Fort Wayne has 11 teenagers on its roster. The average age for a Fort Wayne batter this year, according to baseball-reference.com, has been 19.3. That is the youngest in the league by far. The average age for a Midwest League batter has been 21.3. (Cedar Rapids is second youngest at 20.8. Clinton is oldest at 22.3.) NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The TinCaps went 8-2 on their 10-game homestand. Fort Wayne is 26-16 at home this year, including 18-6 since May 14. The ’Caps are slashing .264/.346/.379 at home this year compared to .214/.295/.314 on the road, where they’re 12-23. The TinCaps have averaged 5.0 runs per game at home and 3.6 per game on the road. ORNELAS ON BASE: Tirso Ornelas’ 27-game on-base streak came to an end Thursday night @ Lake County. The on-base streak was the 2nd longest active streak in the MWL at the time, and it stands as the longest such streak for a TinCap this season. (The longest in the league this year: 31 games, Michael Beltre, Dayton.) From May 24-June 27, Ornelas hit .297 with a .425 OBP. He had 6 doubles, 3 triples, 4 homers, and 16 RBIs during the run. Maybe most impressive, he walked more times (19) than he struck out (16). PADRES ON DECK: Friday, the TinCaps and Padres agreed on a 2-year extension of their Player Development Contract (PDC) through the 2020 season. This will stretch the affiliation between the organizations to 22 years continuing what is already the longest-lasting Minor League Baseball affiliation in San Diego’s franchise history. Padres Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller and TinCaps President Mike Nutter held a press conference at Parkview Field on Friday to announce the extension. This season is the 20th year of affiliation between Fort Wayne and San Diego, going back to 1999.

UNI BASEBALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WINNING Dating back to 1893, no University of Northern Iowa athletic team has won more games than the Panther baseball program. This season, UNI baseball opens its lOOth season with 952 wins all-time. (No baseball team was fielded in 1903-04, 1909-10 and 1943-45.) Originally begun when the school was known as Iowa State Normal School, the baseball team has represented the school when it was also known as Iowa State Teachers College and the State College of Iowa before assuming its present title in 1967. Starting in the years with Captain Avery as coach of the first two squads, the Panthers have built a program that thrives on hard working young men dedicated to being the best they can be on the diamond and in the classroom. Last year was no exception, as five Panthers; Ryan McGuire, Kevin Briggeman, Greg Woodin, Scott Sobkowiak and Aaron Houdeshell were named academic all-MVC by the sports information directors of the league.

A SPECIAL CLASS OF SENIORS This spring marks the final season for five seniors with the University of Northern Iowa baseball program: Jeremy Bunkers, Jason Eldridge, Aaron Lubach, Scott Schirmer and Jesse Zimmer. It also figures to be the final campaign for junior Matt Cobb, who plans to graduate in the spring and attend medical school at Kansas in the future. Over the past three seasons, this senior class has a record of 86-79, and they need 27 wins to become the winningest senior class in Panther baseball history. For seniors Aaron Lubach and Scott Schirmer, it marks the culmination of a ca reer that included a 32-23 season in 1997. In that season, the Panthers finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference, as Schirmer was named to the all-MVC honorable men tion team. Last season Lubach was used as both closer and set-up man, notching a perfect 3-0 record in the process.

  • Four Teams Vie for 2007 International League Cham
2007 Governors’ Cup Playoff Preview For Immediate Release September 5, 2007 Governors’ Cup Playoffs Begin Tonight; Four Teams Vie for 2007 International League Championship The International League postseason begins tonight in the south, with Durham and Richmond the hosts as the quest for the Governors’ Cup begins. The Durham Bulls, who won back-to-back championships in 2002 and 2003, return to the playoffs for the first time in three years as winners of the IL South. Their opponent will be the current two-time defending champions, the Toledo Mud Hens. Toledo was the first team to clinch a postseason berth after they knocked off Indianapolis on August 26, but it wasn’t until Sunday night that they knew they’d be matched up with the Bulls in the first round. Durham, after trailing Richmond by 10.0 games earlier this year, came all the way back to win the division by 2.0 games over the Braves. The Bulls hold the distinction of being the last team to successfully dispatch of the Mud Hens in a postseason series, having knocked off Toledo in a three-game sweep in 2002. The Mud Hens got back to the playoffs again in 2005, since which time they have gone 13-5 in postseason play. This year, Toledo took seven out of twelve against Durham, although the Bulls won four of the last five games. The series begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The other first round matchup will get underway from Richmond, Virginia at the same time tonight.
