2.02 GOODWILL GAMES III St. Petersburg, RUS (July 27/31) - A top-rated international field was invited to compete in the third edition of the Goodwill Games, which included archery for the first time. The direct elimination competition was held in the unique setting of the infield of Petrovskiy Stadium, with an invitational field limited to eight male and eight female archers. Home fans cheered Russia's Gennadiy Mitrofanov to victory in the men's event; he scored strong rounds of 114 and 111 to take the . There were no surprises in the women's competition, where Korea's Youn-Jeong Cho (1992 Olympic gold medalist) and Hyo-Jung Kim (1993 World Champion) met after escaping shoot-outs in the earlier rounds. Kim triumphed again, 103-101 to re-affirm her place as the world's finest woman archer.

2.03 XIV WORLD FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS Vertus, FRA (August 12-14) - Magnificent scenery was combined with exceptional shooting under pressure to produce a thoroughly enjoyable World Field Championships. New champions were crowned in all six individual divisions, with the Italian men and Swedish women overcoming some rainy weather early on to collect most of the coveted gold medals. Italy's Andrea Parenti regained the Olympic Division World Field Championship he first won in 1988, while countryman Alessandro Gaudenti improved his standing in each round to win an exciting shoot-off from Bob Burns (USA) to win the Barebow Division title. A welcome testament to the continuing expansion of interest in the Compound Division was the total of 52 entrants, more than in either the Barebow or Olympic Divisions. The women's competition in the World Field Championships has been dominated in recent years by French archers, but the home team had to share honors with a determined Swedish team that provided four of the six divisional finalists. The Olympic Division featured an all-Swedish final as Jenny Sjowall defeated Carina Henriksson, 48- 39, while in the Compound final Michelle Ragsdale (USA) outscored Petra Eriksson, 54-52.

- 28 - 1994 IN REVIEW The hosts were not left without a champion, however, as Odile Boussiere defeated Marie Palm (SWE), 52-50, in the Barebow Division. French archers have now won this title three times in a row (Nadine Visconti in 1990 and 1992) and in five of the last seven World Field Championships.

The Olympic Division final saw two more from the USA, as Victor Wunderle defeated Rodney White, 110-106. Australians dominated the women's Compound competition. Olympic Division powerhouse Korea showed that it will be a dominant force in women's archery for many years to come by sweeping the top four places. The final was a triumph for Hyun-Ji Kang, who outshot Jin-Hae Hwang, 112-108. In the bronze medal match, Woon-Joo Park defeated teammate Hye-Young Park, 108-99. To the surprise of absolutely no one, Korea's team effort was easily sufficient to win the gold medal, defeating Italy in the final, 248-224.

2.05 XII CHAMPIONSHIPS OF THE AMERICAS Havana, CUB (November 3-9) - The new competition for Compound bows highlighted the 12th continental championships of the Western Hemisphere. In the absence of the United States team, which could not attend due to political difficulties between the U.S. government and the host nation, a pitched battle for overall supremacy raged between the teams from Mexico and Brazil. The Mexicans were best in the Olympic Division and ended up with 11 gold medals, best among all nations. But the Brazilians had a huge edge in the Compound Division and had the most medals overall, 26. The host nation had a strong showing, winning seven medals - the third-highest total among all nations.

- 86 - 3. FITA RULES AND ROUNDS

3.01 THE DIVISIONS In competitive archery, FITA has 3 championship disciplines and 3 divisions. The three divisions of competition involve three different kinds of bows:

< Bare Bow Division: This division shoots with a recurve bow without a mechanical sight or stabilizers. Archers using ``bare bows'' may use parts of their bow or arrow as a sighting device, or they may shoot using the ``instinctive'' style, just looking at the target without aid of an aiming device.

< Olympic Division: This division shoots with a recurve bow on which you may have a mechanical sight, but without optical devices. This division also allows stabilizers on the bow, and due to this more sophisticated equipment, Olympic Division archers will normally shoot more accurately than in the Bare Bow division.

< Compound Division: This division shoots with a bow using pulleys and cables to make the holding weight less than half the draw weight. The archers may use sights with optical enhancements and a mechanical device to actually release the bowstring. Due to this advanced equipment, this division will normally be the most accurate.

3.02 THE DISCIPLINES These are the forms of competition familiar to archery enthusiasts: indoor target, outdoor target and field archery.

- 87 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS FITA sanctions world championships in these three disciplines only:

< FITA Indoor Target Archery: This competition is shot indoors at 18 m and 25 m, in the Olympic and Compound Divisions.

< FITA Outdoor Target Archery: The competition is held outdoors on an open (flat) field, at various fixed distances. Both the Olympic and Compound Divisions compete in this discipline. The archery competition in the Olympic Games is a part of the FITA outdoor target archery program; however, only the Olympic Division is allowed.

< FITA Field Archery: Field archery is also shot outdoors. However, contrary to Target Archery, Field Archery is shot along a marked course or path in the woods or in the fields. In this competition, all three divisions (Bare Bow, Olympic and Compound) may participate. FITA also recognizes three other unique archery forms: Clout Archery, Flight Archery and Ski-Arc.

< Clout Archery is a long-distance competition for the Olympic Division only, scoring rounds of 36 arrows from 165 meters for men or 125 meters for women.

< Flight Archery is the ultimate in long-distance shooting; the goal is to shoot the arrow the furthest! Rounds of six arrows are held and divisions are divided into Target Bows (any Target or Field Archery bow) and Flight Bows. The Flight Bow division includes exotic

- 88 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS sub-divisions such as 35-pound (draw weight) bows, 50-pound, unlimited and foot (!) bows for women and 50-pound (draw weight), 65-pound, 80-pound, unlimited and foot bows for men. Only the longest shot is scored.

< Ski-Arc is a combined cross-country skiing and archery competition. The men's individual event covers 12 km, with three ends of four arrows each shot during the race, using any type of Target or Compound Bow. The women's and junior competitions cover 8 km, with two ends of four arrows per race. There is also a 4 x 3 km relay, with each racer shooting one end of four arrows.

3.03 ABOUT INDOOR TARGET ARCHERY Indoor archery has been gaining in popularity, especially in cold- weather nations. There are Olympic and Compound bow divisions for men and women. The Olympic Division competition is organized into four different kinds of rounds:

< 25 m Indoor Round: 60 arrows shot at a 60 cm diameter target face;

< 18 m Indoor Round: 60 arrows shot at a 40 cm diameter target face;

< Combined Indoor Round: the 25 m and 18 m rounds shot in succession and in that order;

< Grand Indoor Round: used in championships, this round includes the Combined Indoor Round for qualification of

- 89 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS the top 16 archers and then a Finals Round of eighth-finals, quarterfinals, semifinals and Grand Final with each stage consisting of a match of 15 arrows shot at 18 meters at a special 20 cm-diameter target face (known as a ``treble face'') with special scoring of 10-9-8-7-6 only. For the Compound Division, three different kinds of rounds are used:

< The Combined Indoor Round includes 60 arrows shot from 25 meters at a 40 cm-diameter target face.

< The Double Compound Indoor Round includes two successive Combined Indoor Rounds.

< The Grand Indoor Round is used in championships and consists of a Double Compound Indoor Round as qualification for the top 16 archers and then a Finals Round of eighth-finals, quarterfinals, semifinals and Grand Final. Each of these stages is shot as a match of 15 arrows per person from 25 meters at a treble face target (10-9-8-7-6 scoring only) of 20 cm in diameter. Scoring on indoor archery target faces is from 10 in the center ring to 1 on the outside ring with each scoring ring having a width of 3 cm for 60 cm faces, measured from the center of the target. For the 40 cm target, the scoring area is 2 cm wide for each ring, measured from the center of the target. The target rings are separated into colors and each color ring is divided in half to allow scoring of two point values: 10 and 9 are gold, 8 and 7 are red, 6 and 5 are light blue, 4 and 3 are black and the 2 and 1-point rings are white.

- 90 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS

3.04 ABOUT OUTDOOR TARGET ARCHERY The familiar outdoor archery rounds used in World Championships and Olympic Games are the same for both the Olympic and Compound divisions and include:

< FITA Outdoor Round, consisting of 144 arrows: 36 each at 90- 70-50-30 m for men and 70-60-50-30 m for women. Targets of 122 cm in diameter are used for the two longest distances in each gender and 80 cm-diameter targets are used for the 50 m and 30 m distances.

< Double FITA Outdoor Round, consisting of two FITA Outdoor Rounds for a total of 288 arrows.

< Olympic Round, whose introduction was one of archery's great successes of the Olympic year of 1992. This format features one-on-one, side-by-side competition to determine winners and losers. The new ``Olympic Round'' was created in response to interest from spectators and television, who want instant scoring and standings information in the final shots of the Olympic competition. The new round includes three stages, incorporating the traditional FITA Round with a series of lightning-fast matches to determine the top three places:

C Qualification Round: Archers shoot 144 arrows: 36 each at four distances. The maximum possible score is ten points per arrow or 1,440 in total.

- 91 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS Men: Day 1: 90 m + 70 m Day 2: 50 m + 30 m Women: Day 1: 70 m + 60 m Day 2: 50 m + 30 m The top 64 in each division will advance to single elimination match play.

C Elimination Rounds: = A: 64 archers will be paired off according to their standing at the end of the Qualification Round. 32 one-on-one matches will be held, with each archer shooting 18 arrows at 70 meters. = B: 32 archers will face off in 16 matches of 18 arrows each at 70 meters, with the 16 winners advancing to the Final Rounds. = C: 16 archers will compete in eight matches of 18 arrows each at 70 meters, with the eight winners advancing to the Final Rounds. With ten points possible per arrow, a perfect score in this round would be 180 points.

C Final Rounds: = In the quarterfinals, semifinals, gold medal and bronze medal matches, each archer will shoot 12 arrows (maximum of 120 points). The two archers in each match will alternate shooting and each will have

- 92 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS a time limit of 40 seconds to get set and shoot each arrow. = Scoring will be immediate and an under-the-target scoreboard will provide the results of each shot and the cumulative score for each archer. Ties will be broken in ``sudden death'' as each archer will shoot one arrow: the archer whose arrow has the highest score will win. If tied, a second arrow will be shot for highest score. If still tied, a third arrow will determine the winner by awarding victory to the archer whose arrow lands closest to the center. In the team competition, the top 16 teams will be selected from the Qualification Round (three persons per team; total of 4,320 points possible) and face off in single elimination matches in the eighth finals, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Each team must shoot 27 arrows within a total of nine minutes: three ends of nine arrows each (three per archer) in periods of three minutes. The maximum possible score for each team is 270 points (27 arrows x ten points per arrow). The format of the elimination rounds for individuals and teams is illustrated on pages 94-95. For the 1996 Olympic Games, a special qualification procedure will be used to determine which Member Associations will enter archers, and how many they will enter in the Olympic Tournament:

- 93 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS Olympic Round Seeding Diagram for Individual competitions:

- 94 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS Olympic Round Seeding Diagram for Team competitions:

- 95 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS < The FITA, in agreement with the International Olympic Committee, has determined that 64 men and 64 women (128 total) will compete in the Olympic Archery Tournament. < The qualification procedure is centered around the 1995 World Target Archery Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia. The results will qualify 46 archers of each gender: • The top eight men's and top eight women's teams in the World Championships will earn three places each in the Olympic tournament, regardless of where the three individual team members finish in the individual competition. These places are ``national'' and not ``personal''; the individual archer is not assured of competing in Atlanta in 1996, but his or her Member Association is assured of having the three entries earned by its team in the Olympic tournament. • The 22 highest-ranked archers in each gender not affiliated with the top eight teams in their division (men or women) will also earn places in the 1996 Olympic tournament for their Member Association. • No country may have more than three total entries in each gender in the Olympic tournament.

< Additional places in the Olympic Tournament can be won at one of the five Continental Qualifying Tournaments being held in 1995 and 1996. These competitions provide an opportunity for Member Associations in each continental group to obtain up to

- 96 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS two additional places in the Olympic Tournament in addition to any places won in the World Championships (for a total of not more than three in each gender division). The top three men and women finishers in each of these qualifying tournaments will earn placements for their Member Associations in the Olympic competitions (except if that Member Association already has three qualifiers in that division).

< Finally, a special Tripartite Commission made up of representatives of the FITA, the International Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Committees will invite up to three Member Associations to send an individual archer in each gender. At the Games, the archers will compete in a ``Ranking Round,'' shooting 72 arrows from 70 meters to establish an order of 1-64 for seeding the head-to-head Olympic Round competition that will begin with the 32nd-finals for men and women.

3.05 ABOUT FIELD ARCHERY Per E. Bolstad, the chairman of the FITA Field Committee notes that Field Archery is considered to be the style of archery that is closest to the original way of using the bow and arrow, as it was used for survival by the first human hunters. The first field course was meant as a substitute to the hunt and a practice for the hunter. Today, the courses are shot in accordance with strict rules, and even if the terrain varies from course to course, the distances and sizes of targets remain consistent wherever shooting a FITA Field competition. The competition is shot as the archers go along a marked course in the woods or on open fields.

- 97 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS Remember that Field Archery includes Barebow, Olympic and Compound divisions, but the structure of the rounds is the same for all:

< Field Archery Rounds consist of 12, 16, 20 or 24 targets at the discretion of the tournament director. At each target, three arrows are shot for rounds of 36, 48, 60 or 72 arrows in all. Courses can include targets with marked distances or unmarked distances; archers will find numbered posts along the course marking from where they must shoot. Targets of four sizes are used in all rounds: 20 cm, 40 cm, 60 cm and 80 cm in diameter. The target face is unique to Field Archery; this ``Field Face'' includes scoring rings in gold and black with point values from 1-5: the gold middle spot is worth 5 points, with the surrounding black rings worth four, three, two and one point.

< Arrowhead Rounds consist of two separate Field Rounds, shot on either marked or unmarked courses.

< The World Championship Round begins with two Field Rounds - one on a marked course and the other on an unmarked course - of 24 targets each (72 arrows) to qualify the top 16 archers in each bow division and gender. These 16 then compete in an Elimination Round of 12 targets (six marked for distance and six unmarked), shooting three arrows at each target (36 total) to narrow the field to eight competitors. A second 12-target Elimination Round is then held to qualify four finalists in each bow category and gender.

- 98 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS These four ``survivors'' compete in a Finals Round of one-on- one matches to determine the place-winners. The first-ranked and fourth-ranked, and second and third-ranked competitors face off in four-target (two marked and two unmarked) matches of 12 arrows (three per target). The winners of these semifinals move on to a similarly formatted match for the championship and the losers compete for third place. For the Team Finals Round, the top four teams in each gender are selected by adding the scores of each team's top individual scorer in all three divisions (Bare Bow, Olympic and Compound). The teams ranked first and fourth and then second and third face off in matches of four targets. At each target, one arrow is shot by each of the three team members: one from each division. The winners of these 12-arrow semifinals then compete for the championship, while the losers are matched to determine the third-place finisher.

< Forest Round, which is perhaps the most exciting for archer and spectator alike. This round may include 12, 16, 20 or 24 targets, with three arrows shot per target for rounds of 36, 48, 60 or 72 arrows in all. Forest Rounds are usually shot on unmarked courses, but may be shot on marked courses if desired. However, only the first-scoring arrow shot at any target is recorded and targets have only an inner and outer ring, making this round very fast-paced. Another unusual aspect of this round is that targets may include target faces with pictures of forest animals or even three-dimensional replicas of forest animals, made from plastic foam.

- 99 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS You can tell which bow division will shoot at what post by its color: blue for barebow, red for Olympic and compound bow users. In the Forest Round, a single white post is often used for all archers, regardless of bow type. Most field archers find the challenge of shooting at unmarked distances very exciting, and this is one of the reasons why the FITA Forest Round is so popular in certain countries. Besides the challenge of shooting at unknown distances, the field archer must also practice shooting both uphill and downhill, along the ridge of a hill or across a stream or a lake. Additionally, he or she must expect to have both wind and sunlight changing direction from target to target while walking along the course. The field archer has to master the four sizes of field target faces of 20, 40, 60 and 80 cm in diameter, and corresponding sizes of animal faces for the Forest Round. The different faces are set at varying distances: the Bare Bow division shoots at closer distances than the Olympic and Compound divisions. The Compound Division shoots from the same distance as the Olympic Division but scores on a smaller center spot. Distances can range from 5 m away for Bare Bow archers shooting at 20 cm targets up to 60 m for Olympic Division and Compound Bow archers shooting at 80 cm targets! Field archery is great fun for archers of all ages both males and females, but it can also be a very competitive sport for those that want to compete in tournaments. On the other hand, Field Archery is not so intense as Target Archery, since the archers are moving in groups of four through the woods not knowing what scores most of the competitors have shot before the round is finished. In this respect many archers find Field Archery more relaxing than Target Archery,

- 100 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS and many bring the whole family with them when going for a practice round or during a tournament. The last couple of years has seen a large growth in Field Archery, and this tendency seems to be increasing.

3.06 THE TARGETS Archery's different disciplines all use different targets and the target and competition types are listed for convenience here. Scoring rings on the classic Target Archery indoor and outdoor target are concentric and follow a standard color pattern: Gold (inner) 10 points Blue (outer) 5 Gold (outer) 9 Black (inner) 4 Red (inner) 8 Black (outer) 3 Red (outer) 7 White (inner) 2 Blue (inner) 6 White (outer) 1 Please note that a different scheme is used for Field Archery. The specifics of targets in each discipline include:

< Indoor Archery uses 60 cm and 40 cm target faces at either 25 m or 18 m, depending on the type of bow used. For the 60 cm face, each of the ten concentric scoring rings is 3 cm wide and the center ``10-ring'' is 6 cm in diameter. For the 40 cm face - used for all championship competitions - each scoring circle is 2 cm wide and the center ``10-ring'' is just 4 cm in diameter.

- 101 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS For special finals rounds in indoor archery, a special ``treble face'' is used. This target is only 20 cm in diameter and scores points in five rings worth 10-9-8-7-6 points only. Each of the concentric scoring rings is 2 cm wide and the center ``10-ring'' is 4 cm in diameter.

< Outdoor Target Archery uses two faces, a 122 cm face and an 80 cm diameter face. The 122 cm face is used for 90 m and 70 m distances in the men's competitions and 70 m and 60 m distances in women's competitions; the 80 cm face is used for the 50 m and 30 m distances for men and women. The concentric scoring rings on the 122 cm face are 6.1 cm in width and the center ``10-ring'' is 12.2 cm in diameter. On an 80 cm target, the rings are 4 cm wide and the center spot is 8 cm in diameter.

< Field Archery uses a special series of ``field faces'' that have five concentric rings; field archery faces vary in size from 20 cm in width, up to 40 cm, 60 cm and 80 cm. The center spot is gold and worth five points, followed by concentric black rings worth 4, 3, 2 and 1 point. The widths of the rings on field faces are concentric, but vary in size depending on the type of bow used:

Width of the Scoring Zones per Face Points 20 cm 40 cm 60 cm 80 cm Bare Bow and Olympic Divisions: 1-5 4 cm 8 cm 12 cm 16 cm

- 102 - ARCHERY RULES AND ROUNDS Points 20 cm 40 cm 60 cm 80 cm Compound Division only: 5 2 cm 4 cm 6 cm 8 cm 4 6 cm 12 cm 18 cm 24 cm 1-3 4 cm 8 cm 12 cm 16 cm Forest Rounds are different again, featuring three rings: an innermost ring for the Compound Division, a larger ``inner ring'' for the Bare Bow and Olympic divisions and an outer ring for all divisions, with differing point values assigned depending on which of three shots at a target hits inside any ring. Only the first scoring shot is counted, along the following scale:

Ring 1st shot 2nd shot 3rd shot Inner 15 points 10 points 5 points Outer 12 points 7 points 2 points Forest Round targets come in 20, 40, 60 or 80 cm sizes with Compound Division inner rings of 5 cm in diameter for a 20 cm target, 10 cm for a 40 cm target, 15 cm for a 60 cm target and 20 cm for an 80 cm target. Inner rings on Forest Round targets for Barebow and Olympic division competitions have diameters of 7.5 cm for a 20 cm target, 15 cm for a 40 cm target, 22.5 cm for a 60 cm target and 30 cm for an 80 cm target face. Suggested target faces include bear, boar, deer, fox, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, wolves, wolverines and woodcocks, among others.

- 105 - 4. FITA HISTORY

4.01 ARCHERY IN HISTORY Archery is one of the oldest arts still practiced. From its first development in ancient times until the 1500s, the bow was man's constant companion and has been the most widely used of all weapons during recorded history. Its historical importance is confirmed by the number of contemporary family names directly derived from archery: Archer, Arrowsmith, Bowman, Boyer, Butts, Fletcher, Stringer and Yeoman, to name some of the most common. After the bow's replacement by firearms as a weapon of war, archery became a favored sport, thus attesting to its continuous practice throughout history. Archery ranks in importance as a cultural advance with the development of speech and the art of making fire, according to the ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA. The use of the bow first appears in Egyptian artworks and is reported in folklore from more than 5,500 years ago although its invention probably dates to the Stone Age. English literature honors the longbow for famous victories in the battles of Crecy, Agincourt and Poitiers. In fact, the bow was the principal weapon of national defense in for centuries. Ghengis Khan conquered much of the known world, employing the short, powerful bows of his Mongol hordes. For Native Americans, the bow was both a means of subsistence and existence before and during the days of English and later American colonization. Many of the British monarchs, including Queen Victoria, practiced archery. Henry VIII gained considerable renown as a bowman; organized competitions in archery for sport began during his reign. He helped

- 106 - FITA HISTORY found the first archery ``club,'' the Fraternity of St. George, in 1537. As the then-Prince of Wales in 1787, King George IV established the ``prince's lengths'' (targets at distances of 60, 80 and 100 yards) and the ``prince's reckoning'' (values for various target rings of 9, 7, 5, 3 and 1 point). The first known organized competition in archery was held at Finsbury, England in 1583 and included 3,000 participants! The first international competitions in archery began with Anglo-French matches around 1900 featuring both target and flight distance shooting. Archery first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1900 and was contested again in 1904, 1908 and 1920. In those four Games, it was possible for an archer to compete in numerous events and win several medals. Hubert van Innis (BEL) is the most decorated archer in Olympic history, winning six gold medals and three silvers in 1900 and 1920. Archery was re-introduced to the Olympic program in 1972 with an individual event for men and for women and and Doreen Wilber of the USA captured the gold medals. Team competition was added to the medal program in Seoul in 1988. The international governing body for archery, FITA, was founded in 1931, and in that year the first world championships were held in Lvov, Poland with four nations participating. Today, the FITA has more than 100 member associations around the world and holds its world championships in alternate years. New championships recently introduced include the world field championships, which became a permanent feature in 1969 and the world indoor and world junior championships, both of which started in 1991.

4.02 ARCHERY IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES Archery has been a vital part of the Olympic Games in the earliest days, and from 1972 to the present. A variety of events were contested from 1900-1920, then the sport went into hiatus until the Games of the XX Olympiad in Munich in 1972. Thanks to these efforts, new Member Associations in the Central African Republic and Pakistan have been formed and DTAC assistance missions have either been completed or are now in preparation for both countries. A heavy schedule of technical training seminars has been completed in cooperation with the International Olympic Committee's ``Olympic Solidarity'' program. These courses have been organized in American Samoa, Aruba, Bhutan, Brazil, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Mexico, Mongolia, New Zealand, El Salvador and Thailand. Future assistance programs are now being planned for Algeria, Angola, Croatia, Morocco, Russia and Trinidad & Tobago, among others. New cooperation within specific geographic areas will be realized through the assistance of coordinators appointed by the new regional archery unions in the Americas (CopanArco) and in the European area (EMAU).

Easton was re-elected as FITA President for a second four-year term in 1993.
