OTHER OPINION Forgotten nursing homes ravaged by covid-19

s hospitals in New York City grew overwhelmed with coronavirus patients earlier this spring, ANew Yorkers began a daily ritual. They stood on their porch steps, their balconies, their sidewalks and clapped, sang and played music at 7 p.m. when hospital workers changed shifts. They shouted, “Thank you!” through the echoing high-rises of Manhattan. Some of those appreciation rituals continue today. Peter Marks, theater critic for the Washington Post, in an April column described the outpouring as an ova- tion: “The tumultuous reception accorded the hospital workers, though, is no cry of despair. It is an impromp- tu curtain call, of multitudinous thank-yous, from a vast audience rooting for everyday heroes. It’s New Yorkers joining in a chorus, singing out in solidarity: ‘We are here.’” Yet nursing home workers, arguably dealing with equally if not more difficult and treacherous cir- cumstances during the coronavirus pandemic, have not been equally recognized. Nurses, nursing aides, housekeepers, food prep staff and administrators have been quietly starting and ending their shifts, and double shifts, without the same attention and appreci- ation. With brother Curtis back at her side at Tiburon Golf Club, Lexi Thompson shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s CME Group Tour Championship. Curtis, a Korn Ferry Tour player, also caddied for his sister in 2018 when she won the season-ending event. On Thursday after early morning rain, Thompson birdied five of the first seven holes. She played the next nine holes in even par with a birdie and a bogey, then birdied the final two holes.
