The Institute for Advanced Study is devoted to the encouragement, support and patronage of learning—of science, in the old, broad, undiffer- entiated sense of the word. The Institute partakes of the character both of a university and of a research institute; but it also differs in signifi- cant ways from both. It is unlike a university, for instance, in its small size—its academic mem- bership at any one time numbers only a little over a hundred. It is unlike a university in that it has no formal curriculum, no scheduled courses of instruction, no commitment that all branches of learning be represented in its faculty and members. It is unlike a research institute in that its pur- poses are broader, that it supports many separate fields of study, that, with one exception, it main- tains no laboratories; and above all in that it wel- comes temporary members, whose intellectual develop- ment and growth are one of its principal purposes, ^he Institute, in short, is devoted to learning, in the double sense of the continued education of the individual, and of the intellectual enterprise on which he is embarked. The Institute for Advanced Study was founded in 1930, by a gift of Mr. Louis Bamberger and his sister, Mrs, Felix Fuld, The Founders entrusted the general supervision and furthering of the Institute's purposes to a Board of Trustees of fif- teen members, and to a Director elected by them, who should have primary responsibility for its academic affairs. -

A Hat Girl’s Legacy When Marlene Crupi found Jason Downer’s top hat hidden under tree roots during the traditional “hat hunt” for Milwaukee Downer freshmen, she earned more than the distinction of being “First Hat Girl” for the Green Class of 1955. She was propelled into a leadership role that would last a lifetime. Milwaukee-Downer tradition calls for hat girls (each class had four) to exemplify the attributes of leadership in their academic and personal lives and to serve as class leaders. Marlene embraced this leadership role socially and academically. Professors such as Gladys Calbrick mentored her, while bolstering her self-confidence — providing momentum for her academic success at Downer and in graduate school. Marlene was delighted to be welcomed warmly into a supportive alumnae group who encouraged her service as an alumna. She responded by assuming a variety of volunteer roles, eventually serving as president of the Alumnae Association at the time of the consolidation in 1964. -

Watson Foundation awarded forty fellowships to college seniors to pursue their unique passion or dream for a year of independent exploration and travel outside the United States. In addition to their academic achievements, these newly-announced Fellows have been leaders on- and off-campus. They include: NGO board members, EMTs, volunteer firemen and forest rangers, radio producers and filmmakers, published authors, student body officers, varsity athletes, entrepreneurs, environmental educators, community volunteers, a volunteer parole officer, and a tintinologist. Their accomplishments include: founding an artist collective with two non-profit record labels, lobbying for environmental organizations at UNFCCC negotiations in Copenhagen, creating summer- and after- school programs for inner-city youth, and executing self-designed humanitarian/developmental projects in the developing world. The forty TJW fellows come from twenty-three states and three foreign countries and exhibit a broad diversity of academic specialty, socio-economic background, and life experience. As the forty-second class of Watson Fellows, they’ll traverse seventy-six countries, exploring topics from policewomen in the Islamic world to medicinal plant markets, from geothermal energy to open-fire cooking, from large-format photography to creek boating, from recycled buses in the Global South to the use of hip hop in holistic healing. -
