Thank you to everyone that turned out for the photo in front of the Superfluity Shop. Also, thank you Sandy for having a 1/2 price sale and refreshments for those who participated.

In the above photo, we are celebrating the donation of $1.5 Million by the Auxiliary to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation over the next 5 years, toward the new build.

The newly painted wall at the Superfluity shop Features a tribute to the Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary Society Programs we love to support.

Baby Love The Baby Layette Program was started a number of years ago by a local church group. Recently support from this group was discontinued and as the need was still growing, the Auxiliary was asked to consider providing basics for babies born to needy mothers giving birth in Peace Arch Hospital. Requests come from Rhonda James (Patient Care Co-ordinator) or maternity staff. Our purpose is to provide basics for layettes which are color appropriate. Layettes includes: diapers, onesies, outfits, sleepers, jacket or sweater and hat, a blanket, bibs, socks and wash cloths.

Caring Hearts In February 2019, The Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary Society introduced their Caring Hearts Fund. This annual $5,000 fund embraces the importance of patient centered care. It provides designated staff the ability to access resources for patients who need additional support to overcome any barriers to their timely discharge and transition from the hospital to the community or facility.

Tea from the Heart The PAH Auxiliary Society Tea from the Heart program was initiated in 2010 after a traumatic event and a need to offer comfort to staff. The Auxiliary program has grown over the years to honor happy or sad events including retirements, after unsettling events, departmental/organization changes and difficult times. It is an opportunity to create a tranquil atmosphere in the midst of busy and uncertain times by offering an extraordinary opportunity for staff to meet or debrief over a cup of tea which has been brewed in a tea pot served in a china cup.

E.R. Comfort Kits Coming to the is often a stressful time for people brought on by a sudden need for medical attention. Unlike a planned procedure, most people are not able to bring any personal items. The kit the Auxiliary provides consists of toiletries and offers the opportunity to brush teeth, comb your hair, put on lip balm or hand lotion. This seemingly small gesture plays an enormous role in comforting patients and their families during a vulnerable time Superfluity Shop News

Renovations and new craft section We created a new craft section which has been well received. We plan on expanding it and adding in Christ- mas Craft items in September for the crafters to get started on their Christmas Projects. The Supe Shop will be going through the Christmas items to see what we have, the goal will be to stock the store of these craft items and share some with groups as available. Summer Student Our Summer Student was a great success. Leanne was a hardworking and sweet addition to our summer staff. She was a quick learner and did well at any task we gave her, with many volunteers being away Leanne’s presence here was a huge help. Volunteers embraced her and enjoyed her being here. Leanne thanked us, she said “Everyone here is so nice and I had lots of fun”. We will miss her. I highly recommend that we bring on a YMCA Summer Exchange Student again next year. Volunteers Many volunteers were away for August, so we scrambled to have all areas covered. Many thanks to the volunteers that did extra shifts. We have been fortunate to have a few new male volunteers come on board in August. This will be helpful with the electrical bench and helping with the garbage and recycling. Christmas Volunteer Appreciation Lynne Quigley spoke to me regarding the Christmas Tea that is usually held at the hospital, due to meeting rooms not being available the thought was that we could have the tea at the Supe Shop and we would include the “Wrap it up for the Holi- day’s” volunteer appreciation. I believe this is very doable and I have included an unfinished sample of a poster that I have started with some of the details. The event would be held on Monday, December 2nd. Christmas at the Supe Shop We will be trying something new this year with all the of the Christmas items that are donated to the shop. We will not be holding an outside Christmas sale other than what we bring to the Elks Hall sale. Christmas will start coming out mid September starting with items that customers would appreciate having earlier in the year i.e. Christmas craft items, Lights for outside of the house etc. Gradually we will introduce items into the store over October and November, with the possibility of have a special event at the shop on either a Sunday or Monday. More details to come. Groups that would like items from the Supe Shop for their sales and endeavours Superfluity Shop News continued

As we move into the fall, I know groups are going to need a few things from the shop. I ask that one leader from each group be in charge and that that person name is given to me so that we can work together. This helps confusion with conflicting ideas, and allows us at the shop to better coordinate items taken. It has been a pleasure working with Sandy from Flower Power each week when she comes to pick up items. As well as Gail from Breakaway Bays and Marg from the Sunset group, we have worked out a wonderful system. Customer and Volunteer Comments I am truly grateful for all the customer and volunteers’ positive comments. Customers are loving the shop with the changes. I had one customer stop me to say what a good job I am doing, she hears comments from volunteers about how happy they are that the shop is clean and organized and they like volunteering here. People are happy that they can get around easily and find items. The music has been a big hit, one customer said “we come here just because the music is so great”. Well I think they also shop here too! Volunteers come in to work and look to see the new changes weekly, embracing the change and improve- ments. I want to thank all the volunteers for their hard work, dedication, participation, and kindness. Donation from Purdy’s Chocolates We were fortunate to receive a large donation of seasonal items including Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Chi- nese New Year, baskets and baker’s racks. These are now for sale in the shop. New changes at the shop We have added a craft section which has been very well received. Also, we are starting to put out Christmas items for sale. The second wall graphics have been installed. One of the pictures was the one taken outside of the shop recently. Sandy Lucas
