ENDECACANTHUS BLEEICER 1863 (Poissons, Percqormes) . Réhabilitation de Lzitjanus endocacanthus, Poissons Percifom,es Lutjanidae, à propos d’une série de jeunes Lzitjanus récoltés dans la région de Pointe-Noire, Congo Brazzaville, et comprenant quatre des cinq espèces africaines du genre. Nous avons eu récemment à trier et déterminer une petite collection de Lutjanus réunie en 1963 et 1964 par M. A. STAUCIIdans les eaux côtières de la région de Pointe Noire, au Congo Brazzaville. Cette collection ren- fermait 66 individus jeunes, de 29 à 150 mm de longueur standard, dont le détail par espèces et par lieux de capture est donné plus loin. Bien que L. fulgens (VALENCIENNES)1830, facilement reconnaissable au nombre élevé de ses branchiospines, n’ait pas été rencontré, l’ensemble de ces 66 Lutjanus comprenait quatre espèces distinctes. Parmi celles-ci, L. goreensis (VALENCIENNES)1830 et L. agennes BLEEKER1863 ont été identifiées sans dificulté. Les deux autres correspondaient assez exactement aux types de L. eutactus BLEEKER1863 et L. endecacanthus BLEEKER1863, auxquels nous les avons comparés directement. A ce propos, nous adressons nos plus sincères remerciements à M.M. BOESEMAN,dix Musée de Leiden, qui nous a communiqué les deux types en question, nous permettant ainsi de les étudier conjointement avec le type de L. dentatus (DUMSRIL)1860 et avec les exemplaires en provenance de la région de Pointe Noire. Patterson III2 and Covadonga R. Arias3 Abstract Background: The microbiota plays an essential role in host health, particularly through competition with opportunistic pathogens. Changes in total bacterial load and microbiota structure can indicate early stages of disease, and information on the composition of bacterial communities is essential to understanding fish health. Although Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) is an economically important species in recreational fisheries and a primary aquaculture candidate, no information is available on the microbial communities of this species. The aim of this study was to survey the microbiota of apparently healthy, wild-caught Red Snapper from the Gulf of Mexico. Sampled Red Snapper showed no physical signs of disease. Tissues that are either primary entry routes for pathogens (feces, gill) or essential to disease diagnosis (blood) were sampled. Bacteria were enumerated using culture-based techniques and characterized by pyrosequencing. Results: Aerobic counts of feces and gill samples were 107 and 104 CFU g-1, respectively. All individuals had positive blood cultures with counts up to 23 CFU g-1. Gammaproteobacteria dominated the microbiota of all sample types, including the genera Pseudoalteromonas and Photobacterium in feces and Pseudomonas in blood and gill. Gill samples were also dominated by Vibrio while blood samples had high abundances of Nevskia. High variability in microbiota composition was observed between individuals, with percent differences in community composition ranging from 6 to 76 % in feces, 10 to 58 % in gill, and 52 to 64 % in blood. -

Texas A&M University, College Station.Texas 77843.U.S.A.. e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The feeding ecology and morphological diversification of fish assemblages of two coastal lakes in southern Benin (West Africa) were examined to compare patterns of community organization. Though located only 18 km apart, the two fish assemblages had dissimilar species composition. and this is largely derived from differences in connectivity to the Gulf of Guinea, salinity and pH. Among the 35 and 20 species sampled from Lake Nokoue (connected with a sea) and Lagoon Toho- Todougba (no sea connection), respectively, only a few species dominated each system. Lake Nokoue was dominated by the perciform Gerres meLanopterus and the clupeiform Ethmalosa fimbria/a, and Lagoon Toho- Todougba was dominated by the characiformBrycinus Longipinnis. In Lake Nokoue. the akadja habitat (dense stands of woody debris installed by humans to attract fishes) had high species richness compared to the other lake habitats. Multivariate procedures were used to examine trophic guilds and the relationship between morphology and diet. Overall. thirteen trophic guilds were identified. with detritivore and piscivore guilds having the most species. Lagoon Toho- Todougba was dominated by detritivorous and insectivorous species and Lake Nokoue, a larger lake with a connection to the sea. was dominated by piscivores. In Lagoon Toho- Todougba, consumption of vegetation and insects was common, but these items were very rare in Lake Nokoue fish diets. possibly because the destruction of its fringing mangroves has reduced their availability for fishes. -

AN ANNOTATED LIST OF FISHES FROM THE NIGER DELTA by M. BOESEMAN (Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden) (With 6 plates and 2 figures) At the end of November 1960, the Leiden Museum received an interesting collection of animals, mostly fishes, from the Niger delta. All specimens were collected by Mr. H. J. G. Beets, at the time employed by Shell B.P. — Delta Investigations, during the period May to August 1960, and in the region between Port Harcourt and Brass. Unfortunately, owing to lack of time, the separate specimens or lots were not labelled, but the collecting localities are limited in number and restricted to only the eastern part of the delta. The fish collection, consisting of 130 specimens, proved to belong to 51 species, some of which gave occasion for a reexamination and com- parison of Bleeker and Steindachner types in the Leiden Museum collection. Collecting localities and descriptive notes (fig. 1) The following information is almost wholly taken from the extensive notes provided by Mr. Beets. Loc. I : Brass, Brass River, St. Nicholas River, Okpoma Creek, and small confluent creeks. In this area, situated immediately behind the Atlantic coast, the water must be considered brackish (Okpoma Creek) to almost completely salt. Most specimens were collected here. Loc. 2: Old Sangama, environs of Sego Creek, about 45 km WSW of Port Harcourt. Fresh water throughout the year. Only few fishes collected. Loc. 3 : Ekulama, Bille Creek, San Bartholomeo River, 35-45 km SW of Port Harcourt. Brackish water. Loc. 4 : Port Harcourt and environs. Brackish water. Behind the sandy beach and a narrow zone of coastal forest, a wide marshy area reaches far inland to the foothills, its average width being approximately 35-40 km. -

Fishes were sampled by using a 20 mm mesh cast-net from November 2016 to April 2017 over tidal and diel cycles. Twenty three marine fish species belonging to 15 families were from the Kakum River Estuary and Benya Lagoon which indicated low species richness compared to that reported in these same water bodies. Fishes of the family Mugilidae were dominant and the five species (Mugil bananensis, Mugil curema, Mugil cephalu, Liza falcipinnis, Liza dumerillii) sampled accounted for 54.63% of the fish from the estuary and 77.69% of the fish of the lagoon samples. The similarity indicators between the two communities (Index of similarity =0.89) during the study were similar and this reflected in the closeness of Shannon-Wiener index of diversity (H') values of 2.05 for the estuary and 1.55 for the lagoon marine communities. -
