  • Colin Linden – Blow Biography
Colin Linden – bLOW Biography “Got a coin in my pocket heavy and gold/It don’t own me I need to let it go/Cause having is wanting/Desire can make you weep” – “bLOW” Colin Linden’s tale is the stuff of legend, the kind told in the Coen brothers’ O Brother Where Art Thou or Inside Llewyn Davis, both of which featured his guitar playing on the soundtracks. That film would begin with an 11-year-old meeting his musical idol Howlin’ Wolf at a matinee show in his native Toronto, accompanied by his mom, who took a picture of the two during a nearly two-hour long conversation before the gig, the legendary bluesman idling over coffee and cigarettes. “I’m an old man now, and I won’t be around much longer,” Wolf told him. “It’s up to you to carry it on.” Linden still carries that frayed photograph in his wallet, along with a Sears 5/8” socket wrench in his pocket to play slide guitar. He has taken Wolf’s plea seriously, performing since he was 12 years old, leaving home as a teenager to travel the south at the invitation of Mississippi Sheiks delta blues guitarist Sam Chatmon which took him to Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Memphis and Hollandale, Mississippi, meeting and visiting the sites of his heroes – Brownie McGhee, Muddy Waters, Sippie Wallace, Tampa Red, Blind John Davis, the Rev. Robert Wilkins, Sleepy John Estes and Son House, visiting the landmarks and juke joints, many of which he’s played in during the course of a 45-year career producing and playing blues and roots music.

  • Colin Linden
Colin Linden Colin Kendall Linden (born 16 April 1960) is a Canadian musician, songwriter and record producer. He has worked with a wide variety of artists, including Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams, T-Bone Burnett, Colin James, Leon Redbone, Rita Chiarelli, Chris Thomas King, the Band, and Bob Dylan. Linden is a versatile guitarist, both on acoustic and electric guitars, specializing in slide guitar and country blues and ragtime fingerpicking. He frequently collaborates with country and folk performers. He is also a member, with Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson, of the group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Early years Linden was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada When he was still an infant, his family moved to White Plains, New York. The ten-year-old Linden heard rock performers in New York venues, such as Van Morrison, the Flying Burrito Brothers, James Taylor, John Mayall, Johnny Winter and Taj Mahal 1970s When the family moved back to Toronto, Linden became interested in performers such as Taj Mahal, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Howlin' Wolf. When Howlin' Wolf played at Toronto’s Colonial Tavern, the then-11-year-old Linden spent three hours talking with the elder bluesman. A young Linden began performing at a local coffee house, the Fiddler’s Green Coffee House, singing and strumming a guitar. By 1973, Linden began learning how to finger pick. When Linden met David Wilcox, Linden decided to learn how to play slide guitar. Wilcox gave 140 blues albums to young Linden, to help Linden to learn about blues styles. Paul Mills, the producer of Sylvia Tyson’s Touch the Earth show, at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and an outlet on CBC Radio for acoustic roots music, booked Linden in 1975 .

  • Music Notes Delta State University Department of Music Fall 2006 Volume 4, Issue 1
Music Notes Delta State University Department of Music Fall 2006 Volume 4, Issue 1 Welcome to the 4th edition of the DSU Music Department Newsletter. Currently, in Northern Mississippi, we are experiencing the worst drought in six years. Even though the earth is parched, the thirst for music is great in the Delta. Our freshman theory classes have the largest enrollment in many years. Our traditional music degree programs remain strong, but we are also attracting new students for our sound recording technology degree. DSU is also pleased to welcome Tricia Walker as the new director of the Delta Music Institute. Dr. Shelley Collins, Assistant Professor of Flute, joined our department this fall, replacing Keith Pettway who retired after 26 years. She has enthusiastically tackled several different classes and is already recruiting flute students for next year. Dr. Collins, as well as any of our other studio teachers, would welcome a visit from former or prospective students. As we begin a very active year of recitals and concerts (please look at the Calendar of Events), I would like to draw special attention to Dr. Ed Bahr’s recital on October 17th. As some of you may know, this will be Dr. Bahr’s farewell recital as he will retire in May. Dr. Bahr has served our department for over 20 years and has helped to mold hundreds of students through his teaching and guidance. As always, the music faculty remains extremely productive, from chairing various committees, to performing around the country. Drs. Karen Fosheim and Mark Butler have just presented an adaptation of Prokoviev’s Peter and the Wolf to hundreds of school children in Greenville.

  • Sugarcane Jane Bio Word Doc 2017
! Sugarcane Jane “Organic Music at its Finest” Sugarcane Jane, the Alabama Gulf Coast-based husband and wife duo has amassed an extremely loyal following. Anthony and Savana Lee Crawford purvey what they proudly call “Organic Music at its Finest.” Rich, homegrown, and natural, their brand of Americana draws from a deep well of roots influences, interwoven with inflections of gospel, country, jazz, and rock. Listeners can expect mostly acoustic sounds, and some of the freshest-sounding vocal harmonies they will ever hear. Both virtuosos in their own right, Anthony is a songwriter who plays acoustic guitar, fiddle, and a bass drum (which he plays while strumming his six-string) and Savana Lee deftly dances between rhythm guitar and snare drum. Multi-instrumentalist Anthony Crawford is known in most circles as a sideman to the stars. Over the course of the last 25 years, he has performed with Neil Young, Sonny James, Steve Winwood, Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, and Rodney Crow- ell, and has written / co-written songs recorded by Steve Winwood, Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Rogers, Pegi Young, Lee Greenwood, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, to name a few. Yet, even with his history of working with heavyweights, Crawford feels Sugarcane Jane – his musical venture with multi-instrumentalist wife Savana Lee Crawford, is his life’s calling. Sugarcane Jane’s newest studio album, Ladders and Edges – an album they con- ceived with the legendary Colin Linden, Canadian musician, songwriter and record producer, musical director of Nashville, and member of the group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. The album is being re- leased via Crawford's Admiral Bean Records on May 26, 2017.

  • Chris Thomas King
CHRIS THOMAS KING King was born on October 14, 1964, in Baton Rouge. His father, Tabby Thomas, is a locally prominent bluesman who owned a club called Tabby's Blues Box, which opened in 1979 and closed in 2004 following Tabby’s retirement. As a result, King, started early toward his musical future; even as a youngster he was well Known as RocKin' Tabby's son and a child genius. While frequenting his father's club he performed with the late Silas Hogan, Guitar Kelly and Clarence Edwards, three masters of swamp blues. By sixth grade, King was learning to play the trumpet and later traveling as a rhythm guitar player of famous musicians liKe Lowell Folsom and Joe Tex. As he matured in the musical setting of New Orleans area blues culture, King was encouraged to experiment and develop his own style. Because each blues musician had a unique playing and singing style, he was discouraged from singing others' songs or even playing the way they did. He told Lisa Simeone on National Public Radio's WeeKend Edition, "They would never sit me down and say, 'Well, this is how it goes.' They ... told me don't sing their songs ... 'Find your own song and sing that.'" At some time around 1980, while King was still in his teens, he toured in Europe with a group of Louisiana artists. After returning to the United States he produced a demo recording playing all the instruments himself, which led to a deal with Arhoolie Records. King's debut album, The Beginning, appeared in 1986 and featured King on vocals, bass, and guitar.

  • Issue Number 55 February 2003
Gavin’s Woodpile – The Bruce Cockburn Newsletter Edited by Daniel Keebler Issue Number 55 February 2003 The Bruce Cockburn back catalogue - The Deluxe Editions Observations by Richard Hoare The first batch of six CDs were released in late 2002: Canada - True North – 19th November 2002. USA - Rounder/True North - 19th November 2002. UK - True North via Revolver - 16th December 2002. All these CDs have been digitally remastered by Peter J Moore @ The E Room, Toronto, 2002. The original analogue masters have been digitally transferred using a proprietary state of the art Ampex ATR 102 at 24 bits / 96Khz resolution and processed using Sonic Solutions NoNoise technology. The deluxe editions are distinguished externally from the previous CD releases by the inclusion of O card slipcases. Each CD booklet attempts to reproduce the artwork and information from the relevant original LP release plus additional photography and an essay. In 1997 Nicholas Jenning’s book Before The Goldrush was released in Canada. It documents the musical breeding ground that was Yorkville, Toronto in the 1960s. The equivalent of Greenwich Village, New York or Haight Ashbury, San Francisco it fostered such talents as Ian & Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Kensington Market, Murray McLauchlan and Bruce Cockburn. Although currently out of print, it is essential reading. Nicholas has put together a wonderful jigsaw, which illustrates how each of the artists fitted into the scene. The text is also supplemented by a wealth of great photographs, album sleeves, posters, flyers etc. My favourite is the photo of Bernie Finkelstein outside El Patio with Kensington Market, the band he launched with the payout from Albert Grossman for The Paupers.
