W, 20-6 BLACKSBURG, Va. – Unlike basketball and soccer, there is no such thing as an assist on Sept. 26, 1942 NA Greenville, S.C. W, 7-6 offense in the game of football. But for its role in a 24-7 victory over Furman at Lane Stadium, Nov. 9, 1940 NA Blacksburg, Va. W, 38-21 Virginia Tech’s defense certainly deserves to be credited with a couple. Nov. 4, 1939 NA Blacksburg, Va. W, 20-7 The defense didn’t score in this one like it did last week when cornerback Stephan Virgil accounted for eight of Tech’s 22 points against East Carolina, but it definitely played the role of point guard during a third quarter that saw the Hokies (1-1) turn a paltry 3-0 halftime lead into a comfortable 24-0 cushion before giving up a late score in fourth. After sputtering into the locker room with only place-kicker Dustin Keys’ first collegiate – a 22-yarder with just 29 ticks left on the second-quarter clock – to its credit, the Hokies’ offense finally came to life in the third period. TODAY IN TECH FOOTBALL HISTORY And almost upon request, the Hokies made some big plays on both sides of the ball during Games Played on Sept. 12: Seven Overall Record: 4-3 Home: 3-2 the third quarter. Tech’s first touchdown pass of the season came courtesy of redshirt senior Conference Record: 0-0 Away: 1-1 quarterback Sean Glennon, who eluded two Furman rushers on a 3rd-and-6 from the Furman Date Rank Opponent Score 10 and side-armed a pass under the reach of another Paladin to Lewis, who hauled in an Saturday, 2009 14/NR Marshall W, 52-10 impressive catch while taking a big hit in the end zone. Thursday, 2002 11/16 Marshall W, 46-21 Keys’ PAT gave the Hokies a 10-0 lead following the six-play, 64-yard drive that was fueled by Saturday, 1998 NR/NR at Clemson W, 37-0 a 50-yard scamper by sophomore quarterback Tyrod Taylor three plays earlier. Saturday, 1992 NR/NR at East Carolina L, 27-30 It was then that Tech’s defense stepped up and gave the offense a hand. On Furman’s Saturday, 1987 NR/10 Clemson L, 10-22 opening play following the Lewis touchdown, Hokie whip linebacker jarred the Saturday, 1981 NR/NR Richmond W, 28-12 ball loose from Paladin fullback Brantley Kendall, and free safety Kam Chancellor fell on it at Saturday, 1970 NR/NR Virginia L, 0-7 the Furman 31-yard line. The Hokies went right back to Lewis, and he collected a 1-yard rush and a 7-yard catch on a Taylor pass before breaking loose for a 23-yard touchdown run. Keys’ Total 201-102 PAT made it 17-0 in Tech’s favor, and it came just 1:25 after the first score. Average 29-15 The Tech defense struck again two plays later when Virgil stepped in front of a Jordan Sorrells Most Points Scored 52/30 (2009/1992) pass, intercepting it and returning it 18 yards to the Furman 9. Redshirt freshman tailback Fewest Points Scored 0/0 (1970/1998) Darren Evans then turned in carries of six and three yards, with the latter getting into the end Shutouts By 1/1 (1998/1970) zone for his second rushing score in as many games. After Keys chipped in the extra point, Tech Largest Margin of Victory 42/12 (2009/1987) had put up 21 points in a matter of 2:29 and led 24-0 with just over six minutes remaining in Smallest Margin of Victory 16/3 (1981/1992) the third quarter. Furman (1-1) mustered just 34 rushing yards in the game and managed its only touchdown with 6:02 remaining in the contest against Tech’s second-team defense, a 17-yard connection from Sorrells to Chris Truss that capped a six-play, 72-yard drive. Virginia Tech has a 190-67 record during the streak, averaging 33.8 points in the wins and 19.5 points in the losses. The Hokies have only on six occasions delayed extending the streak until the fourth quarter or overtime. The last time came in 2014 in an overtime loss at Wake Forest. The latest Tech scored its first points in a game was in overtime in 2014 at Wake Forest (a 0-0 tie after four quarters). The latest in a regulation game was with 1:30 left in Tech’s game versus Miami also in 2014. Here’s a look at the six occasions. (* — in Sugar Bowl in ; ^ — Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando):

Only twice did Tech’s lone score come in the fourth quarter of a game: 2005 when Marcus Vick scored on a 5-yard run with 8:06 left in a 27-7 loss and in 2014 when Isaiah Ford caught a 14-yard pass from Mark Leal with 1:30 left in a 30-6 loss and once it came in overtime, last year at Wake Forest on a Joey Slye field goal. The marketing campaign for the game took another step when track general manager Jerry Caldwell, NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Ty Dillon and Derek Vaughan, an engineer with Richard Childress Racing – and a Virginia Tech graduate (mechanical engineering, class of 1998) – along with other BMS officials came to Blacksburg on Aug. 11 of this year to promote the game. The group toured Tech’s facilities, met with athletics department per- sonnel, including AD Whit Babcock and head football coach Frank Beamer, and answered questions from the media. No. 1 OHIO STATE 42 VIRGINIA TECH 2124 Lane Stadium • Blacksburg, Va. • September 7, 2015 • Attendance: 65,632 BLACKSBURG, Va. –Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones threw two touchdown passes and rushed for 99 yards, as the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes rallied from a small halftime deficit to defeat Virginia Tech 42-24 at Lane Stadium on Monday night. Jones had a touchdown pass and a touchdown run in the second half, helping the Buckeyes avenge last season’s 35-21 loss to the Hokies in Columbus, Ohio. Behind Jones, Ohio State amassed 572 yards of total offense. Worse than the loss, Hokies quarterback Michael Brewer fractured his collarbone in the third quarter. He will undergo surgery on Tuesday and will miss at least 4-8 weeks. Tech trailed 14-0, but rallied to take a 17-14 lead at halftime, scoring three second-quarter touchdowns. A 51-yard touchdown pass from Brewer to Sam Rogers got the Hokies on the board, and Tech cut the lead to 14-10 on Joey Slye’s 46-yard field goal. Tech then took the lead on a 1-yard pass from Brewer to tight end Ryan Malleck with 15 seconds left in the first half. Ohio State, though, quickly grabbed the lead in the second half, scoring on a 54-yard pass from Jones to Braxton Miller, a quarterback who missed last season because of an injury and was moved to receiver this past spring. On the ensuing possession, Brewer took a shot while attempting a pass and had to be helped from the field. After Brewer’s injury, the Hokies didn’t amount much in the way of offense behind untested backup Brenden Motley. Tech amassed just 77 yards of offense after Brewer left the game, though Motley did throw a touchdown pass late in the game to Isaiah Ford. Miller gave the Buckeyes a 28-17 lead on a 53-yard touchdown run with 2:05 left in the third quarter. Jones’ 10-yard touchdown run with 12:26 left in the game essentially put the game away. Jones completed 9 of 18 for 186 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 122 yards on 11 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown run, and Miller rushed for 62 yards on six carries and a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 72 yards and a score. Brewer completed 11 of 16 for 156 yards and two touchdowns for the Hokies. Motley completed 4 of 9 for 36 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. GAME NOTES • Five true freshman saw action vs. Ohio State •Tech sold out its first home game since the for the Hokies. (10/5/13) vs. UNC s (attendance of 65,632)

• Michael Brewer had a career-long 51 yard pass • Brendan Motley set career-highs in passing for a touchdown to Sam Rogers attempts (9), completions (4), yards (36) and his first TD.
