Schubert (1913-2000) La Dra. Schubert fué miembro del Comité Editorial de la Flora de Veracruz durante 13 años (1986-1999). Fué una entusiasta colaboradora y contribuyó en los tratamientos referentes a Dioscoreaceae (53) y Begoniaceae (100). Los editores de la Flora de Veracruz reconocen la magnífica obra botáni­ ca de la Dra. Schubert consistente en 94 trabajos científicos, entre los que destacan estudios de numerosos taxa mexicanos de los géneros Desmodium, Dioscorea y Begonia. Recibió su grado de Ph. D. en el Radcliffe College (1941) con una tesis sobre el género Desmodium (Leguminosae). Colaboró con M. Fernald en el Gray Herbarium y como recipiente de la Guggenheim Fellowship estudió Desmodium en herbarios europeos, donde fué consultora botánica para las Floras de Congo, Ruanda y Burundi. Trabajó con el USDA en la búsqueda de alcaloides medicinales en Dioscorea de Norte y Centroamérica por lo que colectó en Cuba, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Panamá, México y Brasil hasta 1961. En 1962 ingresó al Amold Arboretum de la Universidad de Harvard don­ de fué nombrada "Investigadora Emérita" en 1983. Entre diversas distinciones recibidas destacan la medalla de plata de la Massachusetts Horticultural Society y el premio Eva Kenworthy Gray de la Sociedad Americana de Begonias. Fué editora del Journal of the Amold Arboretum por varias décadas y Miembro Honorario de la Sociedad Botánica de México. Falleció el pasado 14 de agosto del 2000 en Brookhaven, Massachusetts. De acuerdo a su deseo, sus cenizas fueron esparcidas en el bosque del Cementerio Mt. Aubum, donde Asa Gray y otros destacados botánicos de la Universidad de Harvard han sido enterrados. Hojas simples, enteras, dísticas. Inflorescencia terminal, erecta o péndula, pedunculada, el raquis erecto o sinuoso, las espatas dísticas a helicoidales, ciatiformes o cimbiformes, las brácteas envolventes; flores hermafroditas, asimétricas; estambres 5, ditécicos, el estaminodio único; ova­ rio infero, los óvulos solitarios en cada lóculo, la placentación basal o axilar; estilo solitario. Fruto una drupa; semillas 1-3. Familia monotípica, en la que el género He/iconiatiene una distribución tropical y subtropical en México, Centroamérica y Sudamérica, y una especie amplia­ mente distribuida hasta el Pacífico Sur. La simetría invertida de las flores (el sépalo medio es adaxial y opuesto a un estaminodio) hace de Heliconia un géne­ ro único comparado con géneros similares con cinco estambres. En México existen 16 especies de las cuáles se reconocen 9 para Veracruz. El llamativo colorido de sus inflorescencias las hace atractivas como orna­ mentales, mientras que sus hojas son utilizadas para envolver alimentos. Los polinizadores son generalmente colibríes. Se propagan en forma asexual. Las Heliconaceae se han separado de las Musaceae por presentar flores hermafroditas, hojas disticas, sin látex, frutos capsulares o esquizocárpicos, la simetría floral invertida y el sépalo medio adaxial. En cambio, la familia Musaceae presenta flores unisexuales funcionales, hojas dispuestas en espiral, con látex, frutos car­ nosos y el sépalo medio es abaxial. 2 FLORA DE VERACRUZ Referencias ANDERSSON, L. 1981. This species is not commonly cultivated, but related species in section Iris are economically important horticultural plants. The complete plastid genome is reported for I. gatesii based on data generated using the Illumina HiSeq platform and is compared to genomes of 16 species selected from across the monocotyledons. This Iris genome is the only known plastid genome available for order Asparagales that is not from Orchidaceae. The I. gatesii plastid genome, unlike orchid genomes, has little gene loss and rearrangement and is likely to be similar to other genomes from Asparagales.

    terra australis 30 Terra Australis reports the results of archaeological and related research within the south and east of Asia, though mainly Australia, New Guinea and island Melanesia — lands that remained terra australis incognita to generations of prehistorians. Its subject is the settlement of the diverse environments in this isolated quarter of the globe by peoples who have maintained their discrete and traditional ways of life into the recent recorded or remembered past and at times into the observable present. Since the beginning of the series, the basic colour on the spine and cover has distinguished the regional distribution of topics as follows: ochre for Australia, green for New Guinea, red for South-East Asia and blue for the Pacific Islands. Hojas opuestas, dísticas, amplexicaules, sin estípulas, con un pecíolo corto o largo y una lámina entera, normalmente de gran tamaño, a veces ras- gada de forma irregular, con un nervio medio bien destacado y numerosos nervios laterales finos y paralelos. Inflorescencias terminales, erectas o colgantes, con brácte- as espatiformes (brácteas cincinales), espaciadas, bellamente coloreadas, dispuestas de forma dística o en espiral sobre un raquis central. Cada bráctea sustenta un núme- ro variable de flores que se disponen en una cima compacta; flores bisexuales, zigo- morfas, sustentadas por bractéolas carinadas (brácteas florales), con un perianto for- mado por 6 tépalos en dos series, (3 sépalos y 3 pétalos), cinco de los cuales están completamente unidos formando un tubo y el sexto se halla completamente libre. El androceo consta de 5 estambres fértiles y generalmente 1 estaminodio petaloide, con los filamentos unidos a los pétalos y las anteras ditecas, dehiscentes por hendiduras longitudinales. El gineceo posee un ovario ínfero, trilocular y con un rudimento seminal por lóculo, un estilo delgado y un estigma capitado o trilobulado. El fruto es drupáceo, generalmente de tonos azulados o metálicos, separándose en 3 pirenos carnosos que contienen 1 semilla. Las flores son polinizadas por colibríes o por murciélagos, según la zona geográfica.

Steinhauser Research Associate, Allyn Museum of Entomology; Apartado Aereo 20433, Cali, Colombia INTRODUCTION Six years (1967-1973) of collecting and studying butterflies in EI Salvador in­ dicated an unexpectedly rich fauna for such a small, densely populated country. Published information on the fauna of EI Salvador is scarce; that of Lepidoptera especially so. In discussions with other local collectors, principally Miguel and Francisco Serrano, we decided to summarize what was known and publish the data as lists of the different families of Rhopalocera; the Serranos to work with the Papi­ lionoidea and I the Hesperioidea. To date this has resulted in the publication of an illustrated and keyed list of the Papilionidae (Serrano & Serrano, 1972) and descrip­ tions of new species of Hesperiidae and Nymphalidae with notes on others (Stein­ hauser, 1972, 1974). The principal general sources consulted were Godman & Salvin (1879-1901), Draudt (in Seitz, 1921-1924) and Evans (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955). Godman & Salvin generally mentioned specific localities for the material they studied, but referred to EI Salvador for only one species of Hesperiidae. Draudt gave geographic ranges rather than specific localities and I found no references to EI Salvador. Evans, who carefully recorded type localities and country of origin for all material in the British Museum (Natural History), was the principal source for published records. I did not have access to most of the works of Lindsey, Skinner, Williams and Bell, thus any El Salvador records they may contain unfortunately are not included.
