱠﻪُ ﻟَﻴَْﺄِﰐ َﻳـْﻮَم اﻟﻘﻴَﺎَﻣﺔ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ٍ ِ ﺑ ُﻘ ُﺮو� َﺎ َو ْأَﺷَﻌ ِﺎرَﻫﺎ َوأَﻇْﻼَﻓَﻬﺎ، َو ﱠأَن ﱠاﻟﺪَم ﻟََﻴـَﻘ ُﻊ ﻣ َﻦ ﷲ ﲟَ َﻜﺎن َﻗـْﺒ َﻞ ْأَن َﻳـَﻘ َﻊ ﻣ َﻦ اﻷ َْر ِض، ِ ِ .ﻓَﻄﻴﺒُﻮا 䛬َﺎ َﻧـْﻔ ًﺴﺎ (135 /3) ﺳﻨﻦ اﻟﱰﻣﺬي ت ﺑﺸﺎر There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of Qurbani than the sacrificing of an animal. (The animal) shall come on the Day of Judgement with its horns, hairs, and hooves (to be weighed). The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and heart. (Sunan al- Tirmizi v3/135)

Who is required to perform Udhiyyah/Qurbani Sacrificing an animal on any of the days of udhiyyah (which are 10th, 11th or 12th of Dhul Hijjah) is wajib (necessary) on every muqim (non musafir) (mature) male or female owning nisab which is 87.475 grams of gold or 612.34 grams of silver or their equivalent value in local currency. Therefore, each person owning nisab must perform the udhiyyah (sacrificing of an animal) separately. It is mustahab (desirable) for every person intending to perform udhiyyah to refrain from clipping their hair and nails during the ten days of Dhul Hijjah until the animal has been sacrificed.

My Salaah, my worship and my living and dying is all for Allah, the Lord of the worlds, who has no partner. This is what I have been ordered. And I am amongst the Muslimeen. In the name of Allah and Allah is the greatest.

Which animals are allowed to be sacrificed during qurbani/udhiyyah ?

Animals which are allowed to be slaughtered for udhiyyah are:

1. Goats, sheep, rams (when they are one year or older)

Animals that will be sacrificed for udhiyyah should be free from major defects for it to qualify as an animal for udhiyyah. Some of the major defects that will render an animal incapable of being an udhiyyah animal are:

1. Being blind from both or one eye.

2. A lame animal which walks with only three legs and is unable to use its forth leg due to which it can’t walk itself to the place of slaughter. 3. An extremely thin animal that has no marrow in its bones. 4. An animal whose complete tail or ears or most of it have been cut off.

Note: only if 1/3 or more of the tail remains it will not be regarded as a major defect. 5. An animal whose hand or feet are cut. 6. An animal without teeth or most of its teeth.

I MISSED MY QURBANI/UDHIYYAH, WHAT SHOULD I DO? If qurbani was wajib on a person and due to some reason he was not able to purchase and perform his qurbani within the days of qurbani, he will have to give the price of a qurbani animal such as a goat sheep or ram into sadaqah as compensation.
