Robert Barclay Academy Review Education for a changing world

Issue 23 Thursday, 29th March 2018 Dear all, Dates for your Diary It’s extremely hard to believe that we have come to the end of another term. As is often the case at the end of term, it 18th April Year 12/13 Get Exam Ready - A has been an extremely busy week. On Level Literature (Sixth Form Centre) Monday, the Year 11 students received 6.00-7.00pm their final progress grade reports. We 19th April Year 9 Parents’ Evening (Hall) have been really pleased with these 3.30-7.00pm reports as the overwhelming majority of students have made significant progress 20th April Year 13 Trip to Saffron Walden in the recent Pre GCSE exams when County High School - Pre Exam compared to the Trial Exams back in Revision 9.15-3.00pm November. Over the Easter Holiday, staff 23rd April Year 11 GCSE Drama Visiting will be continuing to provide their support Examiner to students through our Easter Revision A Level Art Exams Commence School. I would like to thank those staff Some of our Year 7s on the LEAD Day trip to Tower of London 25th April Dance Assessed Unit 3 who continue to go above and beyond to 3.00-4.30pm support our students. 26th April Year 7/8/9 Junior Maths Challenge On Tuesday, it was the turn of the Year 10s to get their Progress Reports. Alongside the A Level Photography Exams reports, the Year 10s also received their Trial Exam grade for their GCSE RE exam (as these Commence students will be sitting the actual GCSE RE this summer). This was followed by Year 10 Parents’ Evening so that teachers could feedback in more detail to both students and parents. Having read the Year 10 reports, we have identified that there is some `catch up’ work for some students to do in the Summer Term and over the Summer Holiday to ensure that by the start of Year 11, they are all up to date and that there are no gaps.

On Wednesday evening, Mr Creasey delivered a very informative evening to parents of Year 11 on how best they can support their child with their GCSEs. This evening included sharing with parents the latest research on the latest memory and revision techniques as well as how best to support their child with dealing with anxiety and stress. School Timetable

In whole school assemblies this week, I discussed with the students the meaning of Easter. I Week commencing : discussed taking the opportunity to use the Easter break to reflect on new beginnings and new opportunities. I also asked the students to reflect on what new changes they wanted to bring about themselves for the start of the new term. Monday, 16th April

Finally, today students have been undertaking LEAD Day 2. I had the pleasure of supporting the Year 9 students where we spent the day at Anglia Ruskin University. The aim of the day was to WEEK 1 introduce students to life at University and in doing so raise their aspirations. More details about the various LEAD days will be shared in the next RBA Review.

Wishing you all a fantastic Easter Break. Just a reminder that we start back at school on Monday 16th April at the normal time. The holiday breaks are always a good opportunity to wash those blazers and ties and to also replenish your child’s equipment (pens, pencils etc). More importantly, the holiday breaks are a great opportunity for some quality family time, so enjoy!

Last week students went to in Harpenden for a Careers Fayre. Students behaved impeccably, and were commended on their mature attitude and interest in the companies at the event. It was clear that students had done their research on the opportunities available to them, and they spent the hour making wise choices of who to talk to. Many students are now more clear on the type of opportunities available to them post-18. One student was given a business card, and told to keep in touch; Four students have signed up to our Academy Trust to be updated on what is available in terms of teacher training.

We had a fantastic afternoon out, it wasn't all about biscuits and freebies! We have been invited back next year to attend the whole days event.

Mrs Tweddell and Mr Passarelli, who accompanied the trip, are both very proud of how the students conducted themselves. The coach driver commented on how polite our young people are.

As you by now know, we have invested in an excellent platform in science called Doddle (accessible from the school dashboard or www.doddlelearn.co.uk). On this platform, we have resources such as quizzes and PowerPoints to help catch up on work missed or revise from at all key stages. In preparation for the upcoming GCSEs, we have also uploaded onto Doddle some “know-it” PowerPoints, which can also be located in the resources or browse tab.

Reminder for GCSE pupils that you can still purchase revision guides for science from the school at a reduced price, £5 for any single science, and £8.99 for trilogy science books. Nieves Guijarro Science Teacher
